Re-Examining Age-Friendly Communities for Older People with Insecure Housing Histories.

In many countries, population aging and increasing rates of housing security among older people are unfolding simultaneously. While the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) framework is largely considered the leading framework for developing age-supportive communities, it does not adequately account for the ways in which a community may be inclusive, supportive, or age-friendly for older people with lived experience of housing insecurity. This paper began with a question: What would an age-friendly community look like for older people with experiences of housi

Feasibility and acceptability of strategies aiming to increase smoking cessation rates among people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have high smoking rates, limited access to smoking cessation support, and face specific challenges in quitting tobacco. To date, optimal strategies to reduce smoking rates in this marginalized population are not clearly identified. This study aims to identify the feasibility and acceptability of smoking cessation interventions evaluated among PEH. METHODS: We assessed evidence regarding the feasibility and acceptability of interventions promoting smoking cessation among persons aged >18 years, experiencing homelessness, and who smoke tobacc

Criminal Legal Referrals Were Associated With Delayed Substance Use Treatment, Disparity By Housing Status.

Timely access to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is critical to improving health outcomes, yet treatment delays remain a barrier. Using national Treatment Episode Data Set-Admissions data from the period 2017-22, we conducted the first national study to examine the association of referral pathways and housing status with treatment delays among 962,702 first-time SUD admissions. Compared with individual referrals, criminal legal referrals were associated with more than twice the odds of delayed admission. This association differed by housing status and was strongest among people experien

'That's when we start being analogue': Mitigating digital harms through street-level service provision.

BACKGROUND: Across the world, public services including health services are increasingly digitalized, offering both new opportunities for harm reduction service provision, but also creating new barriers to services for structurally vulnerable people who use drugs. This article offers an examination of the effects of digitalization for street-level service providers in Denmark, which has one of the most digitalized public sectors in the world. METHODS: Using a multi-method qualitative approach, the study combines interviews, focus groups, field observations and a participatory workshop with se

A Scoping Review of the Peer-Reviewed Research on Alternative First Response for Mental and Behavioral Health Crisis and Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: Alternative first response programs (i.e., non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls involving mental or behavioral health crisis) have expanded rapidly, but implementation has outpaced development of an empirical evidence base. This scoping review assessed the current state of peer-reviewed research on these programs, including how they are defined and studied, and where gaps remain. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR, a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies was conducted. Eligible studies described non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls for service involving mental or beh

Beyond belonging: Racial homelessness as a culturally specific risk factor for suicidal ideation in multiracial young adults.

OBJECTIVES: Multiracial young adults experience disproportionately high rates of suicidal ideation, yet the culturally specific risk factors contributing to this elevated risk remain understudied. The present study examined whether racial homelessness-the experience of not belonging to any racial community-uniquely predicts suicidal ideation severity above and beyond established correlates from the interpersonal theory of suicide. METHOD: A community sample of 190 multiracial young adults (ages 18-25) recruited through Qualtrics panels completed online measures of racial homelessness, racial

Occult Bartonella Quintana Infective Endocarditis Incidentally Diagnosed During Pre-Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Workup in a Patient Without Classical Risk Factors.

Bartonella infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare cause of initially blood culture-negative IE, classically associated with cat flea exposure in Bartonella henselae infection or body lice infestation among individuals experiencing homelessness or alcoholism in Bartonella quintana infection. We report the case of an 84-year-old man with severe calcific aortic stenosis who was undergoing evaluation for pre-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Cardiac computed tomography (CT) unexpectedly revealed a peri-annular cavity consistent with a drained or healed peri-annular abscess, despite th

Periods of hardship: a scoping review of menstrual health challenges among young people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Millions of people worldwide lack resources to manage menstruation in a safe and dignified way. Period poverty in high-income countries affects vulnerable populations, including young people experiencing homelessness. This leads to poor menstrual health and negatively affects physical, psychological, and social wellbeing. This review examines the available evidence on menstrual health among people experiencing homelessness to inform understanding of the menstrual health challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordanc

Autism and Homelessness: Risk and Protective Factors in a Bayesian Analysis of Autistic Characteristics.

Autistic individuals are overrepresented in homeless populations, yet mechanisms driving this association remain unclear, particularly in the context of diagnostic access and structural inequities. We surveyed 333 adults in Australia, assessing autistic traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient [AQ]-50), homelessness risk factors, adaptive functioning and social support. Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models were used to estimate associations. Associations between autistic traits and homelessness probability differed according to diagnostic status. Among participants without a formal diagnos

Clinical correlates of homelessness and cannabis use among U.S. low-income veterans.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness and cannabis use may interconnect in complex ways. This study used a nationally representative sample of low-income U.S. veterans to investigate histories of homelessness and cannabis use, and their associations with clinically relevant variables. METHOD: Of 1031 veterans, 235 were categorized into three separate groups: history of lifetime homelessness but no lifetime cannabis use (HLS; n = 27 13.2%), no HLS but lifetime history of cannabis use (CU; n = 174, 73.2%), and both homelessness and cannabis use (HLS + CU; n = 34, 13.6%). Effect of voucher receipt on perceived discrimination in boys and girls in the Moving to Opportunity study.

Section 8 vouchers help low-income families relocate to lower-poverty neighborhoods, potentially altering neighborhood racial/ethnic composition and exposure to perceived discrimination. The Moving to Opportunity study randomized families to a low-poverty voucher, traditional voucher, or control. Low-poverty voucher recipients could use vouchers in neighborhoods with <20% poverty, while traditional voucher recipients had no restrictions. We estimated the effect of voucher receipt at baseline (1994-1998) on non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic adolescents' perceived racial/ethnic discrimination in 2

The Effect of COVID-19 on Length of Stay in Hospital and Patient Population Following Burn Injury.

Acute burn care is heavily resource-dependent and thus was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study sought to examine the relationship between COVID-19 and the length of stay (LOS) in hospital following burn injury, as prolonged admissions have implications on both individuals and healthcare systems. Additionally, this study explored how COVID-19 affected the homeless burn population, as homelessness has been associated with longer hospital admissions due to limited post-discharge resources. Single-center, retrospective cohort study using data from the Burn Registry and medi
