Feasibility and acceptability of a shelter-based health empowerment program for pregnant and parenting youth experiencing homelessness.

Parenthood is common among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), with multi-generational implications for health. Research on how to improve health among this historically marginalized population is limited. Our community-university partnership assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a shelter-based health empowerment program, which aimed to improve health among YEH and their children and prevent unplanned pregnancies. Drawing on frameworks from implementation science, we conducted semi-structured interviews with program participants (n = 11). We then conducted thematic analysis, using

The cyclical and intersecting influence of substance use, homelessness and criminal legal policy on risk among minoritized people who use drugs.

The US has seen an alarming rise in overdose mortality among people experiencing homelessness and incarceration. Drug overdose and homelessness are dual crises that disproportionately impact Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native communities due to historic and ongoing structural racism. Our objective was to better understand the intersection of substance use, homelessness, and criminal-legal involvement among these populations to inform harm reduction and policy. We completed in-depth semi-structured interviews with racially minoritized people who use drugs (PWUD) in Michigan, New

Help me, and I'll help myself (and others). A narrative inquiry into older women's experiences of health and homelessness.

BACKGROUND: While women's homelessness is increasingly recognized as a gendered issue, experiences of aging while homeless remain underexplored. This study examined how older women navigate intersections of aging, health, and homelessness, focusing on how these experiences are shaped by structural and social factors. METHODS: Women's lived experiences were explored and interpreted using a narrative approach. Eleven women (aged 57-65 years) took part in two in-depth interviews each, followed by participation in three sequential focus groups. Data were analyzed iteratively informed by Riessman'

Breast cancer screening for persons experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Primary care providers (PCPs) care for their patients in part by helping them to follow cancer screening guidelines, including screening mammography. However, completing screening and follow-up due to abnormal results can be difficult for PCPs caring for patients with barriers to care, such as persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). The large population of PEH in the US have many unmet healthcare needs, high cancer prevalence and mortality, and therefore a need for cancer screening interventions. Hence we created and evaluated a specialized breast cancer screening program for PEH.

The Health Impacts of Extreme Weather Events: A Clinical and Equity Lens.

As clinicians, we are faced with challenges when it comes to extreme weather events that are accelerating and reshaping clinical practice; driving rising heat-related illness, worsening air quality, expanding infectious disease ranges, and increasing injuries, displacement, and mental health strain. These impacts fall hardest on communities already facing structural inequities, including older adults, low-income households, pregnant individuals, racial and ethnic minorities, outdoor workers, people with disabilities, and those experiencing homelessness. As climate-driven hazards intensify, cli

Association between parental death during childhood and health and wellbeing in adulthood in 22 countries and regions: a retrospective, outcome-wide analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and epidemiological evidence suggests that adults who have experienced the death of a parent or caregiver in childhood are at elevated risk for adverse health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine cross-national variation in indicators of health and wellbeing among adults who experienced the death of a parent by age 12 years. METHODS: In this retrospective, outcome-wide analysis, we analysed data from Wave 1 of the Global Flourishing Study, a 5-year pre-registered longitudinal panel study (2024-28) of nationally representative adult participants (N=202 898) aged

Impact of Street Medicine on Emergency Department Use: A Three-Year Evaluation of People Experiencing Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) frequently utilize the emergency department (ED) for acute and primary healthcare needs. Loyola Street Medicine is a multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, students, and other professionals who provide weekly healthcare services to PEH at a train station in Chicago. The objective of the study was to identify the specific patient demographics, chief complaints, and clinical interventions associated with increased odds of these patients reporting that they would have sought care at an ED had Loyola Street Medicine been unavailable. The Incompetent to Stand Trial Crisis and Homelessness: Cause or Effect?

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a pervasive societal problem for large numbers of people, leading to numerous negative outcomes. Research has shown that the prevalence of mental disorders among individuals experiencing homelessness is consistently higher than in the general population, in turn, being associated with a higher likelihood of incarceration. In California, this may relate to the rapidly increasing numbers of individuals found incompetent to stand trial since 2010. AIMS: We sought to explore relationships between homelessness, mental disorders and community mental health treatment in t

Sociodemographic and Clinical Profile of Homeless Patients Attending the Emergency Department of a Tertiary Care Centre in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India: A Prospective Observational Study.

Introduction Homeless individuals are a highly vulnerable population with complex medical and social needs. Emergency departments (EDs) often serve as the primary point of contact for healthcare for homeless persons in India, yet systematic data on their profile and outcomes from tertiary care settings remain limited. Methodology A prospective observational study was conducted in the emergency medicine department of a tertiary care centre in North India from July 2022 to December 2023 (18-month duration). All homeless patients aged over 18 years presenting to the emergency department and meeti

Internalized Homophobia and Mental Health among Youth Experiencing Homelessness: a Correlational Study.

LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness face elevated risks of poor mental health. This study explored whether internalized homophobia, the internalization of negative societal beliefs about one's sexual identity, is associated with mental health outcomes in this group. We analyzed baseline data from 133 LGBTQ+ youth aged 16-25, recruited from shelters and drop-in centers in Houston, as part of the Come As You Are clinical trial. Internalized homophobia was measured using the Sexual Identity Distress Scale, and mental health symptoms were assessed using validated scales for distress, depression

Breastfeeding, Breastmilk Feeding and Formula Feeding Within the Closed, Temporary Accommodation of Australia's COVID-19 Quarantine.

During 2021-2022, families with infants and young children were among the > 450,000 people who spent 2 weeks in Australia's institutional COVID-19 quarantine. Given pre-existing lack of emergency planning for children, there were concerns about whether parents would be adequately supported in this temporary accommodation. This paper reports on research considering the breastfeeding, breastmilk feeding and formula feeding of infants and young children in Australia's COVID-19 quarantine. Two-hundred and sixteen parents who quarantined with children aged 0-36 months completed an online survey wit

Therapeutic policing: How public-order homelessness policy reconfigures psychiatric nursing work.

On July 24, 2025, a U.S. executive order reframed unsheltered homelessness around public order, encouraged broader civil commitment, prioritized enforcement of camping restrictions, and directed agencies away from Housing First. This policy paper analyzes how those levers may shift coercion and administrative burden into psychiatric settings. Likely nursing effects include role drift toward legal-interface work, thinner voluntariness, documentation pressure, moral distress, and capacity strain. Canadian Housing First evidence and World Health Organization rights-based guidance provide internat

Viral Respiratory Infections: Influenza.

The influenza virus is a highly contagious respiratory pathogen that causes yearly seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics, leading to significant health and economic consequences. It spreads through droplets, aerosols, and surfaces. Infected individuals are contagious before symptoms appear, with peak infectivity early in the illness. In the United States, the 2024-2025 influenza season was the most severe since 2017-2018, with an estimated 47 to 82 million cases, up to 1.3 million hospitalizations, and up to 130,000 deaths. The risk of adverse outcomes is higher for vulnerable groups, in

Psychiatric hospitalization of homeless patients over 55 years old. Retrospective study in the largest French psychiatric hospital.

To date, there have been only a few scientific studies about characteristics of homeless patients hospitalized in psychiatric wards, and even fewer about the elderly. This is despite the fact that France, like all Western countries, is facing a general aging of its population and an increasing prevalence of homelessness. The objective of this single-centre retrospective study is to compare the sociodemographic data, psychiatric and somatic diagnoses, and hospitalization characteristics of patients over 55 years of age consecutively admitted to the Groupe Hospitalo-Universitaire Paris Psychiatr

A Systematized Review of Traumatic Stress and Substance Use Interventions in Young Adults: Implications for Intervention Development with Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

Young adults experiencing homelessness (YEH; aged 18-25) face high rates of co-occurring trauma and substance use problems. Trauma, homelessness, and substance use exacerbate one another, leading to a cycle that prolongs homelessness and negatively impacts health outcomes. Despite clear links between trauma, homelessness, and substance use, no intervention to date has effectively interrupted the cycle for YEH. This study used a systematized review to characterize existing interventions addressing traumatic stress and substance use to identify potentially adaptable components, implementation st
