The Effect of Developmental Trauma on Brain Structures Involved in Threat and Memory Processing and Its Relation to Psychotic Experiences in Adulthood.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite growing evidence of a causal association between developmental trauma (DT) and psychotic experiences (PEs), the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. We examined the effect of DT on the structure of brain regions involved in threat and memory processing, and the role of these alterations in the association between DT and PEs. STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a large, population-based birth cohort in the United Kingdom. Data were available from 419 p

Behavioural determinants of the use of pain-reducing interventions-a survey among professionals who vaccinate children.

UNLABELLED: Childhood vaccination is a very effective public health intervention. Fear of pain during vaccination reduces vaccine willingness and can be addressed by interventions. We aimed to identify behavioural determinants of the use of pain-reducing interventions by Preventive Child Healthcare (PCH) physicians and nurses and the associations of sociodemographic characteristics with these behavioural determinants. We invited all PCH professionals of one municipal health service (Groningen, the Netherlands; n = 180) to fill in an online questionnaire on behavioural determinants of the use o

Trauma descriptions and lived experiences: a phenomenological exploratory study among patients with severe mental illness in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: The definition of trauma used in current diagnostic and classification systems excludes culturally influenced conceptualizations of trauma, which may not involve an immediate threat to life or physical injury but a set of adversities and stressors. A culturally sensitive definition of trauma may contribute to increased identification of those at risk of developing trauma sequelae resulting in timely interventions. This formulation is particularly important for individuals living with mental disorders. The objective of this paper was to explore trauma descriptions and experiences am

The Experience of Alienation in Children and Adolescents With Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

INTRODUCTION: A cancer diagnosis during childhood and adolescence, together with intensive treatment, imposes significant psychosocial challenges. Alienation is a key yet underexplored component of this experience and may adversely affect physical well-being, mental health, and social adjustment. This review aimed to systematically synthesize qualitative evidence on alienation experienced by children and adolescents with cancer. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE (Ovid), the Cochrane Library (Wiley), and CINAHL (EBSCO) from inception to 28 May

Living beyond cancer in childhood and adolescence: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on the lived experiences of childhood and adolescent cancer survivors (CACSs), focusing on both challenges and positive transformations after treatment. METHODS: A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Nineteen qualitative studies published between 2015 and 2025 were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Data were analyzed through thematic and content analysis to generate descriptive and analytical themes. RESULTS: Five overarching themes and 21 sub-themes were identified.

The association between adverse childhood experiences and moral hypocrisy: the chain-mediated role of fear of failure and ego depletion.

To examine the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and moral hypocrisy among college students, and to elucidate the underlying psychological mechanisms, this study-guided by Ecological Systems Theory and Ego Depletion Theory-investigated the psychological processes through which ACEs may contribute to moral hypocrisy. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1,082 college students. Results indicated that: (1) ACEs positively predicted moral hypocrisy; (2) fear of failure independently mediated the ACEs-moral hypocrisy relationship; (3) ego depletion independently mediate

Primacy vs. recency effects: the dominant role of recent over past dental experience in dental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) is a prevalent problem with multifactorial origins, including past traumatic experiences, cognitive vulnerabilities, and sociodemographic factors. Since most previous studies have focused on early or cumulative dental trauma and so, the relevance and significance of the most recent dental experience in shaping DFA is less explored. This study aimed to examine how recent, past, and childhood dental experiences, along with pain-related fear and demographic variables, predict DFA severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 802 Hu

Investigating the neuroanatomical underpinnings of complex PTSD in people with psychosis.

Childhood maltreatment and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) are common among people with psychosis. Traumatic life experiences may contribute to the neural substrates of psychosis. Affective pathways to psychosis outline the role of post-traumatic sequelae, but no studies have explored the neurobiological underpinnings of cPTSD in this population. We compared two groups meeting criteria for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, with (n = 58) and without (n = 50) comorbid cPTSD. Region of interest (ROI) analysis was used to assess structural differences in ROIs identified by meta-anal

What interests children about sexuality?: exploring narratives and questions from primary school children in Spain.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, international organisations have advocated for comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in school curricula, emphasising its role in equipping children with knowledge, skills, and values for informed, healthy, and respectful decisions about sexuality. Despite this, CSE programmes often focus on adolescence, adopting a preventive approach centred on risks like HIV and unintended pregnancies, while neglecting topics such as pleasure, gender diversity, and decision-making. This study explores the interests and questions of primary school children (aged 9-11) in Spain

It's never too early to enjoy math (or not): The emergence of children's emotions toward math in the preschool years.

Acquiring mathematical competence is a complex process that begins in early childhood, long before formal schooling. Even though emotional experiences associated with mathematical activities are theorized to influence motivation, engagement and learning outcomes, research on the emergence of math-related emotions in preschool-aged children remains scarce. The present study investigates whether children aged 4-to-5 years already manifest differentiated emotional responses toward math and how these emotions relate to their self-concept and actual math abilities. A total of 384 Italian preschoole

Parental help-seeking for sleep in children aged 0-5 years: A systematic review.

Healthy sleep is vital for children's development, immune function, and emotional health. However, many young children (0-5 years) experience sleep problems, and parental help-seeking behaviours are critical for timely intervention. This systematic review synthesised evidence on whether parents seek help for child sleep, where they seek help, and factors influencing help-seeking behaviours. A systematic search of CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, and PsycINFO was conducted. Eligible studies included original research addressing parental help-seeking for child sleep, involving caregivers of children aged

Conceptualising trauma in eating disorders: a reflexive commentary on the role of neglect, iatrogenic harm, and epistemic injury.

While links between eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder are well established, dominant frameworks have tended to locate trauma primarily outside healthcare, offering limited tools for understanding how neglect, exclusion, coercive practices, and epistemic misrecognition within care may contribute to ongoing distress. Drawing on empirical research, ethical scholarship, and reflexive lived experience analysis, this Comment paper examines how trauma-related symptoms in eating disorders may arise not only from early life adversity, but also through harmful relationships with health

Resilience in the face of adversity: Adverse and benevolent childhood experiences in irritable bowel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) report higher levels of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). However, little is known about protective factors. This study aims to investigate whether Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCE), such as favorable resources and relationships during childhood, can mitigate the risk of IBS associated with ACE. METHODS: Participants were recruited nationwide through an online survey panel. This cross-sectional study included individuals who self-reported a doctor's diagnosis of IBS. All participants completed the Adverse Childhood Experience Que

Understanding developmental transitions of fear learning circuits: Insights from behavioral neuroscience.

Childhood is a period of peak developmental plasticity, involving drastic changes in the maturation of the neural circuitry underlying fear learning. Disruption and atypical development of fear learning are candidate mechanisms underlying child psychopathology. While there is a lack of understanding behind the maturation of fear learning systems in humans, rodent studies in this area delineate the normative development of fear learning systems early in life, and the effects of early threatening and fearful experiences on this developmental trajectory. Here, we review the rodent literature on d

From childhood psychological maltreatment to fear of happiness: the parallel mediating roles of self-concept clarity and executive function.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common belief that every human being pursues happiness, current evidence challenges this belief with the concept of fear of happiness. Growing literature has examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and fear of happiness, but has not yet provided sufficient evidence on how this relationship occurs. Therefore, the present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining the mediating roles of self-concept clarity and executive function deficits in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment (CPM) and fear of happines

Neural alterations in Pavlovian reversal learning link childhood trauma and transdiagnostic anxiety in youth.

BACKGROUND: Pavlovian reversal learning (RL) is a potential pathway linking childhood trauma (CT) with psychopathology. RL describes the ability to flexibly update associations of stimuli with threat and safety based on changing contextual significance. This study aims to characterize how CT may alter the neural underpinnings of RL in youth in ways relevant to mental health. METHODS: One hundred participants aged 9-19, half with CT (i.e., interpersonal violence) exposure, completed a RL task during an fMRI scan. One previously-neutral stimulus was paired with an aversive stimulus and predicte
