Laryngeal Cartilage Regeneration of Nude Rats by Transplantation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Previous studies transplanted human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) into thyroid cartilage defect of X-liked severe combined immunodeficiency (X-SCID) rats and confirmed transplanted cell survival and cartilage regeneration. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the contribution of iMSC transplantation to thyroid cartilage regeneration of nude rats. iMSCs were induced from hiPSCs via a neural crest cell lineage. Then, clumps formed from an iMSC/extracellular matrix complex were transplanted into thyroid cartilage defects in nude rats. The larynx w

Assessment of thyroid cartilage ossification pattern in cancer patients: A suggestion of active ossification by tumor progression.

BACKGROUND: Ossified cartilage is much more susceptible to cancer infiltration, but the reason remains unknown, and the relationship between the ossification pattern and cancer infiltration has not been studied. METHODS: The presence of thyroid cartilage ossification, cancer infiltration, ossification pattern (usual: direction from inferior to superior; unusual: other than the usual pattern), and distance between cancer and ossified cartilage were evaluated in laryngectomy specimens. RESULTS: There were 28 and 27 cases of usual and unusual patterns, respectively. There was no association bet

CT Findings in Laryngeal Trauma and the Clinical Implications.

PURPOSE: Acute traumatic osseous and cartilaginous injuries to the larynx are rare injuries presenting to the emergency department. Despite the low reported incidence, laryngeal trauma carries a high morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to identify fracture and soft tissue injury patterns in laryngeal trauma and explore associations with patient demographics, mechanisms of injury, urgent airway and surgical intervention. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with laryngeal injury who underwent multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) imaging was performed. The CT findin

Dynamic Analysis Of Male "Extra-high Voice" Using Multi-row Detector Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Some people who practice singing on a daily basis may be able to produce a voice higher than the upper limit of the normal range (extra high voice), but there is much regarding the movement of the larynx that remains unknown. We have been conducting dynamic analysis of the larynx using multi-row detection computed tomography (MD-CT) at our university and report herein an analysis of the extra high voice. STUDY DESIGN: Observational. METHODS: Images of a normal male participant capable of extremely high-frequency speech (the highest speech range is C7 [2093 Hz] and the

[New progress in diagnosis and treatment of congenital laryngomalacia in infants].

Congenital laryngomalacia is the most common disease causing laryngeal stridor in infants. The pathogenesis has not yet been clearly concluded. It may be related to abnormal development of laryngeal cartilage anatomical structure, neuromuscular dysfunction, gastroesophageal and laryngeal reflux disease, etc. The typical manifestations of the disease are inspiratory laryngeal stridor and feeding difficulties, which can be divided into mild, moderate and severe according to the severity of symptoms. The diagnosis is mainly based on clinical symptoms, signs and endoscopy, among which endoscopy is

Thyroid cartilage infiltration in advanced laryngeal cancer: prognostic implications and predictive modelling.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of laryngeal cartilage invasion is of great importance in staging of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The role of prognosticators in locally advanced laryngeal cancer are still widely debated. This study aimed to assess the impact of volume of thyroid cartilage infiltration, as well as other histopathologic variables, on patient survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 74 patients affected by pT4 LSCC and treated with total laryngectomy between 2005 and 2021 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery of the University of

Salivary Gland Adenoma in a North Island Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli).

A 7-month-old male North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) was transferred from a European zoological park to a North American private aviary. The bird appeared clinically normal upon arrival, but within 30 days, it developed clinical disease signs of sneezing, stridor, and increased respiratory effort. Upon examination a 1-mm yellow plaque was identified on the glottis. After 14 days of empiric treatment with enrofloxacin, meloxicam, and itraconazole, on repeat examination, the glottal plaque had increased in size to a 7-mm-diameter friable mass attached to the right laryngeal cartilage an

Extensive Aberrant Migration of Onchocerca lupi in a Dog.

A 13-year-old Labrador retriever mixed breed dog from Arizona was presented for evaluation of an acute onset of a head tilt as well as vocalization and head shaking upon palpation of the ears. The dog was previously treated for ocular onchocercosis associated with the right eye 10 years earlier. Ophthalmic examination at presentation revealed irregular, tan-colored, masses on the sclera of both eyes. Otoscopic evaluation of the left ear was limited because the canals were stenotic and inaccessible. Cytology did not reveal any infectious etiologies and the dog was subsequently treated with an a

De Novo Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of Thyroid Cartilage.

Myeloma involving the laryngeal cartilage is rare, whereas extramedullary plasmacytoma involving only the thyroid cartilage is even rarer. No case of de novo extramedullary plasmacytoma involving thyroid cartilage has been published so far. Hence, it was a diagnostic challenge for clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists. Here, we presented a case of a 61-year-old man who had fixed right laryngeal swelling. After 18 F-FDG PET/CT, biopsy, and myeloma workup, it was found to be plasmacytoma involving the right thyroid cartilage lamina. This case highlighted the rarity of this presentation and

The clinical spectrum of a nonsense mutation in KAT6A: a case report.

KAT6A syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability due to mutations in the lysine acetyltransferase 6A (KAT6A) gene. There are some differences in phenotype between KAT6A gene variants. This current case report describes a 1-month-old male infant that had a nonsense mutation in the KAT6A gene. Neither of his parents had the mutation. The proband had feeding difficulties and a physical examination revealed the following: moderate dysphagia, hypoplastic laryngeal cartilage, poor audio-visual response, poor head-up ability, no active grasping awarenes

A Review of Microsurgical Resection of Recurrent Laryngeal Neurilemmoma Under Nerve Monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal neurilemmoma, especially recurrent laryngeal neurilemmoma, is a rare neural sheath tumor in head and neck. The most common symptom of laryngeal neurilemmoma is hoarseness or dysphonia, followed by dysphagia, dyspnea, and foreign body sensation. At present, surgical resection is the most effective treatment for this kind of tumor, thus making how to remove it become the most concerned problem of surgeons. CASE PRESENTATION: On February 18, 2021, a 64-year-old male presented to our clinic with recurrent sore throat and intermittent hoarseness for 3 years. The results of el

18F-FDG PET/CT in Osteoradionecrosis of the Hyoid.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a well-documented complication following radiation treatment for head and neck malignancy. Facial bones, mainly the mandible, laryngeal cartilage, and skull, are frequently involved sites for ORN. A rare site for ORN is the hyoid, with very limited cases described in the literature. Recognition of the imaging pattern of hyoid ORN is critical to avoid misdiagnosis of recurrent disease, prompting early treatment.

In vivo regeneration of rat laryngeal cartilage with mesenchymal stem cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells via neural crest cells.

The laryngotracheal cartilage is a cardinal framework for the maintenance of the airway for breathing, which occasionally requires reconstruction. Because hyaline cartilage has a poor intrinsic regenerative ability, various regenerative approaches have been attempted to regenerate laryngotracheal cartilage. The use of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for cartilage regeneration has been widely investigated. However, long-term culture may limit proliferative capacity. Human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived MSCs (iMSCs) can circumvent this problem due to their unlimited proliferative

Laryngeal Osteoblastoma: Unusual Location in Arytenoid Cartilage.

Osteoblastoma is a benign bone tumor with a slow growing and local aggressive nature. This tumor type is usually localized in the cervical vertebra and rarely involves laryngeal cartilage structures. Very few osteoblastoma cases have been reported in the literature. Here we present laryngeal osteoblastoma originating from arytenoid cartilage in a patient with a history of cordectomy due to glottic squamous cell carcinoma.

Type II collagen from squid cartilage mediated myogenic IGF-I and irisin to activate the Ihh/PThrp and Wnt/β-catenin pathways to promote fracture healing in mice.

Fractures are the most common large-organ, traumatic injury in humans. The fracture healing stage includes the inflammatory stage (0-5d), cartilage callus stage (5-14d) and hard callus stage (14-21d). All mice underwent open tibial fracture surgery and were treated with saline, Glu or SCII for 21d. Calluses were harvested 5d, 10d and 21d after fracture. Compared with the model group, SCII significantly decreased TNF-α and increased aggrecan serum levels by 5d. H&E results showed that fibrous calluses were already formed in the SCII group and that chondrocytes had begun to proliferate. By 10d,

Metastatic Thyroid Cartilage Lesion from Prostatic Adenocarcinoma on 68Ga-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography Scan: Case Series.

Prostate cancer usually metastasizes to regional lymph nodes and bone. Laryngeal cartilage metastases are very rare and only few cases have been published so far describing thyroid cartilage metastatic lesions from prostate cancer. Here, we describe 5 cases of carcinoma prostate, 3 staging and 2 follow-up, where 68Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan revealed multiple skeletal lesions along with thyroid cartilage metastasis. Initially, laryngeal cartilage metastases remain asymptomatic and in later stages patients present with sym

Maxillary Sarcomatoid Carcinoma with Rhabdo-Myosarcomatous Dedifferentiation: a Clinic-Pathological Emphasis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, whether generalized or localized, presents significant challenges in arthroscopic procedures, particularly in surgeries such as ligament reconstructions and rotator cuff repairs, which depend on fixation through interference screws and/or anchors. These challenges are especially pronounced in women, the elderly, and individuals with chronic injuries. The literature discusses various techniques to mitigate these issues. OBJECTIVE: Despite the recognition of these challenges, there is no clear consensus on the most effective methods to address them. Current literature

High-Resolution Laryngeal US: Imaging Technique, Normal Anatomy, and Spectrum of Disease.

Although US is one of the most used modalities for head and neck imaging, its use in the diagnosis of laryngeal abnormalities is much less widespread. The standard assessment of laryngeal abnormalities currently involves direct laryngoscopy and cross-sectional imaging (either CT or MRI) but rarely US. US is readily available, noninvasive, and radiation free, and it allows real-time imaging (with video for dynamic assessment), higher resolution than that of cross-sectional imaging, and the performance of targeted fine needle aspiration cytology or biopsy. This modality, particularly with the ad
