Trajectories of mental health problems in unaccompanied young refugees in Germany and the impact of post-migration factors - a longitudinal study.

Unaccompanied young refugees (UYRs) are at an elevated risk of continuing psychological distress, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), depression, and anxiety. The post-arrival situation in a host country plays an important role in increasing or reducing mental health risks for UYRs. This study aimed to examine the trajectory of psychological distress and post-migration factors experienced by UYRs in Germany with five assessments every six months over a two-year period.Standardised self-report questionnaires were used to assess PTSS (CATS-2), depression (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7)

A preventive care approach for oral health in nursing homes: a qualitative study of healthcare workers' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Oral health problems are common among care-dependent older adults living in nursing homes. Developing strategies to prevent the deterioration of oral health is therefore crucial to avoid pain and tooth loss. A standardized work widely used in nursing homes in Sweden is the quality register Senior Alert (SA), which assesses age-related risks concerning e.g. pressure sores, falls, malnutrition and oral health. The oral health assessment is performed with the Revised Oral Assessment Guide-Jönköping (ROAG-J), which also includes planning and implementation of preventive oral care inter

Insights into the associated risk factors of malnutrition among nursing home residents: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition often remains undetected in older persons, leading to increased health problems and comorbidity, prolonged hospital stays and readmissions. In 2020, data from the interRAI Home Care (interRAI HC) instrument was used to determine malnutrition status according to some of the criteria of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). The interRAI HC instrument showed to be effective as a screening tool for the risk of malnutrition. The goal of the present study is to use the interRAI Long Term Care Facilities (interRAI LTCF) instrument for nursing home re

Understanding mealtime behavioral problems in nursing home residents living with dementia: a group concept mapping approach.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia frequently experience mealtime behavioral problems that can result in reduced or lack of intake of food or fluids. Multiple underlying causes and expressions of mealtime behavioral problems complicate its interpretation and intervention, because problems originating from cognitive and functional decline and behavioral changes may interact. Healthcare professionals and family caregivers may encounter a variety of practical and moral dilemmas in dealing with these problems. We aimed at a better understanding of mealtime behavioral problems and related complex is

Interpreting Context in Rural and Remote Aged Care Facilities in Readiness for a New Care Model: A Mixed Method Study.

BACKGROUND: Geographical isolation compounds limited access to healthcare services and skilled workforce for the provision of rural aged care. Residents have complex chronic disease management and end-of-life care needs. An undersupply of general medical practitioners due to retirement, attrition or unfilled training places in Australia has impacted recruitment to rural areas. Nurse practitioners have been identified as a potential solution. AIM: To describe and explore the inner (local and organisational) and outer (wider health system) contexts of healthcare, from the perspective of care st

Models for delivery and co-ordination of primary or secondary health care (or both) to older adults living in aged care facilities.

BACKGROUND: The number of older people is increasing worldwide and public expenditure on residential aged care facilities (ACFs) is expected to at least double, and possibly triple, by 2050. Co-ordinated and timely care in residential ACFs that reduces unnecessary hospital transfers may improve residents' health outcomes and increase satisfaction with care among ACF residents, their families and staff. These benefits may outweigh the resources needed to sustain the changes in care delivery and potentially lead to cost savings. Our systematic review comprehensively and systematically presents t

The relation between resident-related factors and care problems in nursing homes: a multi-level analysis.

BACKGROUND: Care problems such as decubitus and fall incidents are prevalent in nursing homes. Yet, research regarding explanatory factors on these care problems is scarce. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to identify the degree to which a diverse set of resident-related factors (e.g., care dependency levels) are associated with the sum of six care problems (pressure ulcers, incontinence, malnutrition, falls, freedom restriction, and pain), and (2) to investigate which resident-related factors are associated with each of these six care problems individually. METHODS: Data were collected

Long-term effects of environmental dynamic lighting on sleep-wake rhythm, mood and behaviour in older adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-wake problems and depressive symptoms are common in people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) and are thought to be related to the unstable sleep-wake rhythm in this population. Previously, we showed that after increasing environmental light exposure, mid-sleep and sleep onset advanced, and mood improved over a period of 14 weeks after installing environmental dynamic light installations in the living room of people with IDs. We invited participants of that short-term study to take part in the current study on sleep-wake rhythm, mood and behaviour in older adults with IDs 1

Effect of self-determination theory-based integrated creative art (SDTICA) program on older adults with mild cognitive impairment in nursing homes: Study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive benefits of early non-pharmacological approaches have been demonstrated in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, older adults living in nursing homes have more severe cognitive impairment problems and lower initiative and compliance to participate in complex interventions. Hence, it important to investigate more attractive and sustainable methods to prevent or delay cognitive decline. The present study adopts the self-determination theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework to innovatively develop an integrated art-based intervention for older adult

Pharmacists as patient advocates: A series of case studies illustrating the impacts of a regular pharmacist service in residential aged care (nursing homes).

BACKGROUND: Medicine-related problems are common in older people living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). Recognising the significant medicine-related problems, the Australian government has announced a $345 million funding package to employ on-site pharmacists in RACFs starting in 2023. The new on-site pharmacists are to provide a range of clinical services to reduce medicine-related adverse events, promote quality use of medicines, and improve clinical governance and education. Underpinning these services, the authors argue that pharmacists play the critical role as resident advoc
