Urban planning, informal settlements, and maternal health outcomes: Investigating the role of built environment in antenatal and postnatal care utilization in China.

China's rapid urbanization has spawned extensive informal settlements, where millions of migrant families live in overcrowded, underserved areas. These environments, characterized by inadequate housing, poor sanitation, unsafe conditions, and limited healthcare access, significantly impede the utilization of maternal healthcare, specifically Antenatal (ANC) and Postnatal Care (PNC). This study examines how built environment characteristics influence ANC and PNC use among women in these settlements across four major Chinese cities. A cross-sectional study collected data from 800 women who had g

The Experiences of Service Providers Who Care for Homeless Pregnant or Early Parenting Women.

BackgroundHomelessness among women and children is a growing concern, shaped by intersecting structural inequities. Service providers working with women who are homeless, particularly those who are pregnant and/or parenting young children, navigate complex responsibilities that span legal, medical, housing, child welfare, and psychosocial domains. These responsibilities are often carried out in under-resourced environments and in response to trauma rooted in systemic injustice. A feminist pragmatist perspective recognizes the relational, embodied, and context-specific nature of this work, and

A narrative review of nursing in Saudi Arabia: prospects for improving social determinants of health for the female workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses represent the backbone of global healthcare systems where women typically deliver care and men lead. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) highly relies on foreign female nurses despite Saudisation policies designed to localize its workforce. Yet, in the context of an ambitious 2016-30 national health transformation program to modernize public health in a high-income and rapidly developing country, intersectional inequalities persist for migrant and local nurses in KSA. There are challenges in the specialisms of palliative and end-of-life care where there is a weak public and

Overview of Donkey Welfare and Husbandry Practices in Asia.

Donkeys (Equus asinus) play a critical role in agricultural, transport, and livelihood systems across Asia, yet they remain among the most neglected domestic species in terms of welfare, management, and research attention. This review synthesizes recent literature on donkey welfare, health, breeding, and conservation across Asia, highlighting regional disparities and emerging challenges. A systematic review of published studies identified welfare determinants including nutrition, workload, shelter, and veterinary access. Welfare conditions are found to be poorest in South Asia, particularly in

The need for community-controlled tools to monitor health impacts of housing and living conditions in Australia.

Despite millennia of strong and continuous culture, inadequate housing has profound consequences on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. For example, the excessive and inequitable burden of childhood skin infections, rheumatic fever, gastrointestinal disease and ear infections can all be linked to failures in housing policy, funding and maintenance. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and peak bodies continue to call for greater community control and investment in housing. A commonality among stakeholders in this otherwise complex

Bovine coccidiosis and molecular characterization of pathogenic Eimeria species in dairy cattle on Grati-Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria spp., is a protozoan infection that rapidly spreads in the gastrointestinal tract of cattle. Coccidiosis requires attention from all parties, including the government, because it remains a neglected disease that impacts milk and meat production, potentially compromising food security and nutrition. The disease is frequently observed on farms with poor management systems, inadequate housing sanitation, and suboptimal environmental conditions. Eimeria spp. primarily cause mortality in calves less than 1 year old. Infection occurs when cattle consume spo

"You can't heal yourself in that setting and you wouldn't expect other people in this country to": Yarning about housing and environmental health in remote Aboriginal communities of Western Australia.

Remote Aboriginal communities in Australia are located on traditional lands holding deep cultural significance and meaning for residents. However, systemic inequity rooted in colonisation has driven persistent housing and health disparities, with inadequate environmental health conditions within homes and communities a prominent example. Embedded within the SToP (See, Treat, Prevent) Skin Sores and Scabies Trial, which aimed to reduce skin infections in children aged 5-9 years by 50 % across nine Kimberley communities, this qualitative sub-study sought to understand access to and perceptions o

Prevalence and factors associated with Tungiasis among school age children in Sub Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is an overlooked tropical disease resulting from the penetration of the skin by sand fleas. It leads to significant suffering and can be fatal, particularly affecting school age children and elders, primarily above 60 years old, in rural and urban slums across Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its great public health consequences, the condition remains largely under reported by the scientific communities mainly in Sub Saharan African countries. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of Tungiasis and associated factors among school-age children in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS AN

Prevalence and Risk Mapping of Intestinal Parasites in the "Hungry Valleys" Region of Slovakia.

Helminthiases remain a significant global health concern, affecting both the Global South and increasingly the Global North. In Slovakia, intestinal parasitic infections impact marginalised populations, particularly the population of Roma inhabitants, who often face inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water. This study examines the prevalence of intestinal parasites in the "Hungry Valleys", an economically challenged region of eastern Slovakia, with a higher number of Roma inhabitants. A total of 3816 stool samples were analysed using sedimentation methods, reveali

The association between social drivers of health, HIV status and physical activity with perceived stress in U.S. women with or without HIV.

BACKGROUND: The physiological adaptation to chronic stress can have deleterious health effects. Although higher physical activity (PA) has been linked to lower stress, it is unknown whether social driver of health (SDOH) burden and HIV status impact the stress reduction effects of PA due to their unique contributions to stress. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional sample (n = 444) from the Women's Interagency HIV Study during 2014-2019, multivariate linear regression modeling was used to estimate the effect of SDOH burden and PA on stress. SDOH burden was defined as the sum of individual-level in

Assessment of the Syndemic Relationship Between Individual, Social, and Structural Determinants of Tuberculosis Among People Living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a critical public health issue in Johannesburg, South Africa, driven by a complex interplay of individual, social, and structural factors. This study assessed the syndemic relationship between these determinants to understand their collective impact on TB burden and treatment outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among TB patients attending selected clinics, examining behavioural risks (e.g., smoking, alcohol use, HIV co-infection), social conditions (poverty, overcrowding, stigma), and structural challenges (access to healthcare, migration status). The res

Potential pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes in household environments: a study of soil floors and cow dung in rural Bangladesh.

In low- and middle-income countries, living in homes with soil floors and animal cohabitation may expose children to fecal organisms, increasing the risk of enteric and antimicrobial-resistant infections. Our objective was to understand whether cow cohabitation in homes with soil floors in rural Bangladesh contributed to the presence and diversity of potential pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the home. In 10 randomly selected households in rural Sirajganj District, we sampled floor soil and cow dung, which is commonly used as sealant in soil floors. We extracted DNA and p

Prevalence and Risk Factors Associated with Rib Lesions in Dairy Cows.

Unilateral or bilateral hard bony enlargement is sometimes palpated over dairy cows' ribs. Although usually not painful, these injuries may have welfare and economic implications and can be used as indicators of poor husbandry conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of rib lesions in dairy cows kept in intensive systems and to identify the risk factors either associated with the housing or with the animal's clinical history. We examined the ribs of all 1319 lactating cows from 22 Portuguese dairy farms. In each farm, housing and animal potential risk factors wer

Inadequate Social Housing and Health: The Case of Oliver Bond House, The Liberties, Dublin.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate housing is an important social justice issue that adversely affects health. METHODS: Drawing on an extended ethnography case study, this paper presents the results of a resident-led survey to highlight the health consequences of inadequate social housing, as residents wait for a 'fair regeneration' of their social housing 'flats' estate within a gentrifying inner-city Dublin neighbourhood. RESULTS: Four key concerns were identified by residents as part of this analysis: (1) substandard housing conditions which are physically harmful to health; (2) the emotional toll of

Depleted housing elicits cardiopulmonary dysfunction after a single flaming eucalyptus wildfire smoke exposure in a sex-specific manner in ApoE knockout mice.

Although it is well established that wildfire smoke exposure can increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the combined effects of non-chemical stressors and wildfire smoke remains understudied. Housing is a non-chemical stressor that is a major determinant of cardiovascular health, however, disparities in neighborhood and social status have exacerbated the cardiovascular health gaps within the United States. Further, pre-existing cardiovascular morbidities, such as atherosclerosis, can worsen the response to wildfire smoke exposures. This represents a potentially hazardous interaction

Community Hospital Interventions Addressing the Medical and Social Needs of Patients : Patient Perspectives From the CHART Investment Program.

High utilizers of acute care in nonurban settings are at risk for poor health outcomes. Much of Massachusetts is nonurban, with many residents experiencing limited access to health care providers, fragmented health care services, inadequate housing, and low health literacy. This study examines patient perspectives on the Community Hospital Acceleration, Revitalization, and Transformation (CHART) investment program, a state-based grant program focused on advancing community hospitals toward value-based care. We found that CHART staff engaged patients in care coordination and patient advocacy, p
