Pandemic-related stressors and social resources differentially predict competence and problem behavior trajectories of young children born during the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted family life and children's social worlds, disproportionately impacting structurally disadvantaged families. In a cohort of children born during the pandemic (N = 407, 51% male, 33.3% racially/ethnically minoritized), we modeled latent growth curves with children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors and social-emotional competence, assessed at 3 time points beginning at ∼15 months. Pandemic stressors had immediate impacts on behavior problems, associated with higher initial levels but not change over time. Conversely, pandemic impacts on competence showed

Fortitude as a Key to Reducing Burnout: Its Critical Role in Influencing the Relationship Between Organizational Support and Burnout.

GOAL: Burnout in healthcare remains a significant problem, with implications not only for physicians and advanced practice providers but also for the entire US healthcare system, including patients and payers. Significant work has been done to understand the antecedents of burnout and develop successful intervention strategies. Much of the attention has focused on either improving the work environment or enhancing individual resilience, with suboptimal results. Consequently, we examined individual fortitude-including resilience and other attributes-and its interaction with organizational suppo

The impact of specialist resource centres on autistic pupils' experience of mainstream school.

This study investigated how autistic pupils' psychological, social and educational outcomes differed in contrasting mainstream provisions. Using a three-year longitudinal quasi-experimental design, outcomes were compared across three placements: placement in a specialist resource centre, mainstream placement in specialist resource centre host schools, and placement in mainstream schools without a specialist resource centre. Autistic pupils (N = 119, aged 11-14) and matched non-autistic peers (N = 119) completed surveys and schools provided attainment, attendance, and exclusion data. Placement

Suicidal ideation in residency: recommendations for building a supportive learning environment.

Although overall suicide risk for physicians may be decreasing from historical estimates, each physician suicide is a tragic loss of life for the affected individual and their family and has a profound impact on their colleagues, their team, and their organization. Work-related problems appear to be more common prior to instances of physician suicide relative to suicide occurring in other workers, and Nasca and colleagues' study, "One Is Too Many: Suicidality Among General Surgery Residents," elucidates several factors that were associated with increased risk for suicidal ideation in the previ

Pull through together or be detached? A qualitative study of experiential learning in nurse education during interaction in age suit simulation.

AIM: To illuminate nursing students' interactions during age suit simulation from the perspective of being a blind older person and being an attendant guiding the blind person. BACKGROUND: Nursing students' understanding of age related and long-term, often multiple health problems are crucial for providing person-centred care in the home. In age suit simulation students take the perspectives of an older person which can improve their general attitudes towards older persons. However, focusing on blindness in age suit simulation is a novel concept. DESIGN: The research design of this study is

Mechanisms of Change Underlying Effects of an Early Parenting Intervention on Child Development Among Vulnerable Families in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Intervention effectiveness studies rarely empirically assess Theories of Change (ToC) to determine how an intervention worked. We examine the ToC underlying the Sugira Muryango (SM) parenting program in rural Rwanda to understand whether the intervention improved child development outcomes via changes in caregivers' behaviors to improve the home caregiving environment, as hypothesized. METHODS: SM uses coaching of parents to create a safe, affectionate, stimulating, and violence-free home environment. A cluster randomized trial enrolled 1049 families with young children. SM had im

The association of gestational phthalate exposure with social skills and problem behaviors in adolescents.

Phthalates are ubiquitous endocrine disrupting chemicals previously linked with behavioral problems in children. We investigated associations of gestational phthalate exposure with problem behaviors and social skills in adolescents using the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study. Parent offspring pairs (n = 216) were recruited between 2003 and 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Maternal urine samples collected at 16- and 26-weeks' gestation were analyzed for nine phthalate metabolites. At the 12-year follow-up, adolescents and caregivers completed the Social Skills Improvement Sy

The lived experiences of familial mental illness stigma among persons living with mental illnesses.

Persons with mental illnesses may experience stigma from their immediate family members in addition to other forms of stigma. The researchers used semi-structured interviews to investigate the experiences of familial mental illness stigma among 15 people diagnosed with mental illnesses in a mid-sized city in Canada. Five themes that spoke to participants' experiences of familial mental illness stigma and ways to reduce it were identified by the investigators. The themes included: diagnosis as a 'double-edged sword,' potential familial isolation, familial stigma as societal stigma localized, st

Development and Pilot Test of a Novel Digital Social Support Intervention for Reducing Hazardous Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Community-based recovery organizations (e.g., mutual-help groups) can be a potent source of social support that facilitates addiction recovery. To increase awareness of and engagement with these organizations, we developed a digital intervention called Let's Do Addiction Recovery Together! (LDART) for individuals who want to reduce their hazardous alcohol use. LDART encourages daily goal-setting, provides motivational video messages from peers, and provides information on recovery organizations. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm study to evaluate feasibility, acceptability, and p

'A labyrinth with no way out'-the conceptualization of mental distress among Arabic-speaking refugee youth: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Previous qualitative research suggests that the biopsychosocial explanatory models of mental illness are not always supported in non-Western cultures. This underscores the importance of exploring explanatory models of mental distress among hard-to-reach groups, such as refugees. The main objective of the current study was to explore what Arabic-speaking refugee youth and young adults conceptualize as their mental distress and if they experience lower functioning or if their mental distress relates to unmet needs in the daily life. METHOD: A qualitative study design was applied to

Disentangling social isolation, loneliness, and later-life cognitive function for older adults in the United States: evidence from causal inference modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults are at high risk of the negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness. One of those possible negative health impacts is Alzheimer's disease, a leading cause of death for adults in the United States and many high-income countries. Taking a life course perspective, we explore whether there is a direct causal effect of social isolation on later-life trajectories of cognitive function, the extent to which any effect of social isolation on cognitive impairment operates indirectly through loneliness, who may be most vulnerable, and the potential efficacy of a st

Animal Connections: A Scoping Review towards Enhanced Understanding of Companion Animal Interactions in Assessment of Social Connectedness in Older Adults.

Social isolation and loneliness are concerns in gerontology. The impact of the human-animal interaction (HAI) on loneliness for older adults living alone is understudied. This scoping review explored the extent to which HAI is included in studies investigating social connectedness, specifically social isolation and loneliness, and if HAI bolsters healthy aging through increased perceived support. Following the PRISMA-ScR protocol, data from 58 articles were thematically categorized, identifying (a) existing inclusion of HAI; (b) definitions and descriptions of HAI; and (c) the relationships be

Transitions in living arrangements and life satisfaction in later life: the role of race and ethnicity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transitions in living arrangements, that is, changes in cohabitation status or household composition are associated with life satisfaction in later life and whether these relationships differ by race/ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2014 to 2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; N = 8,389) were analyzed. The 2014 baseline was chosen to ensure harmonization of the study variables across waves, specifically accounting for changes in psychosocial indicators. Linear regression models assessed associations bet
