Smartphone Addiction Among Zimbabwean Undergraduate Students: A Prevalence and Cross-Cultural Validation of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV).

INTRODUCTION: Smartphones are an invaluable daily tool, with 57% of the global population (4.6 billion people) having mobile access to the internet. However, excessive/problematic use of smartphones is highly prevalent globally. The use of smartphones, particularly among university students, offers many unique opportunities for learning, entrepreneurship, and social interaction. Despite these benefits, "excessive" or "compulsive" use of smartphones has emerged as a growing concern. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Sho

Implementation Science to Advance Equity in Climate-Driven Disaster Response.

Climate hazards are causing increasingly frequent and severe disasters. The populations most impacted by the health and social costs of disasters include language minorities, displaced individuals, and low-income communities. This commentary explores three key issues. First, climate hazards lead to displacement and increase vulnerability by disrupting housing, livelihoods, and access to care. Second, current emergency and disaster frameworks often overlook equity in communication, access to care, and recovery. Third, practical solutions can prioritize equity across mitigation, preparedness, re

Impact of violence on HIV outcomes among female sex workers: A global systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSW) are a key population for HIV prevention and care. Increasing evidence suggests that social and structural barriers are key drivers of HIV transmission. This global systematic review assesses whether experiencing violence is associated with worse HIV outcomes among FSW. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO databases for studies published from January 1st, 2010 to June 9th, 2026 assessing the impact of violence on HIV outcomes among FSW, without restriction to language and study design. Some studies had multiple estimates due to re

Tenant Right-to-Counsel and Emergency Department Use in Low-Income and Uninsured Populations.

BACKGROUND: Evictions are associated with numerous health harms, contributing to increased emergency department (ED) use. In 2017, New York City introduced the nation's first tenant right-to-counsel program, which lowered eviction rates by providing free legal representation to low-income renters facing eviction. Health implications of this policy are uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To test whether right-to-counsel decreased all-cause and cause-specific ED visits by low-income and uninsured individuals. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of all-payer ED utilization data (1/2016-2/2020) leveraging the

Occupational health risks from climate-related and infectious-disease stressors: A scoping review of worker safety and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines how climate-related stressors and infectious-disease conditions, including pandemic-related workplace disruptions, interact to influence worker health, vulnerability, and occupational resilience. The review focuses on shared exposure pathways, vulnerable worker populations, methodological patterns, policy gaps, and strategies for strengthening worker safety under compound hazards. Rather than treating pandemics as isolated events, the review uses pandemic conditions as a lens to understand broader, recurring occupational risks and to inform strategies fo

Global and regional burden of measles and vaccine coverage among children under 5 years, 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease Study.

Measles remains a leading cause of vaccine-preventable burden among children, particularly in low-income settings. Despite decades of progress, there are indications of measles resurgence due to stagnation in vaccine coverage. Here, using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we systematically assessed measles incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and vaccine coverage (measles-containing vaccine 1 (MCV1) and measles-containing vaccine 2 (MCV2)) among children under 5 years of age across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023.

Strongyloidiasis as a Focal Household Cluster of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in Rural Tropical Rainforest Southern Thailand: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: In southern Thailand, characterized by high rainfall for 9 months each year (2340 mm annually), hookworm prevalence is consistently higher than that of Strongyloides stercoralis. Such wet climatic conditions may favor hookworm transmission while limiting S. stercoralis. Conversely, living in crowded, cluster settlements may enhance the transmission of S. stercoralis. We aimed to determine whether S. stercoralis exhibits a focal distribution pattern-often related to close contact within households or small communities-and whether this pattern distinctively differs from that of hookw

Cost-effective and efficient diagnosis of bovine theileriosis in a low-income setting.

Sample pooling combined with conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) is a rapid and cost-effective approach for herd-level detection of Theileria spp., particularly in resource-limited settings. Bovine theileriosis is a tick-borne protozoan disease causing major economic losses to livestock production worldwide. In Sri Lanka, particularly in Jaffna, Theileria infections threaten cattle productivity, highlighting the need for affordable and sensitive surveillance tools. This study evaluated pooled cPCR for herd-level detection of Theileria spp. in cattle from three farms in Jaffna. Sixty

Protein malnutrition facilitates intestinal colonization with highly resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae through disrupted intestinal microbial metabolism.

Pediatric infections with highly resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (HR-Kp) disproportionately affect low-income countries where childhood malnutrition is prevalent. Malnutrition is an identified risk factor for infection with HR-Kp and other antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacterales, but the mechanistic underpinnings of this link and independence from other common exposures, like antibiotics, in children are unclear. Using a murine model of pediatric malnutrition, we found that mice fed a protein-deficient diet (PD) were more susceptible to colonization with HR-Kp at a 4-log lower challenge inocu

Toward cooler cities by larger homogeneous functional clusters.

Urban heat island (UHI) intensifies heat-related risks and environmental degradation in cities worldwide, yet existing mitigation strategies have largely overlooked how the spatial scale of homogeneous functional building clusters influences local climate. This scale may matter because buildings with similar functions often share similar morphology, activity schedules, and anthropogenic heat-release patterns, allowing their spatial contiguity to shape ventilation and heat accumulation. Here, we introduce the Urban Homogeneous Scale (UHS)-an indicator that measures the spatial scale of contiguo

Racial Disparities in Thymic Epithelial Tumors: Insights From a Multiracial Urban Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare thoracic malignancies for which racial disparities in outcomes remain poorly characterized. We evaluated survival outcomes across racial groups and explored the clinical and sociodemographic factors that may help contextualize any observed differences. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 128 consecutive patients with histologically confirmed TETs referred to the University of Chicago between January 1989 and March 2024. Associations between race, socioeconomic variables, and overall survival (OS) were evaluated using multivari

Climate change amplifies global mycotoxin exposure: Emerging risks and sustainable solutions.

Climate change intensifies mycotoxin contamination through rising temperatures, elevated CO2, and altered precipitation. Global surveys reveal a high and widespread prevalence of major mycotoxins in staple cereals, with low-income countries bearing the greatest burden. This escalating contamination poses a growing threat to global food security, compromising both food availability and safety. To mitigate these risks, we propose four actions: establish a predictive global surveillance system integrating climate-crop-fungal models, deploy field-ready biosensors, scale up climate-resilient agricu

Environmental, socioeconomic, and livestock-related factors associated with antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., and Salmonella enterica: A global One Health analysis.

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is a major global health threat. Beyond inappropriate clinical use, its emergence and persistence are influenced by complex interactions across humans, animals and the environment, demanding a One Health perspective. To investigate these dynamics, we conducted an ecological study on 397,103 isolates of Escherichia coli and Shigella spp. and Salmonella enterica collected from human, animal, and environmental sources in 102 countries between 2003 and 2018, using the NCBI Pathogen Detection database. Genotypically-inferred resistance to seven major antibiotic classes (

Intersectional Disparities in School-Based Autism Identification Are Occurring in U.S. Elementary Schools.

We investigated whether intersections of race or ethnicity, gender, family income, and language use are associated with school-based autism identification (SBAI) in U.S. elementary schools. We estimated logistic and multilevel logistic regression models with interaction terms, adjusting for reading achievement and school contextual factors. We used school record of autism as a student's primary disability for which special education services were being provided to indicate SBAI. We analyzed a very large, aggregated sample of U.S. fourth graders (typically 9-10 years old; N = 1,419,440) partici

County Indigent Care programs fill coverage gaps left by Medicaid restrictions: evidence from Texas.

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid restrictions exclude some low-income adults, especially in nonexpansion states and among immigrants. Local governments are payers of last resort. Texas offers an important case study: state law requires counties to maintain Indigent Care programs to extend healthcare coverage for uninsured low-income residents, yet no recent report describes their structure. METHODS: We cataloged programs in all 254 counties, using publicly available data, contact with county officials, and a state open records request, characterizing reporting, eligibility, and services, along with est

Congenital Cardiac Surgical Workforce Inequities Across 194 Countries: A Global Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect globally, yet access to surgery remains inequitable. The availability of congenital heart surgeons (CHS) relative to paediatric population needs is poorly defined. A cross-sectional study of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network was conducted across 194 United Nations-recognised countries and 54 territories and dependencies (T&Ds). Of 248 countries and T&Ds analysed, 123 (49.6%) had ≥ 1 CHS. A total of 4,296 CHS were identified; 71 (37% of recognised) countries with 189.5 million children had none. Low-income countries had a median of 0.15
