Silent wounds: violence and adverse experiences in parents caring for terminally ill children in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Primary caregivers of paediatric palliative care patients-mostly women-are disproportionately exposed to adverse events and violence, both directly related to the experience of disease and to other stressful life events. These experiences have been associated with a higher risk of psychopathology, which in turn impacts the children under their care. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of violence among primary caregivers of palliative care patients in a children's hospital in Mexico City and to analyse how these experiences affect their caregiving capacity. Lived experiences of food-related emotional expectancies across socioeconomic groups in adults with overweight/obesity: A co-produced mixed-methods study.

Emotional eating is associated with overweight/obesity and lower socioeconomic status. Food-related emotional expectancies-the anticipated emotional outcomes of consuming different foods-are theorised to be some of the potential drivers of emotional eating, and to be amenable to modification. However, the study of food-related emotional expectancies in relation to overweight/obesity and socioeconomic status is limited, with no qualitative research. This co-produced, mixed-methods study investigated lived experiences of food-related emotional expectancies in a sample of individuals with overwei

A mixed-methods study of the development and evaluation of an Internal Family Systems (IFS)-based group intervention for post-traumatic cognitions and fear of compassion among trauma-exposed adolescents in Out-of-Home Care (OOHC).

BACKGROUND: Adolescents in Out-of-Home Care (OOHC) often suffer multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences, leading to high rates of distorted Post-Traumatic Cognitions (PTC) and Fear of Compassion (FC). Tailored, evidence-based psychological interventions are essential for this group. OBJECTIVE: This mixed-methods study aimed to design, validate, and empirically evaluate a Internal Family Systems (IFS)-based group intervention for trauma-exposed adolescents in Out-of-Home Care (OOHC). PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Fifty trauma-exposed adolescents (27 female, 23 male) were purposively selected from

Unfinished Journeys: An IPA Study of the Lived Experiences of Adult Satellite Babies.

Transnational families are becoming more common, although the long-term impact of early childhood separations from biological parents remains unclear. "Satellite babies" (SBs) are Chinese infants born in North America, sent to China for caregiving, and then reunited with their parents. This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) examined the lived experiences of 10 adult SBs to address gaps in attachment theory (AT) and inform culturally sensitive therapeutic practice. IPA's iterative, in-depth approach to thematic data analysis revealed four group experiential themes (GETs): ambiguous

"Love is Real. It Takes Many Shapes and Forms": The Concept of Love Among Children in Out-of-Home Placements.

Child abuse studies have contributed significantly to the understanding of the multidimensional dynamic between parents and their children in the context of abuse. Recently, the concept of love in this unique context has received growing attention. The current study was designed to examine the perception of love by adults who experienced parental abuse in their childhood and lived in out-of-home placements. The study comprised interviews with 15 adults who were abused by their parents in childhood and removed to out-of-home placements in Israel. Data were collected through semi-structured in-d

Scaling an equity-oriented extended home visiting programme in Sweden: costs and cross-sectoral fiscal distribution.

Inequalities in early childhood health persist across high-income countries, and structured home visiting is a principal policy response. Because such programmes are jointly produced by health and social services financed from separate budgets, the authority that pays is often not the authority that saves. We estimated the annual public-sector cost of scaling Sweden's extended home visiting programme nationally, and how it distributes between regional healthcare and municipal social services. A scenario-based costing analysis from a public-payer perspective. National registers gave an annual t

Broader autism phenotype, the default mode network, and brain entropy: A network-level hypothesis.

Despite well-documented disparities by sexual and gender minority (SGM) status in suicide attempt and mortality rates, few studies have investigated the lived experiences that contribute to SGM people's disproportionate risk of suicide. Having a history of at least one near-fatal (or medically serious) suicide attempt serves as a proxy for suicide mortality, but no known study has involved SGM people who have made such an attempt. Ideation-to-action theories of suicide posit that individuals acquire the capability for suicide through repeated exposure to painful and provocative events - namely

Black and Latino/a Participants With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Are More Likely to Be at Risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Than Their White Counterparts: A Matched Control Comparison Study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is diagnosed when a person experiences chronic psychological distress following a traumatic event that involves a real or perceived threat to life or bodily harm. Up to one-third of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients report some PTSD symptoms due to their disease (IBD-PTS); however, most data are collected in Caucasian populations. IBD-PTS is associated with poorer outcomes. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate IBD-PTS in Black and Latino/a patients. METHODS: Adult IBD patients of Black and/or Latino/a race were recru

'Don't say "fis" say "fish" ', 'I said "fis"': Ethical Considerations in Therapy to Change Child Speech.

BACKGROUND: Historically, assessment of child speech has focused on transcription and analysis of speech sound production with no exploration of the child's own perception of his or her speech. This article explores the possibility that whilst children with speech 'difficulties' may be aware that 'talking to people' is problematic, they may not be aware that the reason for their communication difficulty is that their speech is unclear. Similarly, in a therapy context, the child's own appreciation of the purpose and progress of therapy has not been explored. Given the current concern for child

IQ and subclinical psychosis: The role of psychosocial stressors and core schemata.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Previous research in both clinical and non-clinical populations has suggested an association between intelligence quotient (IQ) and psychosis. The social defeat hypothesis posits that low status and repeated humiliation increase the risk of psychosis. The present study investigated the relationship between IQ and subclinical psychosis in the general population, while also examining the potential mediating and confounding roles of psychosocial stressors and core schemata. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed data from 1497 healthy controls in the EU-GEI dataset, a multicenter s

Associations Between Early Screen Exposure and Neurocognitive Outcomes in Children Aged 2-5 Years: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Screen exposure is widespread in preschool children, but developmental associations are difficult to interpret because use varies by duration, content, and caregiving context. This review synthesized evidence on associations with language development, general cognitive performance, attention regulation, and executive functioning in typically developing children aged 2-5 years. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for peer-reviewed English-language quantitative studies published between January 2000 and December 2025. Study selection followed PRISMA 2

Early-life stress alters adult social and coping behaviors in a sex-specific and domain-dependent manner.

Early Life Stress (ELS) increases the risk for mental health issues in humans, notably in major depression and anxiety disorders. ELS is frequently modeled in laboratory rodents by disrupting the early postnatal environment. Literature on ELS is expanding, yet studies on sex-specific differences remain mixed. We utilized a novel ELS protocol that subjected mouse pups of both sexes to maternal separation and removed pup-to-pup contact comfort during postnatal days 10 to 17. We hypothesized that this ELS protocol would induce depressive and anxiety-like phenotypes persisting into adulthood, with

Emotion Dynamic During Sad Events: The Relation Among Attachment Security, Loneliness and Sadness-Related Emotional Profiles.

BackgroundCurrent theoretical models emphasize sadness as a functional and multifaceted emotion, yet research often neglects the heterogeneity of children's co-occurring emotional responses to sad events.AimThis study investigated the heterogeneity in children's emotional responses to sad events, moving beyond variable-centered approaches that assume uniform emotionality.MethodUsing a person-centered approach grounded in the core affect framework, the primary aim was to identify distinct configurations of sadness, anger, fear, and confusion in middle childhood. A secondary aim explored whether

INTRODUCTION: This article focuses on the physical and mental health of intersex people in France. They often undergo medical interventions in childhood, presented as aiming to improve their well-being. However, few studies objectively assess the overall health of intersex people in adulthood. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This self-administered questionnaire survey aims to describe the health status of intersex people and to analyze the factors contributing to its deterioration, including those related to medicalization. RESULTS: Analysis of the 155 eligible responses highlights poor physical and m

Neonatal brain structure, cognitively stimulating parenting and behavioural outcomes in preschool children with congenital heart disease and controls.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at increased risk of altered early brain development and neurodevelopmental impairments. Although environmental factors are known to influence neurodevelopmental outcomes, the interplay between neonatal brain structure and the home environment in shaping behavioural outcomes remains unclear. We investigated associations between neonatal structural covariance networks (SCNs), cognitively stimulating parenting, and behavioural outcomes at 4-6 years in 44 preschool children with CHD and 117 controls. Principal component analysis of 19 parent-report

"Doing everything we can": parents' strategies for managing chemotherapy-related symptoms in children with leukemia at home.

BACKGROUND: Children with leukemia frequently experience chemotherapy-related symptoms that persist beyond hospitalization and require ongoing management at home. Parents assume primary responsibility for symptom monitoring and management during this period; however, limited evidence exists regarding how parents experience, respond to, and manage these symptoms within home settings. This study explored parents' experiences of managing chemotherapy-related symptoms in children with leukemia at home, including symptom experiences, their impact on children and caregiving, and parents' symptom man

Neural Responses to Caregivers After Early Life Threat Experiences.

Evidence from rodent studies highlights the mother as a safety cue that regulates fear and biology. However, when infant rats are exposed to rough maternal care (i.e., threat), their brains show atypical patterns of activity in response to maternal cues. In humans, childhood adversity (i.e., international adoption, involvement with Child Protective Services) is also associated with differential neural responses to caregiver cues. However, to date, no studies have tested the hypothesis that childhood adversity characterized by threat (e.g., physical abuse, domestic violence) influences neural r

Neurocognitive correlates of psychotherapeutic treatment response in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the TECTO trial.

BACKGROUND: Atypical neurocognitive functioning is consistently reported in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while studies in childhood/early-onset OCD show smaller and more selective effects. Neurobiological models of OCD implicate aberrant activation within cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits, while related executive function (EF) alterations have been proposed as potential mechanisms underlying OCD symptomatology. However, neurocognitive correlates of treatment response in pediatric OCD have not been examined across different psychotherapeutic interventions in a
