Prenatal Exposure to Air Pollution and Risk for Attention-Deficit/hyperactivity Disorder in Children.

Exposure to air pollutants during early life may impair children's neurodevelopment and increase the risk of ADHD. The study aimed to explore the association between exposure to prenatal air pollutants and ADHD in the school population from Tarragona, Spain. Data were obtained from the EPINED study, a two-phase epidemiological research involving preschool-aged (4-5 years) and school-age (10-11 years) children. The screening phase assessed ADHD symptoms in 3,727 participants, followed by a diagnostic phase with 781 children (549 without ADHD, 174 with ADHD). Multivariable regression showed that

Prenatal exposure to air pollution and the development of autism spectrum disorder from birth to adolescence: A nationwide Danish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but evidence from low-exposure settings such as Denmark remains limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the association between prenatal exposure to particulate matter with a diameter of ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ASD in children, and to identify the most susceptible groups. METHODS: We included 850,361 children born in Denmark between 1990 and 2004 and followed them for ASD diagnoses in the Danish Patient Register until age 15 years. We assigned p

Environmental determinants of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health: interactive roles of air pollution, heat waves, and green spaces.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, characterised by linked metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular dysfunctions, confers high cardiovascular risk and represents a major public health concern in China. Environmental exposures such as air pollution, heat waves, and limited greenness may exacerbate cardiometabolic burden. Limited studies evaluated their independent and interactive effects on CVD risk among individuals with CKM syndrome. METHODS: We assessed city-level annual environmental exposures using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2018

Long-term exposure to air pollution and 5-year mortality after lung cancer diagnosis: a Danish nurse cohort study.

While the association between air pollution and lung cancer is well established, its relationship with post-diagnosis mortality remains limited, especially in low-exposure settings. We investigated the association of long-term exposure to air pollution with 5-year mortality after lung cancer diagnosis in Denmark. In this nested cohort, we included 449 participants from the Danish Nurse Cohort who were diagnosed with lung cancer between their baseline year (1993/1999) and 2020. We estimated mean residential annual concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), el

Air Pollution and Particulate Matter: Implications in Upper Airway Disease.

Air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human health. There is growing evidence that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of upper airway inflammatory disease including allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis. Recent improvement in air pollution measurement, including wearable pollution monitors, may improve our understanding of patient exposures. In this piece, we summarize salient literature and interventions.

Long-Term Exposure to Air Pollution and Incidence of Parkinson's Disease: A Danish Nationwide Administrative Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) incidence, yet evidence is mixed, partly because of challenges with PD diagnosis and definition. We examined this association in a nationwide administrative cohort. METHODS: We followed 3,280,190 Danish residents ≥30 years old from January 1, 2000 until December 31, 2018 for PD incidence, defined as either first hospital contact for primary PD or redeemed prescription of PD medication, as recorded in the Danish National Patient Registry or Prescription Registry, respectively. We assigned annual mean ai

Impacts of air pollution on farmers' subjective satisfaction in China's ore and agricultural zone.

Understanding the relationship between air pollution and farmers' subjective satisfaction in ore-agriculture zone is crucial for rural revitalization and improving farmers' well-being in China. However, existing research lacks multi-perspective and multi-time-frame analyses of this relationship. This study develops a three-dimensional satisfaction framework encompassing life, environmental, and government dimensions and adopts a multi-temporal approach covering short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. Using data from air pollution measurements and questionnaire surveys (n = 600) focusing on fa

Identifying Shared Diagnostic Genes and Underlying Mechanisms Between Skin Exposure to Air Pollution and Skin Barrier Damage: A Bioinformatics Approach.

Air pollution poses a significant threat to skin health, contributing to inflammation, aging, and disruption of the epidermal barrier. This study aims to identify genes associated with skin exposure to air pollution and skin barrier damage, and to discover potential biomarkers for these effects. Datasets related to air pollution-exposed skin (PS) and skin barrier damage (SD) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were initially performed on both datasets. Through functional enrichment analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network co

Effects of combined prenatal exposure to air pollution and maternal stress on social behavior and oxytocin and vasopressin systems in male and female mice.

Prenatal exposures to air pollution and maternal psychosocial stress are each associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and epidemiological work suggests that concurrent exposure to these risk factors may be particularly harmful. This is important given that the same populations often bear the brunt of both toxicant and psychosocial stress burdens. Social impairments are a defining symptom in ASD. Previous work modeling combined prenatal exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) and maternal stress (MS) in rodents has found male

Premature mortality and years of life lost attributable to ambient air pollution in Israel, compared to Europe: analysis and implications.

Exposure to air pollution is considered the most significant environmental risk factor to human health. Updates in epidemiological studies in recent years provided the scientific evidence for the World Health Organization (WHO)’s air quality guidelines in 2021, allowing an update to the quantitative calculation of premature death (PD) from air pollution. This study examines the impact of air pollution on public health in Israel, focusing on PD and years of life lost (YLL) associated with exposure to PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) and compares them to findings from 41 European co

Mapping Slow Mobility Users' Unhealthy Exposure to Air Pollution in London.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Slow mobility, characterized by modes of transportation such as walking and cycling, is often promoted for its health benefits and environmental friendliness. However, users of slow mobility face prolonged and direct exposure to their immediate environment, potentially increasing their susceptibility to air pollution compared to those using faster transportation modes. This study aims to quantify and spatially analyze the air pollution exposure associated with slow mobility in urban areas, using London as a case study, to inform healthier and more sustainable planning prac

From cradle to cortex: An exposome- and equity-centered perspective of neurocognitive aging and dementia risk in the era of climate change.

The convergence of climate change, adverse environmental exposures, and rapid population aging necessitates an equity-based paradigm shift in safeguarding brain health across the life course. Older adults, especially those in marginalized and low-resource settings, face disproportionate exposure to air pollution, toxicants, and climate-related hazards. Emerging evidence links these biophysical, social, and cultural vulnerabilities to cognitive decline and a heightened risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs), underscoring the need to examine cumulative exposures acr

Ethnic inequalities in ischemic stroke occurrence are partly mediated by air pollution: a Dutch nationwide follow-up analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic disparities in ischemic stroke are substantial and differences in exposure to air pollution have been demonstrated as well. However, the role of air pollution in mediating ethnic disparities in risk of ischemic stroke remains unclear. Understanding this relationship is crucial, as air pollution is a major modifiable risk factor for ischemic stroke. This study aims to determine whether air pollution exposure mediates ischemic stroke risk differences between Indonesian, Surinamese, Dutch Caribbean, and ethnic Dutch populations. METHODS: We carried out a nationwide cohort study

Particulate Matter-Induced Lysosomal Rupture-Mediated Pyroptosis in Human Vocal Fold Fibroblasts.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to air pollution, specifically to particulate matter (PM), is a significant global health hazard. Recent studies have shown that PM triggers NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis. However, whether cathepsin B (CTSB), a protease released from ruptured lysosomes, activates the NLRP3 inflammasome is unclear. This study investigated the involvement of CTSB and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in PM-exposed human vocal fold fibroblasts (hVFFs). METHODS: Pyroptotic cell death was evaluated based on LDH release and PI staining and NLRP3 inflammasome activation via western blotting and immunoflu

The effect of air pollution on the risk of hospitalization for H1N1 influenza based on GAM and DLNM models.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid advancement of industrialization and urbanization, air pollution is becoming increasingly serious, posing a huge threat to human health. There is ambiguity in the research on the impact of air pollutants on the severity of influenza. Therefore, exploring the link between air pollution and the risk of hospitalization for Influenza A (H1N1) is of great significance. METHODS: A 9-year time series data was collected from Luoyang from 2014 to 2022 to investigate the impact of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, O3, and CO) on the risk of hospitalization for H1N1 influe

Intestinal barrier damage is associated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced pathological aortic injury in mice.

Chronic exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, and inflammation induced by fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure is a key driver in CVD development. However, the mechanism by which PM2.5 causes cardiacovescular damage remains unclear. Here, Balb/c mice were intratracheally instilled with PM2.5 suspension at doses of 2.0 mg/kg or 4.0 mg/kg body weight for 7 consecutive days to establish an aortic injury model. Pathological changes were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), elastic Van Gieson, and Masson's trichrome staining. Potential

High-Temporal-Resolution Global Positioning System Data Are Not Necessary for Mobility-Based Assessments of Long-Term Outdoor Personal Exposures.

High temporal frequency global positioning system (GPS) data are increasingly employed in mobility-based exposure assessments, yet their advantages over lower-frequency data remain uncertain for long-term applications. Understanding how GPS sampling rates affect exposure estimates is crucial for identifying the temporal scale at which human daily mobility affects exposure assessments and for informing practical strategies for GPS data collection. This study evaluated the influence of sampling rates on long-term personal exposure to air pollution, noise, green space, and fast food environments.

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and suicide risk: A national cohort in the Netherlands.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked to an increased immediate risk of suicide. However, the relationship between long-term exposure to air pollution and suicide risk remains largely unknown. We assessed 1) the associations between long-term exposure to multiple air pollutants and suicide risk and 2) whether certain population groups are more vulnerable. We constructed a cohort of adults in the Netherlands with a follow-up from 2013 to 2018. Annual exposures to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) were assessed based on adults' residential history
