The biologic response following the insertion of dental implants is a widely studied process. Recent research has highlighted the importance of implant surface topography and chemistry as highly influential factors in consolidating the dental implant with the surrounding biological environment. The hydrophilicity, or wettability, of dental implants plays a pivotal role in these interactions and successful osseointegration. A more well-established factor that can also influence the development of the tissue-implant interface is exposure to tobacco smoke. While the negative impact of smoking on

Disorders in glucose metabolism are well-established features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and are linked to its clinical severity and phenotypic variability. This study aimed to assess serum concentrations of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) and to examine their relationships with glucose and insulin levels, selected sex hormone concentrations, body weight, and exposure to tobacco smoke. Women with PCOS exhibited significantly elevated levels of fasting glucose, insulin, GIP, and GLP-1 compared to co

BACKGROUND: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), also known as passive smoke, is a major public health concern due to its adverse health effects, which are comparable to those of active smoking. Although the risks of ETS for cardiovascular and respiratory outcomes are well documented, less is known about its impact on cancer prognosis. This study evaluated the association between ETS exposure and five-year all-cause mortality among patients diagnosed with breast, colorectal, lung, melanoma, or stomach cancer.
METHODS: Clinical data were obtained from the UC San Diego Health system and the UC He

Smoking during pregnancy is known to adversely affect offspring health; however, the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of depression and anxiety in offspring remains inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify this relationship. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and OVID databases for articles published between 2000 and 2024. The odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the association. A total of 11 studies involving 1,775,220 participants met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that

This study evaluated the effects of exposure to tobacco smoke on the kidneys of household dogs using B-mode ultrasonography and Shear-wave Elastography (SWE). Fifteen adult dogs were analyzed and divided into two groups: one exposed to passive smoking for at least two years (n=7) and another non-exposed group (n=8), both without a history of kidney disease. The animals underwent clinical evaluation and laboratory tests, followed by B-mode ultrasonography and renal elastography. Blood test were normal for all individuals. Ultrasonography demonstrated a significant increase in renal echogenicity

Tobacco smoke can relax colonic smooth muscles and increase intestinal permeability, but whether early-life exposure affects later-life irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its underlying pathway remain unknown. We obtained the data from a large-scale cohort study in UK biobank, including information on age of smoking initiation (in utero period, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood), levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), genetic risk score (GRS), and IBS onset. We employed Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between tobacco smoke exposure at different stages of life and in

Memory function is critically essential across all life stages, yet it is increasingly compromised by exposure to airborne pollutants due to human behaviours. This review examines the adverse impacts of tobacco smoke and e-cigarette vapour on memory function, emphasising the risks to younger populations. Both pollutants are potent oxidants that induce oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in the brain, leading to synaptic injury and neuronal apoptosis. These processes compromise neuronal integrity and function, potentially resulting in early-onset dementia. Additionally, third-hand expos

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that exposure to tobacco smoke is associated to a number of chronic diseases, but the evidence for an association with osteoarthritis (OA) is sparse and inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate whether exposure to tobacco smoke for an adult is associated with developing OA at a young age, and to assess dose-response patterns.
METHODS: We conducted a pooled, cross-sectional analysis of secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2020 among US adults aged 20-54 years (n=26145). Tobacco smoke exposure was qu

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are increasingly being defined not only in terms of metabolic or purely vascular disorders, but also as complex immunometabolic disorders. One of the most groundbreaking discoveries in recent years is the role of neutrophil extracellular networks (NETs/NENs) as a key link between chronic vascular wall inflammation and thrombotic processes. In this article, we present a synthetic overview of the latest data on the biology of NETs/NENs and their impact on the development of atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, and the mechanisms of immunothrombosis. We highlig

BACKGROUND: Early-life growth adversity is important to later-life health, but precision assessment in adulthood is challenging. We evaluated whether the difference between attained and genotype-predicted adult height ("height-GaP") would associate with prospectively ascertained early-life growth adversity and later-life all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
METHODS: Data were first analyzed from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC; n = 4582; 56/43% female/male) and UKBiobank (n = 483,385; 54/46% female/male). Genotype-predicted height was calculated using a multi-an

Background: Exposure to tobacco smoke, from conventional tobacco cigarettes (CTC) or heated tobacco products (HTPs), increases oxidative stress, causing endothelial dysfunction and higher cardiovascular risk. It is unclear whether smoke exposure also promotes low-grade endotoxemia, potentially activating NADPH oxidase and further impairing endothelial function. This study assessed serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in children and adults actively or passively exposed to conventional cigarette smoke or HTPs, compared with non-exposed controls. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study co

White-matter development during fetal life represents one of the most vulnerable processes to environmental disruption, as it relies on the precisely timed proliferation, migration, and differentiation of oligodendrocyte lineage cells. Among environmental threats, exposure to toxic compounds contained in tobacco smoke and vaping aerosols represents a major yet preventable risk during pregnancy. Despite growing awareness, tobacco smoking remains widespread, and a substantial proportion of the population-including pregnant women-continues to perceive electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) a

Background: Vitamin D (VD) plays a central role in calcium homeostasis during pregnancy and has been implicated in redox-related biological processes. While VD deficiency (VDD) has been consistently associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, the relationships between VD insufficiency (VDI), maternal antioxidant-related biomarkers, and neonatal outcomes remain incompletely characterized, particularly during the third trimester. Objective: To determines the prevalence of VDI in third-trimester pregnant women and to examine its associations with antioxidant-related markers and selected neonatal

Tobacco control is a public health priority. However, Korea has recently experienced a reversal in its long-term decline in smoking prevalence. To address this trend, it is essential to broaden advocacy networks by engaging new stakeholders. We propose that firefighters represent a strategic yet under-represented partner in tobacco control because their professional interests closely align with tobacco-related policy goals. First, cigarette butts have consistently been the leading cause of fire incidents, and tobacco use directly undermines firefighters' core mission to protect life and public

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to tobacco smoke is a major risk factor for poor asthma control. We aimed to assess the response to asthma treatment based on patients' smoking status.
METHODS: This post hoc analysis used data from a large prospective asthma cohort treated with inhaled extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol. Patients were retrospectively categorized as current smokers, former smokers, or nonsmokers. Asthma control and symptom severity were evaluated over 6 months using Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) criteria. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients who achieved an improved GI

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of cancer among children. Tobacco exposure during gestation has been investigated as a potential risk factor, but its role remains undefined. Given tobacco's toxicologic profile as a DNA-damaging agent, we examined the impact of DNA repair gene variability as a source of vulnerability to tobacco exposure risk for ALL.
METHODS: Leveraging demographic and genotype data from two large California-based ALL epidemiology studies, we used logistic regression, MinimumP (minP) statistical method, and permutation tests to examine in

BACKGROUND: Early-life exposure to tobacco smoke has been associated with various adverse health outcomes and is considered as a critical public health concern now. However, its impact on frailty risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between early-life exposure to tobacco smoke and frailty in adulthood, and to assess whether this association is independent of cumulative smoking exposure and mediated by systemic inflammation and telomere length.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from the UK Biobank. Early-life exposure to tobacco smoke was assessed using two

INTRODUCTION: Significant progress has been made in reducing maternal exposure to tobacco smoke and subsequent adverse birth outcomes, however, reductions may require strategies that reduce the availability of tobacco retailers. In this study, we investigated the relationship between tobacco retailer density and birth outcomes across the USA and predicted the potential impact of a tobacco retailer density cap on these outcomes.
METHODS: Annual US county (n=3105), rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, small-for-gestational age, all-cause infant mortality and sudden infant death syndrome (S

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke is strongly associated with the development of orofacial clefts. Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) has many of the same toxic combustion byproducts as burning tobacco, such as benzene and PM2.5, and may therefore act through similar pathways to cause harm to developing fetuses. Since concentrations of TRAP are highest close to the roadway, they can be assessed using distance-weighted traffic density (DWTD).
METHODS: A case-control study of birthing parent-newborn pairs was conducted among children born between January 1, 2000, and December 31,
