Health promotion, community development, and participation: an approach to native health education.

Health-care parameters for Natives living in isolated northern areas of Canada show rates of life expectancy, morbidity, and infant mortality far worse than the Canadian average. Improving access to medical facilities has not affected these statistics. Socioeconomic factors such as inadequate housing and lack of sewage systems are likely contributors to poor health, as is an attitude of hopelessness and impotence on the part of Native people. Health-care providers have recognized the need for health promotion as well as treatment, but have often instituted programs that blame the victim. An ap

Accidental hypothermia in the sunbelt.

Hypothermia in colder climates in the United States occurs predominately as a result of exposure of alcoholics to cold outdoor temperatures. Among 24 cases of accidental hypothermia occurring at a university medical center in the deep South, differences in clinical presentation were identified. In contrast to experience in colder climates, 17/22 cases (76%) developed at home. Alcohol was a factor in only 8/24 (33%). The elderly were at greatest risk, accounting for 16/24 patients (65%). Factors suggested to account for the high incidence of hypothermia in the elderly include abnormal temperatu

Epidemiology of a thermonuclear bomb-burst over Nashville, Tennessee: a theoretic study.

A thermonuclear bomb explosion over any city in the world would have a devastating effect on the population and environment. For those who survive, with or without injuries, life would become primitive with little or no uncontaminated food or water, and with inadequate housing, fuel, and medical care, resulting in a breakdown of family and interpersonal relationships. This theoretic study of the potential outcome of a thermonuclear bomb-burst over Nashville, Tennessee, discusses epidemiologically the wide range of medical and psychologic effects from the direct trauma of blast and fire, widesp

Childless and one-child Families in the Soviet Union.

Soviet authorities have recently initiated a demographic policy aimed particularly at reducing the levels of childless and one child families. An examination of available data indicates that the USSR has a level of childlessness equivalent to that of the United States, but a frequency of one child families that is considerably greater. Popular explanations for very low fertility, such as inadequate housing or finances, do not explain the decision to remain childless or to stop childbearing after a single child is born. Furthermore, the effects of education and female labor force participation

Spinal cord injury in an inner city hospital.

During the first six years of existence of the rehabilitation unit in a black inner city major municipal hospital, 53 patients with spinal cord injury were admitted. A retrospective study of these patients sought answers to questions concerning etiology, patient characteristics, services provided and method of delivery, and advantages and disadvantages of rehabilitation in a community hospital. Findings revealed differences in causation of spinal cord injury between women and men and between patients with paraplegia and quadriplegia. tthe male paraplegic patients were the youngest; their life

Association of childhood mortality with housing status and unemployment.

The association between mortality at the ages of 0-4 and 5-14 years in the county boroughs of England and Wales for 1971, using Kendall's correlation technique, and a variety of socioeconomic indicators, was computed. Kendall's partial correlation technique was used to determine whether any association remained when the effect of social class and unemployment was kept constant. At ages 0-4 years there was a significant and positive association between mortality and low socioeconomic position, high density housing, inadequate housing amenities, and the unemployment rate (P less than 0.001). A s

Policy responses to complex issues: the case of black infant mortality.

There is a considerable body of literature that documents the higher infant mortality among American Blacks. This disparity has been attributed to many socioeconomic factors such as poor pre- and postnatal maternal health care, poor nutrition, inadequate housing, and so forth. Yet a careful examination of the data reveals that infant mortality is higher for Blacks regardless of socioeconomic condition. The present paper explores possible roots of this higher mortality rate in the centuries of nutritional deprivation suffered by Blacks in America. If a sizeable fraction of the higher black rate
