INTRODUCTION: Newborn screening (NBS) for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) was added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) in 2016 to enable early diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to understand the experiences of parents/caregivers of children with X-ALD to improve the NBS process and referral to appropriate clinicians.
METHODS: Parents/caregivers were recruited through NBS coordinators and genetic counselors in 6 states. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom. Two coders independently coded transcripts using MAXQDA software, and thematic analysis was con

BACKGROUND: Standard urotherapy for childhood incontinence involves traditional tools like paper bladder diaries, timer watches, wetting alarms, and uroflowmeters. However, little is known about how these tools are experienced by today's digitally native children.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how children undergoing urotherapy perceive and experience these commonly used tools, with the goal of informing more engaging and child-centered design approaches.
METHODS: A qualitative focus group design was used with purposive sampling of children undergoing in-clinic urotherapy group trai

Young adults with childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are an especially vulnerable group to suicide. Suicide encompasses different phases, but for CSA survivors the salient factors precipitating suicide are rarely studied. In this study, from a progressive perspective of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), we aim to identify distinct risk factors for predicting different stages of STB, i.e., suicidal ideation (SI), suicide plan (SP), and suicide attempt (SA), among young adults with CSA experience. Based on mental health profiles of 4,070 young adult CSA survivors from a cross-sectional survey, we

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may contribute to dental fear, which can negatively affect long-term oral health. We aimed to examine associations between specific and cumulative ACEs and dental fear in adolescents, investigate possible sex differences, and explore the potential mediating role of dental fear in the relationship between ACEs and caries experience.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5882 Norwegian adolescents aged 13-17 years from the Young-HUNT4 Survey in Norway. Self-reported ACEs (i.e., physical and sexual abuse, witnessing violence, parental divor

Our Hungarian cross-sectional study highlights the crucial mediating role that adult attachment styles play in the relationship between early traumas and suicidal behaviour, shaping how individuals process and respond to traumatic experiences. Early traumas, such as abuse or neglect, often disrupt the development of secure attachment, leading to insecure styles in adulthood-such as anxious or avoidant attachment. These insecure attachment styles influence emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and coping mechanisms, thereby exacerbating feelings of isolation and despair. For instan

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a severe mental health concern, particularly among the youth with experiences of childhood trauma (CT) and school bullying (SB).
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the cumulative and specific effects of CT and SB on NSSI, and to investigate associations between NSSI-related factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 96,218 students from 63 colleges in Jilin Province, China, used assessments for CT, SB, and NSSI. The entropy-balancing (EB) approach was applied to achieve covariate balance between NSSI and non-NSSI groups. We quantifi

Theoretical models suggest that childhood abuse erodes embodied sense of self (ESS), a multidimensional entity that encompasses both subjective embodied experience and narrative identity. However, no studies have evaluated the impacts of childhood abuse types on the minimal and narrative selves simultaneously or examined the role of this integrated sense of self in the relationship of childhood abuse to psychopathology. The present cross-sectional study investigated ESS as a mediator from childhood emotional abuse (CEA), childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and childhood physical abuse (CPA) to fear

Paternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been recently linked to offspring's brain development. Yet, none of the previous studies in humans have explored the association between paternal ACEs and a child's attentional bias for facial expressions of emotion. Our study fills this gap. Data were collected from 239 fathers (mean age 32.15; SD 5.04) and their children at 8 months of age who were part of the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. Paternal ACEs were evaluated using the Trauma and Distress Scale (TADS) in five domains: emotional and physical neglect, emotional and physical abuse, and

BACKGROUND: Childhood functional constipation, a common concern within child healthcare, necessitates oral and rectal medical treatments, that are mostly administered by parents in the home environment. It is important to gather children's perspectives in child- and family-centred care. The private nature of toileting, bowel movements, and faecal incontinence are areas of taboo and stigmatisation. Research is scarce on how children perceive this common but private situation of oral and rectal constipation treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To explore children's experiences of functional constipation and i

BACKGROUND: Many childhood cancer survivors (CCS) experience cancer-related worries (CRW), for example about late effects and cancer recurrence. CRW are associated with lower quality of life (QoL) and maladaptive health care use. We examined the prevalence, severity, and factors associated with CRW in adult CCS.
METHODS: We included quantitative studies of ≥ 100 participants reporting on prevalence, severity, mean scores and/or associated factors of CRW among CCS aged ≥ 18 years, diagnosed at ≤ 21 years, and ≥ 2 years post-diagnosis. We searched MEDLINE/PubMed and APA PsycINFO, hand-searched

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the leading cause of childhood mortality, with respiratory distress syndrome as the predominant aetiology. Initiating continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) immediately after birth may reduce CPAP failure, the need for ventilation, and surfactant use. In low-resource settings, without ventilation or surfactant, immediate CPAP could significantly reduce preterm mortality. We explored the experiences, perceptions, and acceptability of immediate CPAP among parents, caregivers, and healthcare workers in a Ugandan hospital.
METHODS: This qualitative study (April 2

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic inflammatory condition often marked by pain in childhood. JIA pain has a variable course and often lacks any visible signs. As such, youth with JIA can experience negative judgement from others in response to their pain (i.e., pain-related stigma). Theoretical models indicate that pain-related stigma experiences contribute to affective, behavioural, and cognitive reactions from youth in the moment (i.e., situational) and over time (i.e., enduring) that ultimately influence their health. Caregivers also play a crucial role in supporti

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare, childhood inflammatory disease and its management can be challenging and confronting for both clinicians and caregivers. Little is known about the perspectives of parental caregivers of children with JDM. This study aimed to describe the experiences of parents of children with JDM to inform person-centred care.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (face-to-face, telephone) were conducted with parents of children with JDM from three centres in Australia. Transcripts were analysed thematically.
RESULTS: Nineteen parents (15 mothers) of 17 ch

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is of increased prevalence in adolescents. Threat experiences early in life including childhood abuse and bullying victimization, are considered precursors of non-suicidal self-injury, however, the underlying mechanism remains underexplored. Therefore, the present study sought to investigate the relation between threat experiences and adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury, and the mediating role of negative cognitive processing bias and moderating role of vagal regulation in this link. BACKGROUND: Social anxiety has become a common psychological problem that seriously affects the mental health of contemporary youth. Although numerous studies have shown that childhood trauma is closely related to social anxiety in adulthood, the mediating role of evaluation of fear in this relationship remains unclear. This study aims to explore the relationships among childhood trauma, evaluation fear, and social anxiety among college students and their internal pathways.
METHODS: In September 2023, a sample of 559 Chinese university students aged 18-22 years (mean age = 20.20, SD = 1.211;

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder that is characterized by altered perceptions of self-image, affect, and behavioral difficulties, especially a fear of being abandoned or rejected. Individuals with BPD engage in impulsive behaviors such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, self-harm, excessive spending, or binge eating. Beyond the individual level, BPD has a damaging effect on the integrity and safety of societies. Subjects with borderline personality disorder have various types of traumatic childhood experiences and social exclusion.

Survivors of childhood abuse are at greater risk for a wide range of health disorders in adulthood, which is posited to occur in part through alterations to threat-related processes such as fear learning. Neighborhood characteristics such as area disadvantage and exposure to neighborhood crime are associated with threat processing in trauma-exposed individuals; however, their relationship with fear learning has not been studied to date. This study assessed relationships between three measures of neighborhood safety (neighborhood disadvantage, crime exposure, and self-reported neighborhood safe

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) involves fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance, impacting quality of life. Early life adversities (ELA) are recognized as risk factors for SAD. Previous research indicated inconsistent alterations in resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) in SAD, particularly in the prefrontal cortex and precuneus. This study investigated the interaction between SAD and ELA at the RSFC level. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted on 120 participants (aged 19-48). Four groups were formed: low/ high ELA controls (n = 49, n = 22) and low/ high EL
