A glance at the literature on infanticide: filicide due to mental illness.

A bibliography of infanticide amounting to 3674 articles, books and theses was searched for case descriptions of filicide: 1050 had sufficient information to make a diagnosis: in 417 the death of the child was due to some form of abuse and 633 to some form of mental illness. This paper considers those due to mental illness under the headings of depression (306 cases), psychosis (119), vengeance (113), mercy-killing (49), alcoholism and drugs (31), epilepsy (10) and sleep disorders (5). The material was divided into 37 tables in the search for high-risk groups. There were approximately equal nu

Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Shedding Light on Two Blind Spots in Harm Reduction Discourse.

Harm reduction policies aim to reduce drug-related harms. This has historically involved providing tailored health services to people who use drugs to do so more safely. Social justice is another defining element of harm reduction. This component aims to reduce drug-related stigma and minimise the social harms experienced by people who use drugs by advocating for the decriminalisation of the possession of illicit drugs. However, the harms that occur before drugs reach a user's hands or a country's borders have received less attention in harm reduction. These harms include the environmental dam

Environmental and economic drivers of persistent open defecation in the rural state of Osun, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Open defecation remains a major environmental health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria bearing one of the highest global burdens despite increasing access to improved water sources and widespread awareness of sanitation-related health risks in rural areas. Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) emphasizes behavioural change, prompting families to build their own latrines using local materials. CLTS drives community mobilization to stop open defecation collectively; the widespread prevalence of the practice in rural areas reveals a significant gap between sanitation kno

Climate change and infectious diseases: breaking the poverty-disease-environment trap.

Climate change and infectious diseases jointly form a self-reinforcing poverty disease environment trap that disproportionately harms impoverished populations in low- and middle-income countries. Climate change amplifies the transmission of vector -borne, water-borne, and zoonotic infectious diseases by expanding vector distribution, triggering water source contamination via extreme weather, and disrupting ecological balance. Poverty worsens vulnerability due to insufficient health infrastructure, limited resource access, and weak adaptive capacity, with sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia facin

Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa in a Resource-Limited Setting: A Case Report From Mohamed Adam Sheikh Children's Teaching Hospital Hargeisa, Somaliland.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare, genetically determined mechanobullous disorder characterized by profound skin and mucosal fragility. The management of EB is complex, multidisciplinary, and palliative, posing extreme challenges in resource-limited settings where diagnostic capabilities and specialized care are scarce. This report highlights the utility of clinical acumen and the devastating impact of socioeconomic barriers on disease progression. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old male from rural Somaliland presented to a tertiary children's hospital with a lifelong history of

Association of documented social deprivation with cardiovascular and liver outcomes in alcohol-associated liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a growing public health concern, and outcomes may be influenced by social determinants of health. Although social disadvantage has been linked to adverse outcomes in other diseases, its specific association with ALD-related complications is not well defined. APPROACH: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX research network. Adults with ALD were classified as experiencing documented social deprivation based on International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes for extreme pover

On the topical issue of assisted dying: the insurmountable challenges of human existence, and the right to exit.

Although the issue of medical-assisted dying or medical aid in dying (MAID, euthanasia, and medical-assisted suicide) has a long history, it has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. Around the world, many governments remain opposed to MAID. In places where MAID is legally permitted, it is highly regulated, and typically, unbearable suffering limited to a few serious and incurable medical conditions determines eligibility. MAID eligibility based on unbearable suffering but limited to a few medical conditions is unfair because suffering is inescapable in life, is not limited t

Shotgun metagenomic analysis of the oral microbiomes of children with noma.

Noma is a rapidly progressive orofacial gangrene that predominantly affects children living in extreme poverty. Despite its documentation since antiquity and its designation as a World Health Organisation Neglected Tropical Disease in 2023, the microbiological cause of noma remains poorly understood, with no specific organisms confidently identified as definitive aetiological agents. Here, we present the first deep shotgun metagenomic profiling of oral saliva microbiomes from 19 Nigerian children with acute noma. Our analyses of this preliminary study reveal marked microbial dysbiosis in noma

Dental disease among adults with and without HIV in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS).

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are prevalent and linked to systemic health outcomes. People with HIV may face elevated oral disease risk, yet data on dental disease in this population remain limited. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed oral health data collected from 2927 participants in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (968 women with HIV [WWH], 450 women without HIV [WWoH], 941 men with HIV [MWH], 568 men without HIV [MWoH]) who had intraoral photographs collected and evaluated by dentist-researchers. We used log-binomial regression to examine associations between demographic

Evaluating the effect of social mobility on the incidence of HIV/AIDS in low-income populations: A dynamic microsimulation study with large cohort data.

The control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a significant challenge for public health in Brazil, a country marked by profound social inequalities. In this study, we aimed to use the integration of large data analyses with microsimulation models to evaluate the effect of alternative income-based social mobility policies on AIDS incidence, both in the overall population and in specific vulnerability groups. We created a dynamic microsimulation model of a cohort of 1 million individuals starting from a large dataset of low-income people in 2012 in Brazil, integrated with input parameters from th

Antimicrobial resistance in Noma control: a costly neglect within existing neglect.

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a severe gangrenous orofacial disease affecting malnourished children aged 2-6 years in extreme poverty, with 85-90% mortality if untreated. Recently classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease, it is managed mainly with empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to undermine treatment, yet AMR remains largely absent from Noma research and policy. This review examines AMR prevalence and drivers in Noma, identifies knowledge and policy gaps, and proposes recommendations. METHODS: We reviewed literature on Noma microbiology and documented

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Amidst the global challenge of extreme poverty, the livestock sector can significantly contribute to global sustainable development goals by enhancing resilience, smallholder productivity, and market participation. The Indian livestock sector is one of the largest in the world with a total livestock population of 535.82 million, ∼10.7% of the world's livestock population. Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) holds significant importance in India and other Asian countries, notably contributing to their economies by surpassing cattle in milk production and providing various valuable products. Stress and Traditional Support: The Role of Orphans' and Vulnerable Children's Primary Caregivers in Rural Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Orphans' and Vulnerable Children's (OVC) primary caregivers (PCGs) in Ethiopia live with multiple social and emotional problems stemming from extreme poverty, war, environmental disasters, and the HIV pandemic. Family and community supports are strained, leaving OVC's PCGs dependent on inconsistent humanitarian aid. This aid is typically focused on OVCs and does not address PCG well-being. This study aimed to assess PCG well-being and explore their perceived stress and the traditional family and community coping mechanisms. METHOD: Participants from the Oromia region of

Socioeconomic Factors Associated with Non-Adherence to Antihypertensive Treatment Among Older Adults Affiliated to the "Pension 65" Program in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among older adults, and its management largely depends on treatment adherence. Previous studies have shown that socioeconomic factors such as income, education, and access to healthcare can significantly influence adherence. However, little is known about how these factors affect older adults living in extreme poverty in Peru, particularly beneficiaries of the "Pension 65" program. This study aims to explore these associations in a highly vulnerable population. OBJECTIVE: To identify the socioeconomic factors ass
