Investigating the relationship between childhood interpersonal traumatic experiences and appraisals, belonging, shame, and dissociation.

Background: The association between childhood trauma and an array of psychosocial outcomes, including shame, dissociation and social connection, has attracted increasing empirical attention. Efforts are now being made to understand how these variables may be interrelated. Objective: This study aims to further expand on previous work by examining over two studies the relationship between childhood betrayal trauma, markers of belonging in social connections, shame and dissociation.Method: Both studies recruited a general population representative age and gender sample via Prolific and used path a

Timeliness of routine childhood vaccination in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: data from national vaccine surveys in 2021/2022, 2023 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: While crude vaccine coverage is a frequently reported coverage measure in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), timeliness of vaccine delivery is comparatively understudied. To achieve full vaccine benefits, both high coverage and timely delivery are required. This analysis investigated the timeliness of childhood vaccinations and associated factors across three national Vaccine Coverage Surveys conducted in 2021/2022, 2023, and 2024 in the DRC. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of vaccination coverage data from 79,761 children aged 12-23 months. Weighted coverages

Psychological determinants of pain, fatigue, and symptom burden in breast cancer survivorship.

Breast cancer survivors frequently experience persistent pain, cancer-related fatigue, and interconnected symptom clusters that impair quality of life, functional status, and treatment adherence. Psychological factors, including pain catastrophizing, anxiety, depression, fear-avoidance behaviors, and maladaptive cognitive appraisals, are associated with the amplification and maintenance of these symptoms through proposed mechanisms involving central sensitization, HPA axis dysregulation, inflammatory signaling, and behavioral deconditioning. This narrative overview, rather than a systematic re

A systematic review and meta-analysis of fear conditioning in children who have experienced childhood trauma or maltreatment.

Childhood trauma has been identified as a major risk factor for the development of fear-related disorders in adulthood. Exposure to trauma might impact fear learning and extinction processes, which in turn may increase risk for these disorders. A PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science search was conducted through May 6, 2025. Studies that used classical fear conditioning paradigms, measured indicators of fear response, examined childhood trauma or maltreatment in populations aged 18 or younger were included. Effect sizes were calculated for response to threat cues, response to safety cues, and d

High multisystem stress response is concordant with perceived arousal and predicts future depressive symptoms in the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey.

Depressive disorders increase in prevalence during adolescence and profoundly impact psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and family history of depression may increase the risk for depressive disorders through altered physiological stress response. In a sample of 508 participants without prior depressive symptoms from the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (42% female, 58% male sex-assigned-at-birth; mean age = 16.05, SD = 0.56), we investigated longitudinal relationships between ACEs, family history, psychophysiological response to a st

The Effect of Developmental Trauma on Brain Structures Involved in Threat and Memory Processing and Its Relation to Psychotic Experiences in Adulthood.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite growing evidence of a causal association between developmental trauma (DT) and psychotic experiences (PEs), the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. We examined the effect of DT on the structure of brain regions involved in threat and memory processing, and the role of these alterations in the association between DT and PEs. STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a large, population-based birth cohort in the United Kingdom. Data were available from 419 p

Altered toll-like receptor expression in autism spectrum disorder: Evidence from mRNA and serum protein analyses.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition in which immune dysregulation and neuroinflammatory processes are increasingly implicated. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), as key components of innate immunity, may represent a biological interface between peripheral immune activity and neurobehavioral manifestations; however, comprehensive investigations of the full TLR family in ASD remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate peripheral blood mRNA expression of all human TLRs (TLR1-TLR10) and corresponding serum protein levels in children and adolescents with ASD. Thirty-one drug-n

Prior Sexual Violence, PTSD Symptoms, and Recovery Trajectories After New Trauma.

IMPORTANCE: Prior work demonstrates that earlier trauma exposure increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a subsequent trauma, and cross-sectional work has also identified sexual violence (SV) as the form of traumatic stressor with the greatest conditional risk for PTSD. However, little work explores these findings longitudinally with a comparison group with no history of SV. OBJECTIVE: To examine the differences in PTSD symptoms after a new incident of trauma exposure in survivors with and without an earlier history of SV. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this c

Is There Any Level of Stress Exposure That Is Beneficial?

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to a modicum of stress-neither too much nor too little-may confer an adaptive advantage in the face of subsequent stress. This study tests whether there is a "sweet spot" of stress exposure in childhood. METHOD: The analysis uses data from the prospective, longitudinal, representative Great Smoky Mountains Study. Childhood emotional symptoms and exposure to 32 different stressful events were assessed with a structured diagnostic interview in individuals aged 9 to 16 years (6,674 total observations). Three definitions of "moderate stress" were derived based upon the type of

Childhood trauma and depressive symptoms in college students: the mediating role of fear of happiness.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma represents a significant risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms among college students; however, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the mediating role of fear of happiness in the association between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms, with a specific focus on delineating the distinct pathways linked to various trauma subtypes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a sample of 1,085 college students using validated self-report instruments: the Childhood Trauma Quest

Behavioural determinants of the use of pain-reducing interventions-a survey among professionals who vaccinate children.

UNLABELLED: Childhood vaccination is a very effective public health intervention. Fear of pain during vaccination reduces vaccine willingness and can be addressed by interventions. We aimed to identify behavioural determinants of the use of pain-reducing interventions by Preventive Child Healthcare (PCH) physicians and nurses and the associations of sociodemographic characteristics with these behavioural determinants. We invited all PCH professionals of one municipal health service (Groningen, the Netherlands; n = 180) to fill in an online questionnaire on behavioural determinants of the use o

Trauma descriptions and lived experiences: a phenomenological exploratory study among patients with severe mental illness in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: The definition of trauma used in current diagnostic and classification systems excludes culturally influenced conceptualizations of trauma, which may not involve an immediate threat to life or physical injury but a set of adversities and stressors. A culturally sensitive definition of trauma may contribute to increased identification of those at risk of developing trauma sequelae resulting in timely interventions. This formulation is particularly important for individuals living with mental disorders. The objective of this paper was to explore trauma descriptions and experiences am

The association between adverse childhood experiences and moral hypocrisy: the chain-mediated role of fear of failure and ego depletion.

To examine the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and moral hypocrisy among college students, and to elucidate the underlying psychological mechanisms, this study-guided by Ecological Systems Theory and Ego Depletion Theory-investigated the psychological processes through which ACEs may contribute to moral hypocrisy. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1,082 college students. Results indicated that: (1) ACEs positively predicted moral hypocrisy; (2) fear of failure independently mediated the ACEs-moral hypocrisy relationship; (3) ego depletion independently mediate

Primacy vs. recency effects: the dominant role of recent over past dental experience in dental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) is a prevalent problem with multifactorial origins, including past traumatic experiences, cognitive vulnerabilities, and sociodemographic factors. Since most previous studies have focused on early or cumulative dental trauma and so, the relevance and significance of the most recent dental experience in shaping DFA is less explored. This study aimed to examine how recent, past, and childhood dental experiences, along with pain-related fear and demographic variables, predict DFA severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 802 Hu

Investigating the neuroanatomical underpinnings of complex PTSD in people with psychosis.

Childhood maltreatment and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) are common among people with psychosis. Traumatic life experiences may contribute to the neural substrates of psychosis. Affective pathways to psychosis outline the role of post-traumatic sequelae, but no studies have explored the neurobiological underpinnings of cPTSD in this population. We compared two groups meeting criteria for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, with (n = 58) and without (n = 50) comorbid cPTSD. Region of interest (ROI) analysis was used to assess structural differences in ROIs identified by meta-anal
