Ambient air pollution at home, work and school: Evidence from Ireland.

Most of the existing literature linking air pollution with health outcomes uses data on ambient (i.e., outdoor) air pollution concentrations at or near individuals' residences to proxy personal exposure to air pollution. However, an individual's exposure is influenced by a complex set of factors including the different activities that individuals undertake, by indoor air pollution in the various locations where individuals spend their time, and by the degree of penetration of ambient air pollution into these locations. Apart from their residential address, evidence from time use diaries shows

Associations between multiple air pollutants and insulin resistance in Chinese adults: the moderating role of physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution may worsen insulin resistance (IR), which is a central contributor to diabetes and other metabolic disorders. However, the effects of multi-pollutant mixtures remain unclear. We investigated the associations between exposure to multiple air pollutants and two IR indices—the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) and the Metabolic Syndrome Insulin Resistance (METS-IR) Index—in Chinese adults. METHODS: Using data from 4,144 adults in the CHARLS database with two observations (baseline in 2011 and follow-up in 2015), we employed generalized linear mixed mode

Indoor and outdoor fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide concentrations in homes of infants in Nairobi, Kenya.

Early life exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse health outcomes in children however few studies have investigated children's air pollution exposures in urban settings in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We measured fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) in homes of infants in Nairobi, Kenya and conducted exploratory analysis of exposure factors. Questionnaires captured household characteristics and self-reported air pollution exposures. Indoor and outdoor 24-hour (24 h) concentrations were measured inside and 1 m outside the house. PM2.5 was sampled using standard gr

Associations of air pollution, road traffic noise, and greenness with adiposity markers in Swedish young adults.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures have been associated with adiposity, but the evidence remains inconsistent. We examined associations of several environmental exposures with adiposity in young adulthood, and body mass index (BMI) trajectories from birth to 24 years. METHODS: In the Swedish birth cohort BAMSE, individual-level exposure to air pollutants, road traffic noise, and greenness was estimated using validated models. Time-weighted averages were calculated for early-life (first year) and recent exposure (five years prior to clinical assessment). At age 24, waist circumference and bod

Environmental exposures, microbiome dynamics and chronic disease risk in climate-vulnerable regions: interdisciplinary perspectives from Puerto Rico.

Environmental factors such as air pollution, weather events, and ambient toxins are major contributors to human disease, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations. In Puerto Rico, chronic exposure to air pollution and ecological disruption poses significant public health risks, particularly for cancer and other chronic conditions. These risks are unevenly distributed, disproportionately affecting children and older adults, groups central to community resilience yet highly susceptible to pollution-related health effects. This perspective review synthesizes emerging evidence linkin

Maternal PM2.5 exposure induces insulin resistance in adult male mouse offspring via gut-liver axis.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of metabolic diseases represents a global health challenge, with metabolically unhealthy normal-weight (MUHNW) individuals remaining largely overlooked. In addition to direct fine particulate matter (PM2.5) inhalation, there is growing recognition that maternal PM2.5 exposure may be a contributing environmental factor for metabolic disorders. However, the mechanisms by which maternal PM2.5 exposure induced metabolic disorders in the offspring remain unknown. METHODS: Eight-week-old pregnant C57BL/6N mice were exposed to either filtered air (FA) or ambient PM2

Do diabetes and hypertension mediate the association of air pollution with the incidence of end-stage kidney disease? Results from two large European cohorts.

Air pollution has been associated with kidney disease. However, it is unknown to what extent diabetes and hypertension, themselves affected by air pollution, contribute to the association. We investigated whether the association between air pollution and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is mediated by diabetes or hypertension in two large cohorts, the Austrian VHM&PP and the Italian RoLS. Both cohorts were followed up for incident ESKD with dialysis and kidney transplant registries. Exposure to air pollution was assessed using annual mean concentrations at the residential address derived from E

The effect of in utero exposure to air pollution and subsequent cognitive and behavioral development in children aged 1-3 years old.

This study investigated the effect of in utero exposure to pollution (PM2.5 and NO2), on trajectories of cognitive-behavioral development between ages 1.5 and 3 years. The prenatal period represents a critical window for child development, during which the brain is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution. Yet few studies have examined the associations between prenatal air pollution exposure and developmental functioning in early childhood. Data was analyzed from the Stress in Pregnancy (SIP) study, a longitudinal cohort study (n = 210). Neurodevelopmental outcomes were

Ultrafine particles and stroke hospitalizations: New insights of exposure-outcome threshold, daily peaks, and comorbidities.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and morbidity worldwide. Prior research has found that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of stroke, but few studies have focused on the ultrafine particles (UFPs)-stroke relationship. We investigated the association between UFPs and stroke hospitalizations and disparities by stroke subtypes, demographics, and seasonality. In this time-stratified case-crossover study, stroke hospitalizations (mainly ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke) were identified using principal diagnosis from New York State hospital discharge data. UFPs and covariates, incl

Matched case-control study of air pollution and infant mortality in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality is an indicator of overall population health but has been evaluated in relatively few studies of air pollution. We estimated associations between postnatal exposure to air pollution and postneonatal infant mortality in a North Carolina birth cohort. METHODS: We identified cases of infant mortality with dates of birth between 2003 and 2015. For each case, we randomly selected 10 controls from at-risk infants without replacement, matched on year of birth and geographic region. Air pollutant concentrations - fine particulate matter (PM2.5); 5 PM2.5 components; nitrog

Air Pollution and the Progression of Physical Function Limitations and Disability in Aging Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Physical disability reflects the cumulative burden of chronic conditions. Although generally progressive, episodes of disability can be followed by periods of recovery; therefore, there is a need to identify modifiable risk factors that contribute to the dynamic development of disability. OBJECTIVE: To investigate air pollution as a modifiable risk factor of transitions between states of no physical function limitation, physical function limitations, and activities of daily living (ADL) disability. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included respondents older th

Associations between residential segregation, ambient air pollution, and hippocampal features in recent trauma survivors.

Residential segregation is associated with differential exposure to air pollution. Hippocampus structure and function are highly susceptible to pollutants and associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development. Therefore, we investigated associations between residential segregation, air pollutants, hippocampal neurobiology, and PTSD in recent trauma survivors. Participants (N = 278; 34% non-Hispanic white, 46% Non-Hispanic Black, 16% Hispanic) completed multimodal neuroimaging two weeks after trauma. Yearly averages of air pollutants (PM2.5 and NO2) and racial/economic segregatio

Source-Specific Air Pollution and Risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Pooled Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The evidence linking long-term exposure to air pollution and the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is still controversial. Furthermore, most studies have investigated associations with particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), disregarding their emission source and other relevant air pollutants, such as ultrafine particles (UFP) and elemental carbon (EC). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess associations between long-term residential exposure to PM2.5, NO2, UFP, and EC and the risk of COPD, distinguishing the effects of air pollution from loca

Seasonal viruses modify short-term air pollution effects on pediatric wheeze and asthma: a time-series study.

BACKGROUND: Short-term exposure to air pollution is a known trigger for pediatric wheeze-associated disorders (WAD), such as acute asthma and virus-induced wheezing, yet few air pollution studies account for concurrent viral circulation, which may confound or modify the observed associations. This study aims to assess whether viral circulation confounds or modifies the association between daily levels of air pollution and pediatric WAD emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: We conducted a time-series analysis of 12,603 WAD ED visits among children 2-18 years old across eight hospitals in

Exposure measurement error in air-pollution epidemiology and its determinants: results from the MELONS study.

INTRODUCTION: In air-pollution epidemiology, measured or modelled surrogate exposure estimates, prone to measurement error (ME), are used to investigate the health effects of exposure to pollution of outdoor origin, potentially leading to biased effect estimates. We predicted the annual personal exposure from outdoor sources by using personal measurements, compared it with concentrations from surrogate metrics, and quantified the ME magnitude, type, and determinants. METHODS: We used measurements from four panel studies in London, UK, and predicted personal exposures to fine particulate matte
