Offsets, carbon markets, and climate and economic justice.

Today, 682 million people, or 8.5% of the world's population, live in extreme poverty, which the World Bank defines as subsisting on less than $2.15 per day. The majority live in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. The traditional pathway for economic development available to these countries has historically required a lot of energy; the world's richest countries frequently have the highest per capita historical greenhouse gas emissions and are also primarily responsible for anthropogenic climate breakdown. Lower-income countries today confront very reduced emissions budgets if catas

Examining the relationship between psychosocial adversity and inhibitory control: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of children growing up in extreme poverty.

Exposure to psychosocial adversity (PA) is associated with poor behavioral, physical, and mental health outcomes in adulthood. As these outcomes are related to alterations in developmental processes, growing evidence suggests that deficits in executive functions-inhibitory control in particular-may in part explain this relationship. However, literature examining the development of inhibitory control has been based on children in higher-resource environments, and little is known how low-resource settings might exacerbate the link between inhibitory control and health outcomes. In this context,

A Mobile Gaming App to Train Teenage Mothers on Appropriate Child Feeding Practices: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition is an underlying factor in nearly 50% of 1 million estimated annual deaths among Nigerian children aged <5 years. Inappropriate maternal infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are basic contributors to child undernutrition. Teenage motherhood exacerbates the problem of inadequate child feeding. One possible intervention method to improve IYCF knowledge and practices of teenage mothers is the use of mobile gaming technologies. Despite extreme poverty in low- and middle-income countries, a ubiquity of mobile phone networks exists. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

Correlation of Pediatric Surgical Infrastructure With Clinical and Economic Outcomes: A Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: A significant burden of unmet pediatric surgical disease exists in low- and middle-income countries. We sought to assess the associations between the installation of a pediatric operating room (OR) and clinical and economic outcomes for families with children in Ethiopia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed of children who underwent elective surgery in a tertiary-level Ethiopian public hospital, comparing patient outcomes before and after OR installation in August 2019. Clinical data were collected via chart review, and an inpatient economic survey was administer

Structural injustice, marginality, and neurolaw: a normative comparative and theoretical approach.

In this paper, we introduce a perspective based on a comparative viewpoint on the Colombian Penal Code and a theoretical approach to neurolaw and criminal responsibility in contexts of marginality and extreme poverty. We present a further response to the debate on how structural injustice impacts criminal responsibility. By offering a comparative and theoretical insight, this paper enriches the debate and provides an understanding of how legal systems might address these issues. The paper then suggests that other legislations can follow the rule of Article 56 of the Colombian Penal Code, which

[Palliative care: social and territorial inequalities].

SOCIAL AND TERRITORIAL. INEQUALITIES.Palliative care can be provided wherever the patient lives or receives care, considering its environment, in coordination with healthcare professionals, social and medico-social professionals. The way in which palliative care is provided varies from one country to another, depending on resources, cultural values, healthcare systems and policies of each country. There are disparities in access, particularly in rural areas and for vulnerable populations. One of the main limitations to the development of palliative care, after budgetary issues, is the insuffic

Economic effects of livestock disease burden in Ethiopia: A computable general equilibrium analysis.

The burden of animal disease is widespread globally and is especially severe for developing countries dependent on livestock production. Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and the second-largest human population on the continent. Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa; however, much of the population still lives in extreme poverty, and most households depend on agriculture. Animal disease negatively affects domestic livestock production and limits growth potential across the domestic agricultural supply chain. This research investigates the economic eff

Qualitative process evaluation of a disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation programme in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of evidence regarding what works to help persons with disabilities escape the trap of poverty. To address extreme poverty among the general population, poverty graduation approaches have gained popularity. These programmes combine direct livelihood assistance (e.g. provision of assets) with wider support given to individuals (e.g. skill development). However, these interventions have rarely been adapted to be disability-inclusive. OBJECTIVES: The present research is a qualitative process evaluation of a disability-inclusive poverty graduation intervention, imple

Brain morphometry and chronic inflammation in Bangladeshi children growing up in extreme poverty.

Over three hundred million children live in environments of extreme poverty, and the biological and psychosocial hazards endemic to these environments often expose these children to infection, disease, and inflammatory responses. Chronic inflammation in early childhood has been associated with diminished cognitive outcomes, and despite this established relationship, the mechanisms explaining how inflammation affects brain development are not well known. Importantly, the prevalence of chronic inflammation in areas of extreme poverty raises the possibility that it may also serve as a mechanism e

"You can't die here": an exploration of the barriers to dying-in-place for structurally vulnerable populations in an urban centre in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: One measure of quality in palliative care involves ensuring people approaching the end of life are able to receive care, and ultimately die, in the places they choose. Canadian palliative care policy directives stem from this tenet of autonomy, acknowledging that most people prefer to die at home, where they feel safe and comfortable. Limited research, however, considers the lack of 'choice' people positioned as structurally vulnerable (e.g., experiencing extreme poverty, homelessness, substance-use/criminalization, etc.) have in regard to places of care and death, with the option

Drugs, crime, and racial disparities in the homeless population gathered from a sample of police reports: Evidence from Brazil.

Brazil is one of the most unequal democracies in the world. Although the number of homeless individuals in our country has increased due to the reproduction of people living in extreme poverty, little has been discussed about their welfare and rights. In the present study, we provide analysis with a theoretical-methodological approach directed at homeless people living in the wealthy neoliberal middle-sized southeast city of São Paulo, Brazil's richest state. Data was acquired from police reports with prior permission from the Civil Police of São Paulo and the São Paulo Interior Judiciary Poli

Feasibility and acceptability of wearable devices and daily diaries to assess sleep and other health indicators among young women in the slums of Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Individuals in Uganda's urban slums have unmet mental health needs due to limited healthcare infrastructure, poor environmental conditions, and extreme poverty. Researchers often use wearable devices to measure factors associated with mental health including sleep, physical activity, and exposure to environmental stressors. However, the use of wearables for research purposes in low-resource settings is limited. This pilot study investigated the feasibility and acceptability of wearables and accompanying daily diaries to assess sleep and other health indicators in young women living

Incidence and intensity of catastrophic health expenditure and impoverishment among the elderly: an empirical evidence from India.

World health statistics (2022) report that about 1.4 billion people have incurred catastrophic health expenditure (CHE), and half of its population have pushed into extreme poverty due to healthcare payments. The elderly population faces a higher risk of ill health, and seeking treatment reflects in high out-of-pocket health spending (OOPHS) that results in CHE and further impoverishment. This study aims to investigate the incidence and intensity of OOPHS, CHE, and impoverishment among the older adults in India. Data utilizes from the 75th round of the national sample survey (NSS) based on hou

Exploring Maternal and Child Health Among Tribal Communities in India: A Life Course Perspective.

India experiences high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, with tribal communities disproportionately affected. Tribal populations frequently live in unfavorable socio-economic conditions and deficient social health indicators, culminating in adverse health consequences. Using a life course perspective, this qualitative study explored risks over the life course that contribute to maternal and child health problems among tribal populations in India. Additionally, the study examined barriers to utilization of healthcare services during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. Data

Uncovering the causes and socio-demographic constructs of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in an urban slum of Karachi.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal deaths and stillbirths are significant public health concerns in Pakistan, with an estimated stillbirth rate of 43 per 1,000 births and a neonatal mortality rate of 46 deaths per 1,000 live births. Limited access to obstetric care, poor health seeking behaviors and lack of quality healthcare are the leading root causes for stillbirths and neonatal deaths. Rehri Goth, a coastal slum in Karachi, faces even greater challenges due to extreme poverty, and inadequate infrastructure. This study aims to investigate the causes and pathways leading to stillbirths and neonatal deat
