Health-related quality of life in people with psychotic disorders: The role of loneliness and its contributors.

BACKGROUND: Perception of loneliness has been identified as the strongest predictor of health-related quality of life assessed with the Assessment of Quality of Life-4D in people with psychotic disorders. We aimed to establish contributors to perceived loneliness, and ascertain the mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between identified contributors to loneliness and other known predictors of health-related quality of life with health-related quality of life. METHODS: Data for 1642 people collected as part of the 2010 Australian National Survey of Psychosis were analysed. Health-r

Proposing network analysis for early life adversity: An application on life event data.

Commonly used methods for modelling early life adversity (e.g., sum-scores, latent class or trajectory approaches, single-adversity approaches, and factor-analytical approaches) have not been able to capture the complex nature of early life adversity. We propose network analysis as an alternative way of modelling early life adversity (ELA). Our aim was to construct a network of fourteen adverse events (AEs) that occurred before the age of 16 in the TRacking Adolescents Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS, N = 1029). To show how network analysis can provide insight into why AEs are associated, we c

Association between stressful life events and grey matter volume in the medial prefrontal cortex: A 2-year longitudinal study.

Stressful life events (SLEs) in adulthood are a risk factor for various disorders such as depression, cancer or infections. Part of this risk is mediated through pathways altering brain physiology and structure. There is a lack of longitudinal studies examining associations between SLEs and brain structural changes. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging data of 212 healthy subjects were acquired at baseline and after 2 years. Voxel-based morphometry was used to identify associations between SLEs using the Life Events Questionnaire and grey matter volume (GMV) changes during the

Describing Callous Unemotional Traits and Stressful Life Event Trajectories: Differences on Risk Factors and Mental Health Outcomes from the Age of 3 to 10.

Callous Unemotional (CU) traits are associated with different environmental risk factors, such as negative stressful life events (SLE). The most common studied SLE associated with CU trait has been childhood maltreatment, but less is known about how other SLE impact the development of CU traits. Therefore, this work examines risk factors, personal factors (executive functioning), and mental health outcomes associated with the trajectories of Callous Unemotional (CU) traits and Stressful Life Events (SLE) in a community sample of children. A cohort of 377 preschoolers were followed up between a

Early-life trauma, negative and positive life events, compulsive sexual behavior disorder and risky sexual action tendencies among young women with substance use disorder.

Although significant advances have been made in the field to date, gender-based issues for women remain a neglected area in much of substance abuse research. In the current study we examined two gaps in the literature: the co-occurrence of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and risky sexual action tendencies among women with substance use disorders (SUDs), and their shared antecedents in the form of early life adversity and negative life events. The sample comprised 132 women of whom 62 had substance use disorder (drug and alcohol) and 70 were healthy controls. Each participant complet

Associations between depressive symptoms, socio-economic factors, traumatic exposure and recent intimate partner violence experiences among women in Zimbabwe: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Population-based research on the cumulative effects of socio-economic conditions and trauma exposures, particularly women's experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) on their mental health in Zimbabwe, has been limited. AIM: Our study aimed to determine the associations between depressive symptoms and socio-economic factors, IPV, and traumatic exposures among a nationally representative sample of women from Zimbabwe. METHODS: Data was collected from 2905 women who volunteered to participate in a survey that had a multi-stage random sampling design. Depression was measured us

Using phenome-wide association studies and the SF-12 quality of life metric to identify profound consequences of adverse childhood experiences on adult mental and physical health in a Northern Nevadan population.

In this research, we examine and identify the implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on a range of health outcomes, with particular focus on a number of mental health disorders. Many previous studies observed that traumatic childhood events are linked to long-term adult diseases using the standard Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire. The study cohort was derived from the Healthy Nevada Project, a volunteer-based population health study in which each adult participant is invited to take a retrospective questionnaire that includes the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnai

Positive and negative life experiences and changes in internal working models of attachment - a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: One of the most important questions in personality psychology and psychopathology is whether working models of attachment change during lifetime. It is assumed that early childhood experiences influence the formation of secure or insecure internal working models of attachment The belief that attachment representations formed in childhood are relatively stable is no longer so obvious: new reports have appeared, according to which important life experiences may lead to a change in attachment style from insecure to secure or the other way around. The main aim of the present project wa

Pace of aging, family environment and cognitive skills in children and adolescents.

Pace of aging is an epigenetic clock which captures the speed at which someone is biologically aging compared to the chronological-age peers. We here use data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) to investigate the interrelation between the study children's parental social class at birth, and their pace of aging and cognitive skills measures in childhood and adolescence. We show that children from lower parental social classes display faster pace of aging and that the social class gradient in pace of aging is strongest in adolescence. About one third of this associ

Trajectories of stressful life events and long-term changes in mental health outcomes, moderated by family functioning? the TRAILS study.

PURPOSE: We assessed the association between trajectories of stressful life events (SLEs) throughout adolescence and changes in mental health from childhood to young adulthood. Further, we assessed whether family functioning moderated this association. METHODS: Data of the first six waves of the TRAILS study (2001-2016; n = 2229) were used, a cohort followed from approximately age 11 to 23. We measured SLEs (death of a family member or other beloved one, delinquency, moving, victim of violence, parental divorce, and sexual harassment) at ages 14, 16 and 19. Family functioning was measured at

Entwined life events: The effect of parental incarceration timing on children's academic achievement.

Parental incarceration has negative effects on children's educational outcomes. Past studies have only analyzed, and therefore only treated as consequential, parental incarceration that occurs during childhood rather than prenatally. Such analyses that emphasize the importance only of events that occur during one's lifetime are common in life course studies. This paper introduces an "entwined life events" perspective, which argues that certain events are so consequential to multiple persons' lives that they should be analyzed as events within multiple independent life courses; parental incarce

The United States index of socioeconomic deprivation for individuals (USiDep).

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sleep health are well-known to be sex- and race-specific. To build on the established relationship between sleep duration and CVD risk, this cross-sectional study aimed to describe sex-specific associations between CVD risk and other sleep characteristics (sleep quality, sleep timing and sleep onset latency) in low-income adults of African descent. METHODS: Self-reported sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI], Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS], Insomnia Severity Index [ISI]), demographic and lifestyle data were collected in 412

Parental Separation and Semen Quality in Young Men: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Parental separation may be a stressful life event with the potential to influence hormonal regulation of offspring reproductive health and thereby affect semen quality in young men. We aimed to study the association between parental separation in pregnancy or in childhood and semen quality in young men and to study whether the timing of parental separation in childhood was important. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a follow-up study of 1058 young men born 1998-2000 from the Fetal Programming of Semen Quality (FEPOS) cohort nested within the Danish National Birth Cohort. Internalizing and externalizing pathways to high-risk substance use and geographic location in Australian adolescents.

One specific instantiation of the storm-and-stress view of adolescence is the idea that "normal" adolescence involves high-risk substance use behaviors. However, although uptake of some substance use behaviors is more common during adolescence than other life stages, it is clear that not all adolescents engage in risky substance use-and among those who do, there is much variation in emotional, behavioral, and contextual precursors of this behavior. One such set of predictors forms the internalizing pathway to substance use disorder, whereby internalizing symptoms in childhood such as negative

Preclinical animal models of mental illnesses to translate findings from the bench to the bedside: Molecular brain mechanisms and peripheral biomarkers associated to early life stress or immune challenges.

Animal models are useful preclinical tools for studying the pathogenesis of mental disorders and the effectiveness of their treatment. While it is not possible to mimic all symptoms occurring in humans, it is however possible to investigate the behavioral, physiological and neuroanatomical alterations relevant for these complex disorders in controlled conditions and in genetically homogeneous populations. Stressful and infection-related exposures represent the most employed environmental risk factors able to trigger or to unmask a psychopathological phenotype in animals. Indeed, when occurring

Biomarkers for risk-based treatment modifications for CNS germ cell tumors: Updates on biological underpinnings, clinical trials, and future directions.

CNS germ cell tumors (GCTs) preferentially occur in pediatric and adolescent patients. GCTs are located predominantly in the neurohypophysis and the pineal gland. Histopathologically, GCTs are broadly classified into germinomas and non-germinomatous GCTs (NGGCTs). In general, germinoma responds well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with a 10-year overall survival (OS) rate of approximately 90%. In contrast, NGGCTs have a less favorable prognosis, with a five-year OS of approximately 70%. Germinomas are typically treated with platinum-based chemotherapy and whole-ventricular radiation the

Compassion fatigue, presenteeism, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), and resiliency levels of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students.

BACKGROUND: Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students often experience challenges that can cause poor academic performance and attrition. Known threats to nurses' professional quality of life and patient care include compassion fatigue and presenteeism; it is not known how these phenomena carry over from prior nursing experience to DNP students' academic experiences and subsequent NP practice. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can also threaten nursing students' coping ability and overall wellbeing. Building resilience can combat the negative effects related to professional quality of life

A Life Course Study on Traumatic Brain Injury and Physical and Emotional Trauma in Foster Children.

Foster children are exposed to high levels of abuse, violence, and other adverse events throughout their childhood and adolescent years. Forms of brain injury, notably traumatic brain injury (TBI), are understudied in the foster child population. This study aimed to explore different forms of brain injury and their cognitive, behavioral, and psychological/emotional effects on current and former foster children using a life course perspective. A thematic analysis with a life course perspective was used to examine semi-structured, open-ended interviews conducted with current and previous foster
