Chemical Components in the Breast Milk of Passive Smoker Women: A Systematic Review and Health Risks Assessment.

Breast milk from passive smokers may contain various harmful chemical components, primarily due to exposure to tobacco smoke. This systematic review was conducted on the chemical components of breast milk in women who were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). English language-published papers were advanced searched without time limitation until April, 2024 in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. A total of 1156 papers were recorded in the initial search of these databases. Finally, 18 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included. Our results showed that metals (n = 1

Air pollution and hospitalization risk in infants with bronchiolitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Bronchiolitis is one of the leading causes of hospitalization among infants. Established risk factors include young age, prematurity, and exposure to tobacco smoke. Emerging evidence suggests that air pollution may also contribute to the burden of respiratory diseases. However, its link with bronchiolitis hospitalizations remains debated. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether exposure to air pollutants is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for bronchiolitis in infants. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted followi

Late-onset Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy and antiandrogens for prostate cancer: is there a causative link?

INTRODUCTION: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited condition due to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations usually affecting young men within their thirties, while women seem protected by estrogens with a female-to-male ratio of 1:3. Late-onset cases (over 40 years of age) are usually associated to toxic exposure to tobacco smoke or drugs causing mitochondrial dysfunction. RESULTS: We describe two cases of LHON remarkable for their late onset (> 60 years) in the absence of classic toxic factors. They were both affected by advanced prostate cancer and developed LHO

Specific airway resistance according to early maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy in children aged 5 to 6 years old from the FEPED cohort (RESPIFEPED).

UNLABELLED: There are conflicting results on the association between maternal vitamin D concentrations during pregnancy and respiratory outcomes for their offspring. However, published studies have mainly focused on the second and third trimesters of pregnancy or on high-risk population. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between vitamin D plasma concentrations in the first trimester (T1) of pregnancy and effective specific airway resistance (sReff) for children aged 5 to 6. Secondary objectives were to evaluate this association in the third trimester (T3) and in

Exposure to secondhand smoke from cigarettes and secondhand aerosol from tobacco and nicotine products in indoor and outdoor public spaces in the European Union: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In December 2024, the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted a recommendation to expand regulations on the use of nicotine-containing products both in indoor settings and specific outdoor areas. This study aimed to examine sociodemographic factors associated with exposure to conventional tobacco smoke and aerosols across the EU and support for relevant regulations. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the Special Eurobarometer 99.3 (n=26 358, May-June 2023) across 27 EU Member States (MS). We estimated the weighted prevalence of secondhand

Potentially toxic metals in umbilical cord blood as a biomarker for passive smoker women.

Maternal environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure during pregnancy may threat the health of mothers and their newborns. The present study was performed to determine the potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in umbilical cord blood as a biomarker for passive smoker women, as well as their association with neonatal birth indicators. In total 128 mothers (exposed: 64 and non-exposed: 64) were selected as participants. A volume of 2 mL umbilical cord blood was sampled from each participant, and PTMs including As, Pb, Cr, Al, Co, Cd, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Se and Ni levels were analyzed by ICP-MS. The mean co

Changing life expectancy in European countries 1990-2021: a subanalysis of causes and risk factors from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16

DNA methylation-based clocks, tobacco smoking, and lung cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: Biological age, estimated by DNA methylation-based (DNAm) clocks, has been reported to be associated with lung cancer risk. However, the extent to which tobacco smoking behaviours can explain this association and the extent to which DNAm clocks and their components can inform risk assessment for lung cancer remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between DNAm clocks, smoking, and lung cancer risk. METHODS: We analyzed four prospective cohorts (MCCS, Australia, 324 cases/324 controls; NSHDS, Sweden, 190 cases/190 controls; EPIC, Italy, 160 cases/107

Early-life exposure to tobacco smoke and chronic liver disease incidence in adulthood.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Tobacco exposure during critical developmental windows may have lasting health effects, but its role in the development of chronic liver disease (CLD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between early-life tobacco exposure and CLD incidence in adulthood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 429,603 participants without prior liver diseases from the UK Biobank. Information on in utero tobacco exposure and the age of smoking initiation was extracted, categorized as never-smokers, adulthood (≥18 y), adolescence (15-17 y), and childhood (5-14 y)

Environmental pollution, particulates and pulmonary TB: An unseen connection.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and treatable infectious disease, yet its eradication remains a global challenge, particularly in the realm of prevention. Identifying and addressing new avenues for intervention is crucial to achieving the global target of TB elimination. Air pollution, like TB, affects millions worldwide and is a significant contributor of respiratory illnesses. Numerous studies worldwide have suggested that indoor and outdoor air pollution may elevate the risk of tuberculosis. Major pollutants included PM2.5, O3, PM10 and NOx. Their exposures for long periods of time have

Policy-relevant differences between secondhand and thirdhand smoke: strengthening protections from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke pollutants.

Starting in the 1970s, individuals, businesses and the public have increasingly benefited from policies prohibiting smoking indoors, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Smokefree policies to protect against secondhand smoke exposure, however, do not fully protect the public from the persistent and toxic chemical residues from tobacco smoke (also known as thirdhand smoke) that linger in indoor environments for years after smoking stops. Nor do these policies address the economic costs that individuals, businesses and the public bear in their attempts to

Asthma and COPD: A Focus on β-Agonists - Past, Present and Future.

Asthma has been recognised as a respiratory disorder for millennia and the focus of targeted drug development for the last 120 years. Asthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases worldwide. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is caused by exposure to tobacco smoke and other noxious particles and exerts a substantial economic and social burden. This chapter reviews the development of the treatments of asthma and COPD particularly focussing on the β-agonists, from the isolation of adrenaline, through the develo

Involuntary tobacco smoke exposures from conception to 18 years increase midlife cardiometabolic disease risk: a 40-year longitudinal study.

Few population studies have sufficient follow-up period to examine early-life exposures with later life diseases. A critical question is whether involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke from conception to adulthood increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) in midlife. In the Collaborative Perinatal Project, serum-validated maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSP) was assessed in the 1960s. At a mean age of 39 years, 1623 offspring were followed-up for the age at first physician-diagnoses of any CMDs, including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. Disparities across the continuum of lung cancer care: a review of recent literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Health disparities have long been noted in lung cancer incidence and survival and persist across the continuum of care. Understanding the gaps in care that arise from disparities in lung cancer risk, screening, treatment, and survivorship are essential to guiding efforts to achieve equitable care. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature continues to show that Black people, women, and people who experience socioeconomic disadvantage or live in rural areas experience disparities throughout the spectrum of lung ca

The association between anti-smoking legislation and prevalence of acute respiratory illnesses in Indian children.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to tobacco smoke causes numerous health problems in children, and create burden on the population in terms of economy, morbidity and mortality. In order to protect the child from exposure to tobacco smoke in the outdoor environment, sufficient legislative enactments are available in Indian legislation. The objective of the present study is to investigate the fact that in absence of any specific laws stating about protection of children from exposure to tobacco smoke in indoor environment, whether outdoor related legislations are sufficient to protect children from exposurea

Ultrastructural changes of lung tissue under conditions of experimental obesity and smoking.

Obesity can cause respiratory disorders inflicted by adipose tissue accumulation and the numerous cytokines adipocytes produce. Smoking is, first of all, associated with a wide range of lung diseases characterized by diffuse changes in the lung tissue and a decrease in the respiratory volume of the lungs. The study aimed to investigate the ultrastructural changes in the lungs of sexually mature male rats under conditions of experimental obesity and smoking. The total sample of experimental animals consisted of 120 rats, divided into four groups: the control group (n=30) - conditionally healthy

Social determinants of respiratory health from birth: still of concern in the 21st century?

Respiratory symptoms are ubiquitous in children and, even though they may be the harbinger of poor long-term outcomes, are often trivialised. Adverse exposures pre-conception, antenatally and in early childhood have lifetime impacts on respiratory health. For the most part, lung function tracks from the pre-school years at least into late middle age, and airflow obstruction is associated not merely with poor respiratory outcomes but also early all-cause morbidity and mortality. Much would be preventable if social determinants of adverse outcomes were to be addressed. This review presents the p
