[Climate and air pollution].

Climate and air pollution are closely related. On the one hand, the climate is more and more influenced, locally as well as globally, by the tremendous concentration of pollutants in our atmosphere. Certain elements of the climate are, on the other hand, directly responsible for the process of dilution and dispersion of pollution emission. Of particular importance is the phenomen of ventilation and inversion. The significance of knowing the regional climatic peculiarities is presented by ways of a smallspace-example of the ventilation existing at the valley of river Aare and of the frequency o

[Deep immersion in the light of current scientific knowledge].

Physiological and technical problems related to deep diving are discussed. Starting from a brief summary of fundamental data, the Author deals with breathing mixture, the diver protection, copression rates and other various problems the principal syndromes originated by gases at high pressure in hyperbaric conditions. An analysis of the most important physical factors which can interfere with the tolerability for long period in such artificial athmospheres has been conducted.

Effect of prenatal heat stress on brain growth and serial discrimination reversal learning in the guinea pig.

Exposure of pregnant guinea pigs to an environmental temperature of 42 degrees C for 1 hr daily on Days 20-24 of gestation resulted in a significant reduction in the birthweight and brainweight of newborn offspring. These deficits persisted to early maturity and were still evident at 250 days of age following behavioral testing. Although some degree of postnatal neurogenesis and brain growth had occurred, this was not sufficient to compensate for the retarding influence of prenatal hyperthermia. Heat stress was also observed to seriously impair learning performance on the original discriminati

Muscle as a thermodynamic machine.

Three main problems in the energetics of muscular contraction confront us at the present time:- (1) Thermodynamics. This is a labyrinthine subject in the sense that there are often several equally correct ways (that may appear different) of arriving at the same result. The recent advances in the kinetics of the reactions of muscle proteins have increased still further the need for understanding among muscle physiologists-and other biologists-of those parts of thermodynamics that concern them directly, notably those relating work and chemical change. (2) Energy balance. Over the whole cycle of

A physiological analysis of walking in the American lobster (Homarus americanus).

The normal, unrestrained, forward walking of the lobster was studied with a closed-circuit television system and a video-tape recorder. A frame-by-frame analysis was undertaken and measurements made of unilateral stepping sequences, contralateral and ipsilateral phase relations between pairs of legs, the movements at the leg joints primarily involved in stepping and their differences in each of the four pereiopods. The order of stepping was expressed in terms of the probability of any leg following any other leg and it was found that while there is a preferred order, there is considerable vari

Physical abuse of children as a public health problem.

This review of the physical abuse of children by their parents or other adults is an attempt to present the epidemiological data on this subject in terms of a model which will facilitate public health intervention. Child abuse is a public health problem of sizable proportions in many nations. Studies of the problem have been largely concentrated in the United States, but the problem has also been of concern in many other nations throughout the world. Epidemiological findings are summarized, and a number of the major sociological and psychiatric theories of child abuse are discussed. A model of

Chronic obstructive airway diseases. Current concepts in diagnosis and comprehensive care.

Physicians and paramedical personnel often find the early diagnosis and differentiation of obstructive airway diseases to be a challenging problem. The history and physical examination are often not enough to allow the physician to detect either the presence of, or determine the type of, disease present. Patterns of pulmonary function abnormality to determine the presence of obstructive or restrictive defects are discussed. Guidelines useful in the differentiation of obstructive airway diseases are presented. Once a patient with COAD is assessed, the physician needs to outline a therapeutic pr

Hydrogeologic Constraints on Yucatan's Development.

The Republic of Mexico has an ambitious and effective national water program. The Secretaria de Recursos Hidraulicos (SRH), whose director has cabinet rank in the federal government, is one of the most professionally distinguished government agencies of its kind in the Americas. Resources for the Future, Inc., has been assisting the World Bank with a water planning study which the Bank is undertaking jointly with the Mexican government. The study is intended to provide guidelines for the development of government policies and projects designed to bring about the most efficient use of Mexico's

Interpersonal and economic resources.

High population density and increased institutional specialization, which are relatively novel features of human society. have provided conditions for a more efficient exchange of universalistic resources, while decreasing the opportunity for exchanging particularistic ones. The parallel with physical environment is striking: in both cases technology has created new problems in the process of solving old ones. Whether it is natural resources or interpersonal resources, physical ecology or social ecology, recognizing and defining the new problem is the first step toward its solution. The import

Rheumatism in industry: a review.

Anderson, J. A. D. (1971).Brit. J. industr. Med.,28, 103-121. Rheumatism in industry: a review. Information about causes, effects, and prevention of rheumatic disease among industrial workers lacks standardization, as shown by the literature in this field; one reason for this is that there are discrepancies about the range of diseases and syndromes which should be included under this heading. The Industrial Survey Unit of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council defined a rheumatic complaint as musculo-skeletal pain not related to recent (i.e., within six weeks) trauma. A study by the Unit of the

Some considerations relating to the role of Culex pipiens fatigans Wiedemann in the transmission of human filariasis.

This paper is concerned mainly with the relationship between microfilarial periodicity and vector periodicity. The so-called "non-periodic" Pacific form of Wuchereria bancrofti in fact shows a well-marked and relatively constant periodicity. The amplitude of this periodicity is low, which may account for the difficulty of detecting it in small clinical samples. The periodicity is well adapted to the biting cycle of Aëdes polynesiensis, though less so than that of the "semi-periodic" Brugia malayi to forest Mansonioides. Microfilarial periodicity is discussed in the light of recent work on circ
