General Approach to Initial Assessment and Documentation.

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine's (ACOEM) foundation guideline on General Approach to Initial Assessment and Documentation is intended to address the initial approach to assessment of some of the most common occupational medicine clinical problems. This approach includes a medical and occupational history, identification of body part(s) involved, effect of present illness or injury on patient's functionality, screening for disability risk factors that may affect the outcome, a detailed work history including type and duration of exposure. It is also important to

Differences in stress coping between individuals from Germany and American Samoa and their relation to obesity, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms.

Stress and how individuals cope with it can have substantial implications for health. As the socio-cultural environment influences individual perceptions of stress and coping behavior, differences between cultural groups may have different effects on physical and mental health. Using qualitative interviews and questionnaires, this study examined cultural differences in stress coping and their interplay with perceived stress (Perceived Stress Questionnaire, Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress), BMI (normal-weight, obesity), and depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory Short Form) in young

Early life environment moderates association of body composition and internalizing problems in adolescence.

Metabolic and depressive disorders are major chronic global health concerns, often co-occurring and mutually reinforcing each other. Thus, understanding risk and protective factors underlying their development is crucial for identifying effective preventive strategies. Participants included N = 10,446 participants (31,418 observations) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study aged 10-15 years. Primary outcomes were internalizing problem scores, and random slopes quantifying the within-person coupling between waist-to-height ratio and internalizing problems. Predictors included ear

Towards unified global action on ultra-processed foods: understanding commercial determinants, countering corporate power, and mobilising a public health response.

The rise of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in human diets is harming global public health. However, policy responses are still emerging-much like tobacco control efforts decades ago-indicating the need to understand root causes and accelerate global action. This paper, the third in a three-part Lancet Series, takes several steps to advance knowledge of these causes, and to inform a global public health response. First, we show that the UPF industry is a key driver of the problem, as its leading corporations and co-dependent actors have expanded and restructured food systems almost everywhere, in

Hybrid Analysis of Videoconference Technology Use by Aging-in-Place Organizations to Promote Social Engagement for Older Adults: A Scoping Review with Latent Topic Modeling.

Background/Objectives: Loneliness and social isolation are common among older adults and linked to adverse health outcomes. Videoconferencing can support social connections, but the role of aging-in-place organizations (AIPOs), such as senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging, in facilitating adoption is poorly understood. This review examined how AIPOs use relational videoconferencing to promote social engagement among older adults. Methods: We applied a hybrid methodology combining a scoping review with latent topic modeling to contextualize and analyze the evidence base. Exploratory search

Characterizing heterogeneity in emotional and behavioral problems: Latent class analysis with 507,188 children and adolescents and associations with mobile gaming addiction behavior.

BACKGROUND: While mobile gaming addiction (MGA) behavior is increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents, the role of specific emotional-behavioral profiles - particularly their latent patterns - in associating with MGA behavior remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine these associations and age-related variations. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 507,188 participants aged 6-18 years in the Children's Growth Environment, Lifestyle, and Physical and Mental Health Development Project, conducted in Guangzhou, China, in 2020. Latent class analysis was performed on parent-re

Effects of vasectomy on breeding-related movement and activity in free-ranging white-tailed deer.

BACKGROUND: An abundance of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in suburban communities can lead to problems such as increased deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs), tick-borne illnesses, and forest degradation. Deer populations can be managed using traditional lethal methods; however, these methods are often impractical, ineffective, or socially unacceptable, prompting interest in management alternatives, including fertility control. Some fertility control methods (such as vasectomy, tubal ligation, and porcine zona pellucida-based vaccines) cause unsuccessfully bred females to experience mul

Impact of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microparticles on soil physical-chemical properties, CO2 emissions, and microbial community in a two-year field trial.

Contamination by microplastics (MPs) is a serious problem affecting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, but despite the large number of papers published in recent years, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on soil is still debated. This work aims to evaluate the effects of different amounts (0, 1, 2 % v/v) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microparticles (1-0.25 mm in size) on soil properties over time. Specifically, in a field plot experiment lasting about 2 years, treated and control soils were periodically sampled and analysed for their physical (aggregate stability and distribution),

Demographics, risk factors and prevalence of chronic cough in Asian general adult population: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic cough is the most common medical problem for patients presenting to primary and secondary health care bringing a significant disease burden. Asia has the largest population size, with diverse cultures and environments. However, there is no comprehensive report of the prevalence, underlying causes, and disease burden of chronic cough among the general adult population in Asia. We therefore aimed to summarize the epidemiology of chronic cough in Asian general adult population. METHODS: A narrative search of PubMed database, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Scie

Personalised, GIS-based counselling to promote habitual walking in mobility-limited and chronically ill older adults: protocol of the MOBITEC-Routes randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a cornerstone of health for older adults. Recent evidence underscores that even regular light activity, such as routine walking, offers substantial health benefits. Traditional approaches to promoting walking often overlook the importance of the local neighbourhood environment and the wide range of abilities and preferences of older adults. A personalised walking intervention - emphasizing personal preferences and local facilitators by employing Geographic information System (GIS)-based methods for communication and goal setting - might help to overcome problem

Digital communication and social cognition in adults with frontal lobe epilepsy: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) face problems with social cognition (SC) since their difficulties in humor appreciation, facial and eye gaze emotional recognition. The effects of frontal (and temporal) seizures on SC may be understood in terms of emotion recognition (ER), Theory of Mind (ΤοΜ), empathy, and social behavior deficits in relation to their relevant pathophysiology. The impact of FLE on SC as expressed in digital environments still represents a terra incognita, as well as the objective of this exploratory work. OBJECTIVE: We aimed at exploring, elaborate and c
