BACKGROUND: Household food-product variety reflects the breadth of foods reported as available to households but does not directly measure dietary diversity, diet quality, nutrient adequacy, or food insecurity. We examined national trends in low available food variety among Peruvian households from 2015 to 2024 and associated socioeconomic and territorial factors.
METHODS: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative ENAHO data from 2015-2024. Low available food variety was defined as ≤71 distinct food products at the household level, corresponding to the lowe

In today's Mexico, approximately 50% of children experience multidimensional poverty, with Indigenous children particularly affected; half of them live in extreme poverty and nearly all lack access to social security. The current political landscape threatens to exacerbate these issues. Reductions in public spending and the dismantling of federal child health programmes are likely to further hinder children's development, well-being and health by limiting access to vital services like childcare, education and healthcare. Children's hospitals in Mexico may increasingly depend on philanthropy an

There has been a sustained rise in cash transfer programs to the poor, and burgeoning interest in interventions promoting early childhood development. We draw together these trends to study whether open enrolment interventions targeting cash transfers to pregnant mothers unintentionally induce those not pregnant to accelerate birth timing in order to start receiving the cash. Our study context is rural Northern Nigeria, where households have high demand for liquidity because they are reliant on volatile earnings from agriculture, are subject to frequent natural and man-made aggregate shocks, a

High out-of-pocket expenditures (OOPE) continue to make access to healthcare a challenge among informal sector workers in most low-income countries. In response, Uganda has proposed a national health insurance scheme (NHIS), although the informal sector's willingness and ability to pay for it remains unexplored. This study assessed the willingness and perceived ability to pay for the proposed NHIS, along with their determinants, among informal sector workers in Iganga and Mayuge Districts, Uganda. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Iganga and Mayuge Districts between April and May 2019.

Social capital is extremely important in determining health outcomes yet relatively little is known about how different types of social capital impact on individuals' health outcomes, particularly for the poorest in society. We use secondary data generated from a quasi-experimental study conducted among extremely poor women in rural Bangladesh and apply Propensity Score Matching (PSM) technique to create comparable treatment and control groups. Using a comparative analytical approach, we examine how social capital effects vary and investigate how different social capital measures are associate

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with disabilities are at increased risk of experiencing poor mental health due to the compound effects of financial and family stressors. This study aims to identify risk and protective factors for poor mental health, particularly depression, among caregivers of young children with disabilities.
METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis, including a total of 1518 caregivers who were enrolled at baseline in a cluster randomised trial evaluating the effects of Sugira Muryango, a home-visiting parenting intervention, on early child development and violence pre

Global gender inequalities are intensifying, driven by intersecting social, political, and environmental pressures. Recent evidence shows that women bear a disproportionate burden of poverty, food insecurity, poor health, and gender-based violence. Climate change further compounds these vulnerabilities, threatening to reverse hard-won gains in gender equality, particularly in fragile and low-resource settings. Without urgent, gender-responsive and climate-informed action, millions more women and girls risk being pushed into extreme poverty in the coming decades.

Fleeing extreme poverty and violence and seeking safety and survival, families have increasingly migrated to the United States from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Limited scholarship has explored the transgenerational transmission of strategies for resilience, survival, and agency among Central American migrant families. Using constructivist grounded theory methods, this study sought to better understand these processes by exploring the transgenerational transmission of trauma and resilience in the context of forced migration and family separation within a sample of 24 mothers and youth

BACKGROUND: Elevated blood pressure (BP) is the leading cause of death globally, with the greatest burden in low-and-middle income countries. Longitudinal BP data are limited in settings of extreme poverty. We identified longitudinal BP trajectories and associated risk factors in urban Haiti.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 2073 adults (≥18 years) with ≥3 facility-based BP measurements between March 2019 and April 2025 in the population-based Haiti Cardiovascular Disease Cohort. Demographic, behavioral, and clinical data were collected annually. Participants received routine clinical care base

OBJECTIVES: Existing research has not sufficiently addressed the specific associations between internet use and the quality of life (QoL) for women experiencing extreme poverty, particularly in relation to urban-rural disparities. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how internet use is associated with QoL among Chinese women in extreme poverty and explores its implications for urban-rural inequality.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from 513 women living in extreme poverty from Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) 2021. Analytical techniques included Ordinary L

BACKGROUND: There remains a lack of evidence on which livelihoods interventions are effective for persons with disabilities, particularly given the fact that the impact of interventions varies according to contextual factors. The disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation (DIUPG) programme is an adaptation of the ultra-poor graduation programme (UPG), designed to tackle extreme poverty among persons with disabilities. The DIUPG programme has been previously evaluated in Uganda and found to have successfully improved household consumption, amidst the challenges of COVID-19 and funding cuts. The

BACKGROUND: Childhood anemia remains a priority public health problem in Peru. Although universal salt iodization is an established strategy to prevent iodine deficiency disorders, evidence on household-level salt iodization and disparities in anemia remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate anemia prevalence and evaluate disparities according to the adequacy of iodine content in household salt among girls and boys aged 6 to 59 months in Peru, as well as to explore variation according to area of residence and household wealth level.
METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study using data from the

PURPOSE: Poverty is strongly associated with obesity, particularly among women. Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) may protect against obesity, but longitudinal studies are limited. We assessed: 1) the effects of PCEs at age 15 on obesity risk at age 22; and 2) whether these effects vary by exposure to extreme poverty in childhood.
METHODS: We analyzed data of female participants in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a national birth cohort oversampling socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. PCEs were assessed across three domains separately and cumulatively: maternal, neig

Background/Objectives: Food insecurity (FI) is a major public health challenge and is monitored globally using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). In Peru, the recent incorporation of the FIES into the National Household Survey (ENAHO) enables the generation of nationally representative estimates. This study evaluated the statistical validity of the FIES and estimated the prevalence of food insecurity among Peruvian households. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using ENAHO 2025 data. FI was assessed using the eight-item FIES. Rasch analysis evaluated item fit, severity or

Background/Objectives: Socioeconomic inequalities continue to shape health service use in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to quantify socioeconomic inequalities in formal health service utilization among Peruvian adults using nationally representative data. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted using the 2023 National Household Survey (ENAHO). The sample included 77,793 adults aged 18 years or older. Formal health service utilization was defined as self-reported use of outpatient, emergency, or hospitalization services during the preceding 12 months. Surv

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy is a public health problem in Latin America, with a higher prevalence in rural areas. This population faces barriers to accessing education and healthcare services, increasing the risk of maternal and neonatal complications.
METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional analytical design and included 72 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years in Lonya Grande. The associations between structural and intermediate social determinants of health and the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy were assessed.
RESULTS: Among the structural determinants, extreme poverty (PR: 2.48

UNLABELLED: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasites Leishmania infantum (LI) and Leishmania donovani (LD). VL disproportionately affects populations that live in extreme poverty and those affected by climate change. Treatment options are limited, fiscally prohibitive, and toxic to some that receive treatment. In cases where VL remains untreated, death is inevitable. Although disease prevalence is increasing in affluent countries with robust research capabilities, there remains little economic incentive to search for new, more accessible non

INTRODUCTION: In low- and middle-income countries, healthcare systems rely heavily on out-of-pocket payments, causing financial hardship and limiting access to care. Globally, 800 million people spend over 10% of household income on healthcare, driving 100 million into extreme poverty due to catastrophic health expenditures (CHE). In South Asia, out-of-pocket (OOP) payments remain the primary funding source, with India and Bangladesh reporting significant CHE burdens. Health insurance (HI) can reduce costs, improve access and mitigate CHE, playing a key role in achieving universal health cover

This article offers a critical literary analysis of The Brothers Karamazov through the lens of literary humanism, focusing on dimensions of social suffering and caregiver burden in end-of-life contexts. These themes are examined through the story of Captain Snegiryov and his family, key figures in Dostoevsky's narrative. By analysing the captain's experience as a caregiver for his gravely ill son in the context of extreme poverty, this study highlights four central aspects: (1) social suffering within the framework of total pain, (2) the caregiver burden, (3) neglect by healthcare systems and
