Stress and psychologic and environmental factors in functional dyspepsia.

Patients with functional dyspepsia are a heterogeneous group in whom psychologic and environmental factors and stress may contribute to their reports of symptoms. There is no unique personality profile in patients with functional dyspepsia. Although they have more anxiety, neuroticism, and depression than healthy subjects, their personality scores are no different than other patients with chronic abdominal pain syndromes, be they organic or functional in nature. Social factors including older age, male gender, unmarried status, and social incongruity are associated with increased frequency and

Adult vulnerability for psychiatric disorders: interactive effects of negative childhood experiences and recent stress.

The effects of negative childhood experiences on adult psychiatric status remain unclear because of inconsistent findings in previous studies. In this study, we examine the extent to which parental separation/divorce before the age of 10, parental death before the age of 10, and self-reports of parental mental illness during early childhood interact with recent stressful life events to increase the probability of multiple psychiatric disorders and psychiatric symptoms during adulthood. Data are from a stratified random sample of 3801 adults residing in a five-county catchment area in North Car

Bones for the future.

In the course of the present century the major metabolic bone problem in the West of Scotland and Northern Europe in general has changed from that of rickets/osteomalacia with its attendant deformity and loss of stature, to osteoporosis and a consequent epidemic of fractures in older people. Advances in understanding the intermediary metabolism of vitamin D have resulted in a better appreciation of the role of air pollution in the rickets pandemic during the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th century, but the persistence of the problem in Asian immigrants and in certain special

Auditory event-related potentials in well-characterized groups of children.

Sixty-eight subjects ranging in age from 6 to 23 years were studied in an 'auditory oddball' event-related potential (ERP) paradigm. Our results replicate other studies, finding P3 as the most consistent component of ERPs since childhood, although great variability of this component was found in the 6-year-old group. Separate age/ERP component latency and amplitude linear regressions were computed for subjects 6-14 and 6-23 years old. Our data show in both groups a significant negative and positive correlation between age and P3 latency and N1-P2 amplitude respectively. The age/P3 latency slop

Life events and depressive disorder reviewed. I. Events as predisposing factors.

I reviewed studies examining the hypothesis that life events that occur during childhood or early adolescence may predispose a person to a depression in adulthood. Of studies that compared the incidence of childhood bereavement or other childhood loss events among depressed patients and controls, the majority found an increased incidence among the depressives. Although discrepant negative findings exist, it seems that the childhood loss of a parent by death generally increases depressive risk by a factor of about 2 or 3. In addition, early loss events also seem to be related to the severity of
