Perspectives of culturally and linguistically diverse families in the management of children with type 1 diabetes in Western Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Children with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) from different ethnic backgrounds are growing in proportion in clinical practice and tend to have a higher risk of poor health outcomes. The study aimed to investigate the perspectives of culturally and linguistically diverse families in the management of children with T1D in Western Australia. DESIGN: A generic qualitative approach was used. Families of children and adolescents with T1D with first-generation African, Asian or Middle Eastern background were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. The interviews were audio-recorded

Policies and interventions to remove gender-related barriers to girls' school participation and learning in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review of the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Gender disparities in education continue to undermine girls' opportunities, despite enormous strides in recent years to improve primary enrolment and attainment for girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). At the regional, country and subnational levels gender gaps remain, with girls in many settings less likely to complete primary school, less likely to complete secondary, and often less likely to be literate than boys. The academic and policy literatures on the topic of gender-related barriers to girls' education are both extensive. However, there remain gaps in knowled

Challenges in accessing and utilising health services for women accessing DOTS TB services in Kolkata, India.

Challenges in accessing and utilising TB treatment are a major reason for the existing gaps in tuberculosis (TB) control in India. Twenty qualitative interviews were conducted with women who were attending or had attended a directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) clinic in Kolkata, India. The resulting data were analysed using a thematic approach. Our results indicated that women experienced several challenges categorised as (1) DOTS specific challenges, (2) lack of client friendly services, and (3) resource constraints. DOTS specific challenges included having to come to the clinic fo

Canada considers a basic income guarantee: can it achieve health for all?

There is little doubt that the implementation of a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) in Canada and other liberal welfare states would alleviate some of the most egregious examples of absolute poverty that contribute to poor health such as lack of adequate food and shelter and inability to meet basic household and personal needs. BIG would likely improve the health of the most disadvantaged by moving them closer to the relative poverty line. Yet, advocacy for and implementation of BIG carries potential dangers. Since health improves with every step up the income ladder, simply moving people closer t

Factors contributing to non-adherence with treatment among TB patients in Sodo Woreda, Gurage Zone, Southern Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

Poor adherence by tuberculosis (TB) patients to their medication contributes not only to the worsening of their TB situation but also paves a way for incidence of drug resistance. This study, hence, aims to explore factors contributing for non-adherence of TB treatment among TB patients in Sodo Woreda, Gurage Zone, Southern Ethiopia. A qualitative study, which included 22 in-depth interviews from four health centers and seven health posts, was conducted from February 25 to April 27, 2014. Although the drugs were given free of charge, many patients were unable to adhere to their treatment becau

Combined effects of prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and material hardship on child ADHD behavior problems.

IMPORTANCE: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogenic and neurotoxic combustion by-products commonly found in urban air. Exposure to PAH is disproportionately high in low income communities of color who also experience chronic economic stress. OBJECTIVE: In a prospective cohort study in New York City (NYC) we previously found a significant association between prenatal PAH exposure and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) behavior problems at age 9. Here, we have evaluated the joint effects of prenatal exposure to PAH and prenatal/childhood material hardship on ADHD be

Children in Conflict Zones.

The nature of war has changed dramatically. Today's conflicts happen where people live and they take a brutal toll on children. Heavy bombardment and destruction in war creates a humanitarian crisis where there is lack of adequate food, clean water and medicine. The consequences of war can have major impact on the health of children for years to come. Traumatic events can have a profound and lasting impact on the emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physiological functioning of an individual. Depending on the circumstances, the psychosocial impacts of disasters can range from mild stress react

Synergistic effects of fumonisin B1 and ochratoxin A: are in vitro cytotoxicity data predictive of in vivo acute toxicity?

Contamination of food and feeds by mycotoxins is a major problem of human and animals health concern which is also extremely detrimental to economy. Mycotoxins producing moulds may produce a diversity of toxins such as aflatoxins, ochratoxins, trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins, tremorgenic toxins and ergot alkaloids. Although toxicological, environmental and epidemiological studies have addressed the problem of these toxins one by one, more than one mycotoxin are found usually in the same contaminated commodities. That rises the incommensurable problem of multi-toxicosis in which the res

Social justice issues related to uneven distribution of resources.

This article examines the social justice issues resulting from the uneven distribution of resources. In this article, justice theories are discussed in relation to two of these issues: lack of adequate food and shelter and inequitable access to an appropriate continuum of health care. Public health nurses have the obligation to deal with the results of poverty and the uneven distribution of resources, which pose a threat to the common good in the United States and throughout the global community.

A technique of occlusal adjustment for food impaction in the presence of tight proximal contacts.

Food impaction occasionally occurs in interproximal sites even though the contacts are tight. In this study of 14 patients with food impaction involving tight contacts, the lack of adequate food escape grooves was common to all 14 sites. Uneven marginal ridges and prominent opposing cusps were less common and, together, made up slightly more than half of the contact sites. An occlusal adjustment technique to create adequate food escape grooves, as well as reduce prominent opposing cusps and correct uneven marginal ridges, completely eliminated food impaction in all but one site. This site achi

Update of survey, regulation and toxic effects of mycotoxins in Europe.

The most frequent toxigenic fungi in Europe are Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium species. They produce aflatoxin B1 transformed into aflatoxin M1 found in the milk, as well as Ochratoxins and Zearalenone, Fumonisin B1, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin and deoxynivalenol (vomitoxin), which are of increasing concern in human health. These mycotoxins are under continuous survey in Europe, but the regulatory aspects still need to be set up and/or harmonised at European level. They are found in foodstuffs and are not destroyed by normal industrial processing or cooking since they are heat-stable. Some of

Prevalence of undernutrition and iron deficiency in pre-school children from different socioeconomic regions in the city of Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Lack of adequate food and in particular high quality protein, is one of the causes of malnutrition in children which could result in retarded growth. Iron deficiency is common in populations where protein sources are of vegetable origin; however in northern Mexico where the bean consumption is high, anemia is not a problem. The primary staples in the Mexican diet are corn tortillas and beans. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthropometric condition of children 4-6 years old living in the city of Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico and to determine the prevalence of anemia. Mean Z scores for

Diapause induction and termination in the predatory mite Euseius finlandicus in peach orchards in northern Greece.

The course of diapause induction as well as of diapause termination in females of the predatory mite Euseius (Amblyseius) finlandicus Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in Northern Greece was determined by transferring females during winter and early spring from peach trees to a short day (LD 8:16) or a long day (LD 16:8) photoperiod both at 20 degrees C. The first diapause females were found in mid September and by the first week of October all the females were in diapause. The mean number of days required for diapause termination under the short day photoperiod LD 8:16 was gradually reduced from

Maternal protein deprivation enhances the teratogenicity of ochratoxin A in mice.

Teratogenic effects of the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OA) were investigated in protein-deprived mice. Pregnant CD-1 mice were assigned to control (26%), 16%, 8%, and 4% protein diet groups and treated by gavage with 0, 2, or 3 mg/kg OA on gestation day 8 (plug = day 1). They were killed on day 18 and subjected to teratological examination. OA treatment decreased prenatal survival, particularly at the two lowest dietary protein levels. OA at the higher dose also inhibited fetal growth in all groups, with a similar effect at the low dose in the 16% and 4% protein groups. Gross malformations associa
