The effect of parental smoking on the well-being of infants and children is an important public health concern. It is necessary, however, to validate the existence of such exposure objectively before an evaluation of the effects of parental smoking behavior on the child's health can be made. We measured the concentration of nicotine and its major metabolite, cotinine, in the saliva and urine of 32 infants with household exposure to tobacco smoke, and 19 unexposed infants. The concentrations were significantly higher in the exposed group than in the unexposed group, with the best indicator of c

Polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) isolated from the defibrinated blood of 44 healthy volunteers (20 no smoking subjects and 22 smokers) were examined for the presence of tobacco antigens using specific rabbit antiserum conjugated with FITC. In 11 persons from the smokers group PMNL were examined by the direct immunofluorescence technique, using appropriate antisera, as well as for the presence of IgG, IgM and C3. It was stated that the number of PMNL with fluorescent tobacco antigens rose significantly after exposure to tobacco smoke. The above cells were detected both in non-smokers and smo

Ten breast-fed infants, each paired with a formula-fed infant, were evaluated prospectively from birth to the age of 112 days to identify respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses and microorganisms associated with respiratory tract infections. The infants were matched by age and sex. More GI illnesses occurred among the formula-fed infants. Although the breast-fed infants had less exposure to tobacco smoke in the home and less exposure to other children in day-care settings, there was no suggestion of a decrease in the frequency of respiratory illness during the first four months.

To evaluate the actual level of exposure of nonsmokers to tobacco smoke in their living environments, a convenient personal monitor of nicotine specific for tobacco smoke has been developed. The nicotine personal monitor consists of a sampler tube containing 450 mg of Uniport-S coated with silicon OV-17 and a portable sampling pump with a mechanical counter for obtaining total sampling volume. Using the personal monitor attached to a nonsmoker, ambient nicotine was collected in the sampler tube by drawing environmental air at a constant flow rate for a maximum period of 8 hr. The collected nic

Tobacco smoke, which contains over 50 known carcinogens and many other toxic agents, is a health hazard for nonsmokers who are regularly exposed to it while at work. Involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke annoys and irritates many healthy nonsmokers. Serious acute health effects are probably limited to the one fifth of the population with pre-existing health conditions that are aggravated by exposure to tobacco smoke. The consequences of long-term exposure include decreased lung function and lung cancer. Existing air quality standards for workplaces do not directly specify an acceptable level f

Exposure to tobacco smoke is measured by a variety of invasive and noninvasive techniques. Our purpose was to examine how well some of these measures correlated when obtained simultaneously from the same subjects. On three occasions, six subjects were studied while they were smoking a single cigarette after 24 hr of abstinence. There were positive correlations between increases in heart rate and plasma nicotine concentrations and between percentage carboxyhemoglobin and exhaled carbon monoxide. Although residual cotinine was readily detected in samples of plasma before the subjects smoked, the

One hundred non-smoking patients attending hospital outpatient clinics reported their degree of passive exposure to tobacco smoke over the preceding three days and provided samples of blood, expired air, saliva, and urine. Although the absolute levels were low, the concentration of cotinine in all body compartments surveyed was systematically related to self reported exposure. Salivary nicotine concentration also showed a linear increase with degree of reported exposure, although this measure was sensitive only to exposure on the day of testing. Measures of carbon monoxide, thiocyanate, and pl

Some epidemiological studies indicate an association between passive smoking and an increased risk for cancer, especially for cancer of the lung. Other reports, however, have failed to confirm these findings. Biochemical analyses of the physiological fluids for markers of exposure to tobacco smoke are needed as measurements of the uptake of smoke components by nonsmokers and for the estimation of relative cancer risk to passively exposed persons compared with that to active cigarette smokers. This communication reports the uptake of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and nicotine after passive

The effect of chronic inhalation of cigarette smoke on hepatic uptake of high density lipoproteins (HDL) in White Carneau pigeons was examined. Four treatment groups included: 1) Shelf Control birds fed a chow diet and retained in their cages; 2) Sham pigeons fed a cholesterol-saturated fat diet and exposed to fresh air by a smoking machine; 3) Low nicotine-low carbon monoxide (LoLo) animals also fed the cholesterol diet and exposed to low concentrations of these cigarette smoke products; and 4) High nicotine-high carbon monoxide (HiHi) birds fed the cholesterol diet and subjected to high conc

An update of histopathologic classification schemes is provided for carcinoma of the lung and factors that influence proportional distributions of cell types, i.e., sources and preparations of tissue specimens, observer variability, and use of secondary sources of information. Consideration is given to the natural history and to current knowledge of the demographic characteristics of cell types of carcinoma of the lung. A review of studies reporting histopathologic associations with environmental exposures suggests that no single type of carcinoma of the lung is specifically associated with ex

The examinations were carried out in 336 tobacco smokers, 91 persons who gave up smoking, 175 persons exposed to tobacco smoke indirectly and 112 persons who had nothing to do with tobacco smoke. Together 714 persons were examined. The examinations, which were carried out on the grounds of the clinic observations and the data obtained from interviews, aimed at the discovering of the causal nexus between the attacks of atopic bronchial asthma as well as the occurrence of acute urticaria and the exposure to tobacco smoke. All the patients underwent the dermic allergometric test with the extract

Nicotine concentrations were measured in saliva and urine samples collected from 82 smokers and 56 non-smokers after a morning at work. Each subject answered a series of questions related to their recent intentional or passive exposure to tobacco smoke. All non-smokers had measurable amounts of nicotine in both saliva and urine. Those non-smokers who reported recent exposure to tobacco smoke had significantly higher nicotine concentrations (p less than 0.001) than those who had not been exposed; their concentrations overlapped those of smokers who had smoked up to three cigarettes before sampl

The respiratory health of a large group of Arizona school children who have been exposed to indoor pollutants--tobacco smoke and home cooking fumes--is reported. A significant relationship was found between parental smoking and symptoms of cough, wheeze, and sputum production. Also, children in homes where gas cooking fuel was used had higher rates of cough than children in homes where electricity was used. No differences in pulmonary function or yearly lung growth rates occurred among subjects grouped by exposure to tobacco smoke or cooking fuel. Thus, parental smoking and home cooking fuel a

A single carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) estimation of late evening blood sample among non-smokers, cigarette smokers, and sheesha smokers was evaluated among Saudis. The COHb level in smokers of 15 to 40 cigarettes a day ranged between 0.7 and 10.3 with a mean value of 6.1 +/- 2.58 COHb. Values among sheesha smokers ranged between 6.5 and 13.9 with a mean value of 8.8 +/- 1.83, significantly higher than those of cigarette smokers (P less than 0.001) for a given degree of exposure to tobacco smoke.

Induction of lung aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity has been studied in rats following their exposure to different regimes of cigarette smoke produced from tobacco and the tobacco substitute NSM. The rate of induction of AHH was maximal during the first 3 days of exposure to tobacco smoke. The frequency of exposure to tobacco smoke was apparently more important in influencing induction of AHH than was the duration of the exposure. After cessation of exposure to smoke, AHH activity declined to control levels within about 3 days. Tobacco smoke was a more potent inducer of AHH than was

The ultrastructural appearance of rat tracheal submucosal glands after exposure to tobacco smoke for up to two years is described. Within the mucous cells many of the rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae were grossly dilated with an accumulation of amorphous, electron-lucent material. The Golgi zones were prominent, and the secretion granules often contained dense cores, and appeared to have coalesced. Histochemically, increased amounts of sulphated mucus were present in exposed rats. Serous, ciliated, and myoepithelial cells were unaffected by smoke exposure.

Mitotic activity of extra- and intra-pulmonary airway epithelium has been studied in male rats exposed to tobacco smoke for 1, 2, 3, 7 or 14 days, with and without addition of the anti-inflammatory agent phenylmethyloxadiazole (PMO) to the tobacco. In both control and exposed animals the mitotic index is greater in extrapulmonary regions than intrapulmonary ones. A single exposure to tobacco smoke significantly increases mitotic activity in both airway regions. This initial level of mitotic response is not maintained but is rapidly restored by 1 day free from tobacco exposure: the second peak

We evaluated the effect of long-term passive smoking (involuntary inhalation of tobacco smoke by nonsmokers) and long-term voluntary smoking on specific indexes of pulmonary function in 2100 middle-aged subjects. Regardless of sex, nonsmokers chronically exposed to tobacco smoke had a lower forced mid-expiratory flow rate (FEF 25 to 75 per cent) and forced end-expiratory flow rate (FEF 75 to 85 per cent) than nonsmokers not exposed (P less than 0.005). In addition, values in passive smokers were not significantly different from those in light smokers and smokers who did not inhale (P less than

After a single 1 h exposure to cigarette smoke by inhalation, the degree of damage to the epithelial layer lining the ventral wall of the rat larynx has been assessed using a semi-quantitative scoring system. The damage was characterised mainly by partial or complete loss of epithelium. The time at which a maximal response was observed depended upon the smoke concentration. Regeneration was rapid and was followed by development of hyperplasia; the regenerative phase was progressively more delayed with higher concentrations of smoke. Smoke concentrations have been compared during the regenerati
