OBJECTIVE: Due to the disproportionate impact of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) among African American young adults, the authors explored (1) number of historically black college and university (HBCU) campuses with existing HIV prevention policies and services and (2) perceived barriers for implementing HIV prevention services.
METHODS: Semistructured telephone surveys were conducted with health administrators from 25 HBCUs.
RESULTS: Twenty-four of 25 (96%) health administrators responded. Twelve of 24 administrators (50%) reported having no formal

This study examines disparities in health status, health care utilization, insurance coverage and satisfaction in US low-income parents of infants and toddlers with disabilities compared to low-income parents of children without disabilities. The Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project is a longitudinal study involving 2087 families in 17 communities across the United States. Families completed interviews at enrollment and at 7, 16, and 28 months after enrollment. Descriptive analyses were conducted to characterize children's status in terms of health, health care use, and insurance c

BACKGROUND: Excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure can cause skin cancers, skin photoageing and cataracts. Children are targeted by sun-protection campaigns because high sun exposure and sunburn in childhood increase the risk of melanoma in adulthood. Little information is available about UV radiation risk and exposure in children who take part in outdoor sports.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of developing UV radiation-induced skin lesions run by children who practise outdoor sports, and UV radiation exposure and sun-protection measures during a soccer tournament.
METHODS: Firstly,

OBJECTIVE: In a rural area of the US state of Texas, in April 2008, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) responded to evidence of widespread child abuse in an isolated religious compound by removing 463 individuals into state custody. This mass child protection intervention is the largest such action that has ever occurred in the United States. The objective of this paper is to characterize the burdens placed on the area's community resources, healthcare providers, and legal system, the limitations encountered by the forensic and public health professionals, and how th

The prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) is a complex challenge in heavily affected and resource-limited settings such as South Africa. Management of PMTCT requires a cascade of interventions that need to be addressed to effectively decrease the risk of HIV transmission to infants. This PMTCT cascade includes incremental components that can be shaped and influenced by the patient-provider relationship. The relationship that a pregnant woman has with her care providers may possibly affect decisions that she makes concerning her antenatal care and may, in turn, influence the qu

Using Census and administrative data for 2052 Census tracts in a large urban county, this study explores the relationship between several indicators of social organization and neighborhood rates of child maltreatment for 0- to 5-year-olds. Spatial regression models demonstrate that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of 3- and 4-year-olds attending preschool or nursery school, both locally and in adjacent neighborhoods, had lower rates of early maltreatment referrals and substantiations. Neighborhoods with more licensed child care spaces relative to child care need, as defined by the number

OBJECTIVE: the aim of two related studies was an in-depth knowledge of psychosocially and health-related vulnerable families and the 'portfolio' of care that family midwives (FM) provide. Besides factors which influence acceptance and access from the mothers' perspective, the effectiveness of FM with regard to care, infant nutrition, and parent-child relationship as well as multidisciplinary collaboration were of interest, especially against the backdrop of Germany's national aim to strengthen prevention of neglect and abuse of infants. In addition, the reasons why families did not want FM car

The authors review the literature on resilience following childhood maltreatment and describe how variation in the measurement of outcomes at various developmental stages affects research findings, practice implications, and policy recommendations. Although the 21 studies reviewed considered competent functioning in similar domains as evidence of resilience following maltreatment, few provided prevalence estimates for specific indicators or across domains of functioning. Using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), the authors explored different ways of operationalizin

Problems in the delivery of antituberculosis care to the pediatric population of Moscow are analyzed. Databases are set up by the statutory forms available in the city's tuberculosis dispensaries and by additional analytical tables from pediatric therapeutic-and-prophylactic institutions, such as children's local polyclinics. In Moscow, there was a reduction in the vaccination coverage of healthy neonatal infants at their discharge from maternity hospitals and departments over a number of years (88.0% in 2008 and 90.3% in 2005). The proportion of non-vaccinated neonates due to their parents' r

OBJECTIVES: Parents of children who visit the pediatric emergency department (PED) for asthma exacerbations may have inadequate knowledge of preventive asthma care. The primary objective of this study was to assess knowledge and use of preventive asthma care measures among parents of children with asthma who present to the PED with asthma exacerbations. The secondary objective was to identify variables that predict adherence to four key preventive care measures.
METHODS: The authors administered a 38-item questionnaire to 229 parents of children ages 2 to 18 years with asthma exacerbations wh

BACKGROUND: Home environmental exposures may aggravate asthma. Few population-based studies have investigated the relationship between asthma control in children and home environmental exposures.
OBJECTIVE: Identify home environmental exposures associated with poor control of asthma among asthmatic children less than 12 years of age in Montreal (Quebec, Canada).
METHODS: This cross-sectional population-based study used data from a respiratory health survey of Montreal children aged 6 months to 12 years conducted in 2006 (n = 7980). Asthma control was assessed (n = 980) using an adaptation of

The 13th Children and Youth Report of the Federal Government was tasked with assessing the achievements attained in health-related prevention and health promotion by the Child and Youth Services and evaluating the goals still to be accomplished. Health-relevant development issues in the first phase of life are attachment and autonomy. The concept of early intervention is defined by the threefold responsibility entrusted to the Child and Youth Services: encouraging opportunities for development, providing assistance where resources are inadequate, and protecting children who are endangered or n

This article addresses some of the contemporary issues in relation to providing palliative care for children in Ireland, particularly focusing on the creation of the specialist palliative care nursing outreach posts. The recent publication of an Irish national policy on palliative care for children with life-limiting illness is welcome news for paediatric nurses in Ireland. Children are valued members of society and have a right to receive quality health care and support appropriate to meet both children and the families' precise needs. However, community services for children with life-limiti

Swaziland's prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programme is linked to maternal and newborn health (MNH) services, but is mainly focussed on HIV/AIDS. Existing MNH services are inadequate, especially postnatal care (PNC) of mothers and babies, with delayed postnatal visits occurring at 4-6 weeks after delivery. Fifty-seven percent of staff in seven Swazi health facilities were trained in promoting and providing early PNC. A final evaluation showed a 20-fold increase in the number of visits coming for an early postnatal visit (within the first three days after birth). A direct ob

The purpose of this study was to (a) explore the relationship between the lack of everyday routines and children's unintentional injuries, (b) examine two mechanisms of effect through which lack of routines might operate, children's sleep and maternal supervision, and (c) explore the influence of maternal fatigue in routines and maternal supervision. The sample comprised 264 mothers and their 3-year-old children. Routines were not directly related to children's injuries, but they moderated the relationship between maternal supervision and injuries. Lack of supervision was positively related to

BACKGROUND: In the pediatric setting, adverse events occurring at the administration stage are the most common type of preventable adverse drug events. Few data are available on the effect of advice from medical professionals on medication safety.
METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of 1685 pediatric patients, 6 office practices in the Boston area. Data were collected from parental interviews, review of duplicate prescriptions, and chart review. Incidents were stratified by type (medication error, near miss, or preventable adverse drug event) and stage of the medication process. Descr
