Given the ethical limitations of exposing children to experimentally manipulated adverse experiences, evidence of the effects of childhood traumas on subsequent life history are based mostly on women's retrospective reports and animal studies. Only a few prospective studies have assessed the life-long consequences of childhood trauma. We asked whether a traumatic separation from both parents during childhood is associated with reproductive and marital traits later in life, measured by age of onset of menarche, timing of menopause, period of fertile years, age at first childbirth, birth spacing

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the quality of sibling relationships in childhood as a predictor of major depression in adulthood.
METHOD: Study subjects were 229 men selected for mental and physical health and followed from ages 20 through 50 and beyond as part of a study of adult psychosocial development. Data were obtained from interviews with participants and their parents at intake and from follow-up interviews and self-report questionnaires completed by participants at regular intervals. These data were used to rate the quality of relationships with siblings, the quality of parenting re

This study examined abuse and trauma exposure as it predicted identity problems, affect dysregulation, and relational disturbance in 620 individuals from the general population. Multivariate analyses indicated that maternal (but not paternal) emotional abuse was uniquely associated with elevations on all 7 scales of the Inventory of Altered Self-Capacities (IASC): Interpersonal Conflicts, Idealization-Disillusionment, Abandonment Concerns, Identity Impairment, Susceptibility to Influence, Affect Dysregulation, and Tension Reduction Activities. Low paternal (but not low maternal) emotional supp

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) and peer deviance (PD) both powerfully predict future externalizing behaviors. Although levels of CD and PD are strongly correlated, the causal relationship between them has remained controversial and has not been examined by a genetically informative study.
METHOD: Levels of CD and PD were assessed in 746 adult male-male twin pairs at personal interview for ages 8-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years using a life history calendar. Model fitting was performed using the Mx program.
RESULTS: The best-fit model indicated an active developmental relationship between CD and

Study objectives were to develop a treatment manual for a family-focused intervention for depressed school-aged children, evaluate its feasibility and acceptability, and complete an initial open trial to examine treatment effects. Nine young people meeting criteria for depression (major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, or depression not otherwise specified), completed a 12-week family intervention, and were assessed immediately and at 9 months following treatment completion. The intervention presented an interpersonal model of how depressive symptoms are maintained, and emphasized deve

A growing body of research implicates genetic factors and childhood trauma in the etiology of neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia. However, there remains little understanding of how genetic variation influences early life stress to affect later disease susceptibility. Studies in rats have shown that postnatal maternal separation (MS) results in later deficits in prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response (PPI), an impairment in sensorimotor gating found in schizophrenic patients. In the present study, genetic differences in the effects of repeated MS on PPI were examined

This review presents supporting evidence that early disruptions in mother-infant relationship in primates, including infant maltreatment, are important risk factors for the development of psychopathology and pathophysiology during childhood and adolescence. Current research in this field is trying to identify important aspects of early adverse experiences such as the timing, frequency, duration, "perceived" intensity of the stressful or traumatic events, the role of social support (e.g., nurturing caregiver) in buffering the deleterious outcomes of early adversity, as well as the role of sex a

The malleability of insecure and disorganized attachment among infants from maltreating families was investigated through a randomized preventive intervention trial. Findings from research on the effects of maltreatment on infant attachment were incorporated into the design and evaluation of the intervention. One-year-old infants from maltreating families (N = 137) and their mothers were randomly assigned to one of three intervention conditions: (a) infant-parent psychotherapy (IPP), (b) psychoeducational parenting intervention (PPI), and (c) community standard (CS) controls. BACKGROUND: Associations between the polymorphism of apolipoprotein E, which plays an important role in cholesterol metabolism and cholesterol gallstone formation, have been reported recently. Patients with the apo E4 isoform showed increased numbers and cholesterol contents of their stones, a higher frequency of cholesterol crystals in bile, increased susceptibility to gallstone fragmentation by extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy and an increase in recurrence rate after dissolution. A recent study, however, showed that fast cholesterol crystallization in bile is associated with multiple st

BACKGROUND: Using a lifecourse approach, this study examines whether childhood adversities act on adult health as latent or pathway effects, and whether not only childhood ill health and material deprivation, but also an adverse psychosocial environment in terms of stressful relations with parents contribute to later ill health.
METHODS: Lifecourse interviews with 380 men born in 1946 were conducted. Outcome variables were perceived health, number of medical conditions, and activity limitations. Ordinal scales indicating levels of exposures as regards childhood health/growth, childhood materi

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are common and there is evidence to suggest that the origins of such problems lie in infancy and childhood. In particular, there is evidence from a range of studies to suggest that maternal psychosocial health can have a significant effect on the mother-infant relationship, and that this in turn can have consequences for both the short and long-term psychological health of the child. The use of parenting programmes is increasing in the UK and elsewhere and evidence of their effectiveness in improving outcomes for children has been provided. Evidence is now re

Inequality in wealth has been well-documented, but its causes remain uncertain. Family processes in childhood are likely to shape adults' wealth accumulation, but these factors have attracted little attention. I argue that family size matters: children from larger families accumulate less wealth than do those from smaller families. Siblings dilute parents' finite financial resources and nonmaterial resources, such as time. This diminishment of resources reduces educational attainment, inter vivos transfers, and inheritance. Reduced educational attainment and transfers alter financial behavior;

This study reports on the relation of 4 patterns of responsive parenting across early childhood (birth-4 1.2 years) with children's rate of cognitive and social development through 8 years of age for a cohort of children born preterm and of very low birthweight and term. Consistent responsiveness across early childhood predicted faster rates of cognitive and social growth than did inconsistent or minimal responsiveness, particularly for preterm children. As parenting at 6 and 8 years did not alter this relation, results suggest that parenting across early childhood plays a unique role in child

Much research on the experiences of parents of children with cancer has been conducted within a discourse of psycho-pathology, or has tended to see parents mostly as a proxy source of information on the well-being of their children. Using empirical data from semi-structured interviews with 20 mothers of a child with cancer, in one area of the UK, we draw on sociological literatures on motherhood, childhood, caring, and chronic illness to suggest a more helpful and informative way of understanding their experiences. We suggest that mothers, although not ill themselves, experience many of the co

The "tween years" are often challenging for both the children experiencing this period of development and their families. Adding to this challenge could be the stress of a chronic illness. This compounded dilemma can alter the achievement of normal developmental milestones and disrupt quality of life. This article addresses the special challenges of children with chronic illness during the tween years and proposes a conceptual framework based on a stress/coping paradigm relating chronic illness, coping resources for adaptation, and quality of life for research and practice.

Epidemiologic studies indicate that children exposed to early adverse experiences are at increased risk for the development of depression, anxiety disorders, or both. Persistent sensitization of central nervous system (CNS) circuits as a consequence of early life stress, which are integrally involved in the regulation of stress and emotion, may represent the underlying biological substrate of an increased vulnerability to subsequent stress as well as to the development of depression and anxiety. A number of preclinical studies suggest that early life stress induces long-lived hyper(re)activity

This article has attempted to establish the importance of considering behavioral disturbances in infancy and early childhood as disturbances of the parent-child relationship. When the psychologic and mental mechanisms of the individual infant are too immature to sustain disturbed behavior across several settings and when the behavioral disturbance seems to be specific to a particular relationship, it is more appropriate to diagnose the pathology as being in the relationship. The article has offered a diagnostic framework of relationship pathology that spans the spectrum from normal variation (

Pediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children. Consequences of feeding disorders can be severe, including growth failure, susceptibility to chronic illness, and even death. Feeding disorders occur in children who are healthy, who have gastrointestinal disorders, and in those with special needs. Most feeding disorders have underlying organic causes. However, overwhelming evidence indicates that abnormal feeding patterns are not solely due to organic impairment.
