Early adversity and prosocial behavior in adolescents from Bogotá: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The association between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), prosocial behavior, and depression (like other negative mental health outcomes) has not been thoroughly understood. This study aimed at evaluating their simultaneous association while controlling for key confounding variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried-out with 2918 secondary school students from seven charter schools located in low-resourced neighborhoods in Bogota (Colombia), 54.12% were female, and mean age was 13.81 years. The self-report instrument included demographic variables, well-being, ment

Sex-Specific Effects of Early Life Unpredictability on Hippocampal and Amygdala Responses to Novelty in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Unpredictable childhood experiences are an understudied form of early life adversity that impacts neurodevelopment in a sex-specific manner. The neurobiological processes by which exposure to early-life unpredictability impacts development and vulnerability to psychopathology remain poorly understood. The present study investigates the sex-specific consequences of early-life unpredictability on the limbic network, focusing on the hippocampus and the amygdala. METHODS: Participants included 150 youth (54% female). Early life unpredictability was assessed using the Questionnaire of

Complex emotion processing and early life adversity in the Healthy Brain Network sample.

OBJECTIVE: Early life adversity (ELA) has shown to have negative impacts on mental health. One possible mechanism is through alterations in neural emotion processing. We sought to characterize how multiple indices of ELA were related to naturalistic neural socio-emotional processing. METHOD: In 521 5-15-year-old participants from the Healthy Brain Network Biobank, we identified scenes that elicited activation of the Default Mode Network (DMN), Ventral Attention Network (VAN), Cingulo-Opercular Network (CON) and amygdala, all of which are networks shown to be associated with ELA. We used linea

Adverse childhood experiences, subsequent negative life events, and their impact on health in occupational rehabilitation patients: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are prevalent globally and can negatively impact an individual's lifespan by not only increasing the likelihood of encountering other negative life events (NLEs), but also escalating the risk of illness, absenteeism due to sickness, unemployment, and reliance on disability benefits in adulthood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of ACEs and NLEs, as well as their health impacts among patients undergoing occupational rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 participants diagnosed with musculoskele

The Continuity of Adversity: Negative Emotionality Links Early Life Adversity With Adult Stressful Life Events.

Adversity that exhibits continuity across the life course has long-term detrimental effects on physical and mental health. Using 920 participants from the Dunedin Study, we tested the following hypotheses: (1) children (ages 3-15) who experienced adversity would also tend to experience adversity in adulthood (ages 32-45), and (2) interim personality traits in young adulthood (ages 18-26) would help account for this longitudinal association. Children who experienced more adversity tended to also experience more stressful life events as adults, β=.11, 95% CI [.04, .18], p=.002. Negative emotiona

Reported Suicide Attempts among Adolescents in Uganda: Differences by HIV Status.

Suicide remains a global public health concern and is a leading cause of death among adolescents. Adolescents with perinatally-acquired HIV (PHIV) are particularly vulnerable to suicide and other challenges, including discrimination, stigma, educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviors, and medical complications. In Uganda, adolescents with PHIV experience a high burden of mental health problems, but there is scant information regarding suicide attempts. This study examined lifetime suicide attempts, depressive symptoms, and adverse experiences among adolescents with PHIV and demographicall

The moderating effect of recent positive and negative life events on the impact of early life stress on mental wellbeing and distress.

Early life stress (ELS) significantly influences mental health in later stages of life. Yet it is unclear whether recent life events lessen or intensify the effects of ELS on present wellbeing and distress. We addressed this question in 1064 healthy community adults with a normative range of wellbeing and distress. We tested whether recent daily life events (DLE), occurring in the 12 months prior to assessment, moderated the association between effects of past ELS on present wellbeing and distress. Principal components analysis was first used on both ELS and DLE to determine the event types lo

A cross-cultural examination of adverse childhood experiences in low-and middle-income countries and their relation with adolescent educational aspirations.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur before the age of 18. Researchers have examined the negative associations between adversity and adolescent and adult outcomes, such as education and physical health. However, research on ACEs, and their association with other outcomes in non-western contexts is sparse. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to increase our understanding of the prevalence of ACEs - and their association with educational aspirations - in low- and middle-income country contexts. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We utilize data from

Metacognition as a Mediator for Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Following Childhood Stressful Life Events: An Examination of the Construct Validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire-Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Both cognitive and metacognitive theories implicate posttraumatic metacognition as an important factor in the maintenance of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following stressful life events (SLEs). The Metacognitions Questionnaire-posttraumatic stress disorder (MCQ-PTSD; Wells, 2009) was previously developed to assess for metacognitions specific to SLEs and resulting PTSS. This study aimed to examine the construct validity of this measure in the context of childhood SLEs specifically. First, we confirmed the factor structure underlying the MCQ-PTSD in our sample. We then assessed whether t

Treatments for intractable constipation in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Constipation that is prolonged and does not resolve with conventional therapeutic measures is called intractable constipation. The treatment of intractable constipation is challenging, involving pharmacological or non-pharmacological therapies, as well as surgical approaches. Unresolved constipation can negatively impact quality of life, with additional implications for health systems. Consequently, there is an urgent need to identify treatments that are efficacious and safe. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatments used for intractable constipation in childre

[Characteristics of narcolepsy in childhood].

Narcolepsy is a rare disorder with brief daytime sleep periods, transient loss of muscle tone in emotional situations (cataplexy), dream mentation during short periods of sleep (hypnagog hallucinations), and transient inability to move on waking (sleep paralysis), affecting only 2–3000 people in Hungary. Despite its characteristic symptoms, it is difficult to recognise the disease and there is often a delay of decades before a correct diagnosis and hence effective therapy. Cases with a childhood onset require special attention, as the classic complaints mentioned above are accompanied by a num

Childhood Predictors of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Adolescence: A Birth Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is rare in childhood but becomes prevalent in adolescence, which suggests that early intervention might be indicated. As childhood predictors of NSSI in adolescence are largely unknown, identifying these predictors was the aim of this study. METHOD: In a birth cohort sample (n = 759) of Norwegian children, NSSI at 12, 14, or 16 years of age was regressed on predictors of NSSI at age 6 (parental factors: depression, parenting stress, negativity/hostility, emotional availability to the child; child factors: temperamental negative affectivity, emotion re

Complex Intersections Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Negative Life Events Impact the Phenome of Major Depression.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative life events (NLEs) are associated with major depression (MDD). PURPOSE: To determine whether ACEs affect all features of mild MDD, including suicidal tendencies, brooding, neuroticism, insomnia, cognitive deficits, severity of depression and anxiety, and cognitive deficits, and whether NLEs mediate these effects. SAMPLE OF THE STUDY AND METHODS: This study examines a cohort of 118 academic students, namely 74 students who satisfied the DSM-5-TR criteria for MDD and 44 normal control students. We assessed bro

The association of adverse childhood experiences with long-term outcomes of psychosis: a 21-year prospective cohort study after a first episode of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests a possible relationship between exposure to childhood adversity (CA) and functional impairment in psychosis. However, the impact of CA on long-term outcomes of psychotic disorders remains poorly understood. METHODS: Two hundred and forty-three patients were assessed at their first episode of psychosis for CA and re-assessed after a mean of 21 years of follow-up for several outcome domains, including symptoms, functioning, quality of life, cognitive performance, neurological dysfunction, and comorbidity. The unique predictive ability of CA exposure for outcomes wa

Placebo response in patients with Dravet syndrome: Post-hoc analysis of two clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: Dravet syndrome is a rare, early childhood-onset epileptic and developmental encephalopathy. Responses to placebo in clinical trials for epilepsy therapies range widely, but factors influencing placebo response remain poorly understood. This study explored placebo response and its effects on safety, efficacy, and quality of life outcomes in patients with Dravet syndrome. METHODS: We performed exploratory post-hoc analyses of pooled data from placebo-treated patients from the GWPCARE 1B and GWPCARE 2 randomized controlled phase III trials, comparing cannabidiol and matched placebo i

Adverse childhood experiences and recent negative events are associated with activated immune and growth factor pathways, the phenome of first episode major depression and suicidal behaviors.

This research assessed the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative life events (NLEs) on forty-eight cytokines/chemokines/growth factors, in 71 FE-MDMD patients and forty heathy controls. ACEs are highly significantly associated with the classical M1 macrophage, T helper (Th)-1, Th-1 polarization, IRS, and neurotoxicity immune profiles, and not with the alternative M2, and Th-2 immune profiles. There are highly significant correlations between ACEs and NLEs and different cytokines/chemokines/growth factors, especially with interleukin (IL)-16, CCL27, stem cell growth facto

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Poor Sleep Quality in Older Adults: The Influence of Emotion Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with sleep impairment across the life span, but little is known about modifiable factors that may ameliorate this relationship, such as adaptive emotion regulation (ER) skills. METHODS: Data were obtained from an online questionnaire completed by a community sample of older adults (N = 278). The questionnaire included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, an Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), and measures of health conditions, and other sample demographics. Moderation

Resilient phenotypes among bereaved youth: a comparison of trajectory, relative, and cross-domain approaches.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is a common traumatic event associated with adverse health outcomes across the life course. Despite these risks, not all bereaved individuals experience these negative effects. Limited scientific consensus exists on how to define resilience in individuals who have experienced the death of a loved one. METHODS: Using a sample of N = 3766 youth from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children birth cohort, we identified bereavement of a family member between ages 7 and 8.5. We derived and compared three different approaches to assess resilience among bereaved you

Cumulative stressful events and mental health in young adults after 10 years of Wenchuan earthquake: the role of social support.

ABSTRACTBackground: After a natural disaster, stressful events often continue to accumulate, affecting individuals in a different manner than the original disaster never occurred. However, few studies have examined these associations, the cumulative impacts of stressful events on mental health outcomes, and the role of social support. This study examined the prospective association between cumulative stressful events and mental health problems and the role of social support in young adults. Methods: 695 participants provided available data on earthquake exposure, childhood maltreatment, other n
