The present study assesses the effects of an architectural intervention on residential crowding stress and poststressor effects. Residents of long-corridor, short-corridor, and long-corridor-intervention dormitory floors were surveyed and social behavior and space use patterns were systematically observed over a 3-month period. As predicted, although students living in the three environments were initially comparable, residents of the long-corridor floor (40 residents sharing space) reported more crowding and residential social problems over time, whereas short-corridor residents (20 residents

During a term of probation for the doctoral course in sociology at the university of Nijmegen a research was made for the relatinship between patients and staff on the ward of a nursing home. This relation was investigated with the use of Elias and Scotson's model of an established and outsiders figuration. In this figuaration are several sources of power, as fysical capacities, knowledge, key-positions and cohesion, important. These are considered more thoroughly. Some of the central problems of a nursing home are becoming more clear in the elaboratin of processes as exclusion and stigmatizat

Primary care physicians are often confronted with demands that elderly patients be institutionalized. Patients who appear to have no new medical problems present a therapeutic dilemma. Should they be admitted to a general hospital or should they be placed directly in a nursing home? This longitudinal prospective study involved 29 consecutive elderly patients judged to be in need of nursing home placement but who were without medical indications for admission. They were assessed and treated in a 30-bed ward of a general hospital. The mean length of stay was 19 days. Of the 29 patients, 8 (24 pe

The study progress in the move from institutional toward community care a study was made of all children below 16 years of age for whom application for residential care had been made between 1970 and 1974. These children were followed-up in 1975 to (1) compare services needed with services obtained for those residing in hospitals compared to those living in the community, and (2) ascertain factors determining placement. Among those who applied, level of functioning was associated to a greater extent with age than degree of retardation. Two thirds of the youngest group was non-ambulant, at age

In mid-1977 the Kern County (Calif.) Department of Mental Health Services undertook a survey of residents and operators of group and family care homes in the county to obtain their views on how services in the homes might be improved and to assess the level of skills of the patients placed there. A total of 139 former patients and 26 operators agreed to be interviewed. The results showed that few of the patients had overt behavioral problems and most were capable of self-care. For the most part the patients were satisfied with the homes, although problems related to finances and lack of outsid

Chronic social disablement is caused by three types of factor: impairment, e.g. slowness in schizophrenia; social disadvantage, e.g. lack of opportunity to develop social or vocational skills; and an underconfidence or unduly low self-esteem which is reactive to impairment and disadvantage. The last of these factors is particularly evident in 'institutionalism', a condition in which the individual comes to acquire a contentment with institutional life and wishes to lead no other. Many long-stay patients in large mental hospitals used to be 'well-institutionalized' but it became recognized that

This paper examines perceptions of problems expressed by persons living and working in a 100-bed skilled nursing home. Data were obtained from administrative staff, professional and nonprofessional nursing staffs, therapy staff, auxiliary staff, and residents by means of interview, observation, and analyses of records. The relationship between perceptions of problems and location within the organization and the scope and content of roles played was studied. We sought to ascertain the extent to which members agree or disagree with one another as to what are problems, to locate areas of agreemen

Chronic in-patients from a sample population of 48 women and 43 men were selected for an experimental hospital-hostel and for local authority hostels. Two-thirds were found suitable for the former but only a sixth for the latter. The problems of selection for and management at the experimental hostel are described, and the overall results discussed in relation to recent proposals for the residential care of chronic patients.

As part of a study of long-term institutional care of the elderly, this report presents a comparison of the characteristics, health problems, and state of mind of 193 elderly applicants for such care (Group A) with those of 141 elderly persons living independently in the community (Group I). Group A members were older, living with a spouse less often, and had low incomes. They showed much more cerebrovascular disease, incontinence, recent loss of independence in the activities of daily living, dementia, recent hospitalization, loneliness, and depression. They had had much less recent involveme

Foster home care for the elderly, as an alternative to living independently, living with relatives or living in an institution, has been a neglected area of investigation, although such care is a nationwide phenomenon. This survey of all licensed Family Care Home operators in the Louisville, Kentucky area provides baseline data regarding the characteristics of providers of adult foster care and the recipients. Data were obtained from 183 persons caring for minimally impaired adults in their own homes and on 422 residents in these foster home settings. Of the residents, 69.5 percent were aged 6
