Multiple sclerosis and housing insecurity or forcible displacement: A scoping review.

There is an increasing number of people experiencing housing insecurity and forcible displacement globally. We perform a scoping review, searching PubMed (1 January 1990-30 June 2026) for the key terms "housing insecurity," "inadequate housing," "houselessness," "homelessness," "housing," "forcible displacement," "refugee," "asylum seeker," and "internal displacement," focusing on the outcomes of persons with multiple sclerosis. We estimate the approximate number of persons with multiple sclerosis in these situations. The number of reports from persons with multiple sclerosis who experience ho

Past-year violence experienced by transgender women living with HIV with or without recent involvement in transactional sex: the French national cross-sectional ANRS-Trans&HIV study.

INTRODUCTION: Stigma and violence experienced by transgender women and women engaged in transactional sex may negatively impact health and access to HIV care. We investigated typologies of past-year violence experienced by transgender women living with HIV (TWLH), with or without involvement in transactional sex (TWLH-TS and TWLH-nTS, respectively) in France. METHODS: We used data from the 2020-2022 French national cross-sectional ANRS-TRANS&HIV survey, which included TWLH recruited in 36 HIV care centres. We performed latent class analyses using variables representing combinations of past-ye

Community perspectives on health needs and assets in underserved Dublin areas: a participatory qualitative study.

Health inequalities, deeply connected to broader social determinants such as unemployment, inadequate housing, and limited access to healthcare and essential services, remain a global concern. These factors disproportionately impact socioeconomically underserved communities, even in high-income countries. In Ireland, similar disparities are evident within urban areas. Although policy and practice increasingly promote community participation, there is limited evidence on how communities perceive and articulate their challenges and priorities. This study, conducted in collaboration with Healthy

Intimate partner violence and psychological well-being: Do housing conditions moderate the effects?

Prior studies link intimate partner violence (IPV) to poor mental health, especially among those with low socioeconomic status or limited support. However, few have explored how housing conditions may moderate these psychological effects. This study investigates the relationship between IPV and psychological well-being, with a particular focus on two outcomes: depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. It also examines whether housing conditions amplify or mitigate individuals' psychological responses to IPV. Data were drawn from the 2008 to 2022 Korea Welfare Panel Study (n = 14,350 married i

Infectious disease outcomes associated with inadequate housing and access to healthy living practices in Australia: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Inadequate housing and living conditions underpin significant health and wellbeing inequality in Australia, particularly for Indigenous people. This review aimed to define infectious disease (ID) outcomes used to measure the health impact of inadequate housing in Australia within a research context. DESIGN: A systematic review of published studies following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. DATA SOURCES: Four online databases were searched in May 2024 with no date restrictions using terms relating to housing, ID and Austra

Modification of temperature-morbidity associations by social determinants of health.

Exposure to high ambient temperature is responsible for more than 11,000 deaths and over 230,000 disability-adjusted life-years in the United States each year. However, which individuals and populations are most at risk, and why, is still not well understood. In 2015, a subset of "Z" diagnosis codes (or "Z-codes") were introduced as a standardized option for healthcare providers to document the social needs and conditions of their patients. To assess heat-related risk across social determinants of health (SDoH), we leverage these codes using a dataset of patient-level emergency department (ED)

Perceived housing inadequacy and health: Cumulative and gendered effects beyond objective housing standards.

This study investigates whether cumulative exposure to perceived inadequate housing conditions is associated with multiple health outcomes, independent of objective housing standards. We further examine whether these associations differ by gender. Using data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS, 2006-2022; N = 22,975 individuals; 177,267 person-years), we constructed a cumulative measure of subjective housing inadequacy based on the number of consecutive waves in which respondents reported lacking adequate soundproofing, ventilation, natural lighting, or heating. We employed individual f

The Primate Welfare INdicators project (PWIN): For an objective and standardised welfare assessment of non-human primates used in research.

Considering the welfare of animals used in research is crucial for both the validity of the results obtained and for the social acceptance of animal research. In Europe, the majority of the 5,784 primates currently used for scientific purposes are macaques (Macaca fascicularis and M. mulatta). Inadequate housing conditions can lead to various physiological and behavioural alterations that indicate poor welfare and can impact upon the quality of the data collected. Although there are a number of documents that summarise scientific knowledge on welfare issues and describe the basic needs of maca

Less than One Meal Per Day: Food Insecurity and Deprivation Among Indigenous Oaxacan Farmworkers in California.

Food insecurity and lack of wellbeing among farmworker populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, are well documented. However, Indigenous migrant farmworker communities remain an understudied group, despite comprising over 40% of the current migrant farmworker labor workforce in California. This mixed-methods study assessed wellbeing and food insecurity among 40 Oaxacan Indigenous migrant farmworker households in the California Central Valley from 2022 to 2023. This study is the first of its kind utilizing the common Self-Reliance Index (SRI) among Indigenous migrant farmworkers.

Impact of housing improvements on childhood hospitalization rates in a large cohort of low-income families in New Zealand.

The global burden of disease arising from exposure to inadequate housing is a significant public health concern. In New Zealand over 25,000 children are hospitalized annually with preventable housing-related conditions, with Māori and Pacific children particularly at risk. The Healthy Homes Initiative (HHI) is a community-led, government-funded, multicomponent intervention aimed at improving health outcomes for children at risk of housing-related illness in low-income families. In this study, we examined hospitalizations for children enrolled in the HHI between 2014 and 2023. Using Poisson reg

Reframing neglect in neglected tropical diseases and related environmental determinants: A scoping review of photovoice studies.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect over one billion people worldwide and are closely linked to environmental determinants, including unsafe water, poor sanitation, inadequate housing, and vector-borne exposure. Yet, the voices of affected communities remain insufficiently centred in research or policy. Photovoice, a participatory visual method, has potential to reframe the neglect of NTDs by centring affected communities and their lived experiences. This scoping review aims to explore the application of photovoice in NTD research and its related environmental determinants.

Environmental Concerns for Children in Humanitarian Crises.

Children in humanitarian settings may be exposed to toxic substances (eg, lead, mercury, fluoride, pesticides, tobacco, and carbon monoxide) through inadequate housing, polluted indoor air and water, or being located near industrial sites. They may become ill after ingesting contaminated food (such as cassava containing cyanide) or being sprayed with chemicals dispersed from airplanes. Children who are refugees from war also may be exposed to environmental contaminants such as depleted uranium. As the climate changes, more children will live with extreme heat. Pediatric clinicians should be aw

Climate change-related weather emergencies, aging and inequalities among racialized older adults: An intersectional climate justice framework informed scoping review.

As global aging accelerates alongside intensifying climate disruptions, older adults face growing exposure to extreme weather events that threaten their health and well-being. Yet, the experiences of racialized older adults, categorized as those who are non-White or non-Indigenous who often inhabit the intersection of social and ecological shaped by social marginalization, economic disadvantage, and other factors remain insufficiently understood. Guided by an Intersectional Climate Justice lens, this scoping review examined how racialized older adults across diverse contexts experience and res

Assisted dying, disability and voluntariness under social injustice.

Recent reports from Canada have sparked debate about cases in which people with disabilities request assisted dying not primarily because of their medical conditions, but because of poverty, inadequate housing or insufficient care. Some argue that although such situations are tragic and unjust, such requests are autonomous and should be acceded to.In this paper, I instead argue that requests motivated by suffering that is caused by remediable social injustice for which the state is responsible should not be regarded as sufficiently voluntary. Hence, they do not fulfil the high standards for au

Mechanisms of overdose from unintentional fentanyl use when intending to use stimulants: a qualitative study of people who use stimulants and avoid opioids.

BACKGROUND: As many as two-fifths of nonfatal opioid overdoses in San Francisco, CA are from unintentional fentanyl use, with most people intending to use stimulants. However, the mechanisms of fentanyl exposure are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To characterize mechanisms of unintentional fentanyl use resulting in non-fatal overdose among people who intend to use stimulants and not opioids. METHODS: We interviewed 17 people using stimulants and avoiding opioids who experienced an overdose attributed to unintentional fentanyl use between August 2023 and July 2024. State Eviction Moratoria and Foster Care Entries.

IMPORTANCE: Foster care entry is associated with long-term adverse outcomes for children and substantial public costs. Housing hardship is common among child welfare-involved families, and eviction moratoria implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic may have stabilized housing for at-risk families. Little is known about whether population-level housing policies, which are generalizable to the broader population, are associated with foster care entries. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether state eviction moratoria are associated with foster care entries. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort
