Development and validation of social compensation design scale for urban older users in the context of smart-home social media.

BACKGROUND: The social compensation hypothesis posits that computer-mediated communication can offset psychosocial vulnerabilities among users who face barriers to face-to-face interaction, thereby enhancing well-being. Yet, there is no validated instrument to assess which design features of digital systems enable such compensation. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a Social Compensation Design Scale (SCDS) for urban older adults living alone, situated within smart-home social media as part of home-based, health-enabling environments. METHODS: We conducted a three-phase study from an inform

Diabetes in solitude: A mixed-methods exploration of glycemic control, emotional well-being, and practical challenges of self-management in single-living individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Living alone with type 2 diabetes poses unique challenges that may compromise self-management. This mixed-method study examined glycemic outcomes, emotional well-being, and self-care difficulties among 72 adults with type 2 diabetes in a primary care setting in Indonesia. Quantitative measures included glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose, and self-reported anxiety, loneliness, fatigue, and sleep quality, while structured surveys and open-ended questions assessed self-care challenges. Results showed high rates of loneliness (69.4%), anxiety (69.4%), fatigue (66.7%), and poor slee

Mediterranean Diet Adherence Is Associated with Lower Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety in University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study in Greece.

Background/Objectives: The Mediterranean diet (MD) constitutes one of the most broadly studied dietary patterns, which has been linked to the prevention of non-communicable diseases and mental health disorders. University students, a population exposed to significant psychosocial stressors and lifestyle changes, may particularly benefit from healthy eating patterns such as the MD. This study was designed to examine the potential associations of MD adherence with symptoms of depression and anxiety among Greek university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was initially conducted among 71

Social connections are differentially related to subjective age and physiological age acceleration amongst older adults.

Human social connections are complex ecosystems formed of structural, functional and quality components. Weak social connections are associated with adverse age-related health outcomes, but we know little about the ageing-related processes underlying this. Using data from 7047 adults aged 50+ in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, we explore associations between diverse aspects of social connections and both older subjective age and accelerated physiological age using a validated physiological ageing combining cardiovascular, respiratory, haematologic and metabolic indicators. Doubly rob

Determinants of colonoscopy adherence after positive colorectal cancer screening: Insights from individual and municipality-level data in Flanders.

BACKGROUND: Timely follow-up colonoscopy after a positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is essential for the effectiveness of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs (CRC-SP). However, a substantial proportion of individuals fail to complete diagnostic follow-up. This study aimed to identify individual- and municipality-level factors associated with nonadherence to follow-up colonoscopy in the Flemish CRC-SP. METHODS: Individual-level data from the Flemish Centre for Cancer Detection (CCD), including 26,539 individuals with a positive FIT result in 2019, were linked with publicly availab

Nationwide cross-sectional study results on long-term care and SARS-CoV-2 infection among older adults in Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study investigates determinants of self-reported SARS-CoV-2 infection, addressing a gap in understanding how social and care-related factors are associated with infection risk among older people. We analyzed the baseline wave of "Gesundheit 65+", a German nationwide population-registry survey. This wave was performed between June 2021 and April 2022, with a sample of 3450 participants aged 65 to 100 living in private households. SARS-CoV-2 infection prevalence was 3.5% (95% confidence interval, CI 2.6-4.5), slightly higher among those aged 85+, and higher among those receiving home care,

Socio-economic inequalities in unmet long-term care needs in Spain.

Europe's rapidly ageing population places increasing pressure on long-term care (LTC) systems, with inequitable access standing out as a key challenge. While socio-economic disparities in LTC utilisation are well documented, inequalities in unmet needs-the gap between required and received care-are less studied. Using the 2019 European Health Interview Survey for Spain, we categorise unmet needs as fully unmet, partially unmet, or having no unmet needs and quantify the care gap in hours. We assess socio-economic inequalities and inequities in unmet needs, stratified by eligibility for publicly

Social Disconnection in the Brain: Loneliness and Age across Networks using Graph Theory.

Loneliness, conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct of unmet social needs, has been linked to adverse health outcomes across the lifespan, prompting significant interest in its underlying neural processes. Our study aimed to address the limitations of prior neuroimaging studies of loneliness by leveraging the Lifespan Human Connectome Project Aging dataset and applying graph theory to characterize its relationship with age and resting-state brain network organization. Socio-demographic measures confirmed prior work that higher loneliness was associated with younger age, being male, unm
