Terrorism, distress, and drinking: vulnerability and protective factors.

Research has demonstrated effects of 9/11 on distress and drinking outcomes in individuals directly affected and indirectly affected across the United States. Fewer studies have addressed vulnerability and protective factors shown to moderate the effects of stress exposure. We report findings from a Midwestern workplace cohort study. Respondents to a 6 wave longitudinal mail survey completed questionnaires prior to September 11, 2001 and again in 2003 and 2005. Regression analyses encompassed measures of terrorism-related beliefs and fears, workplace stressors (sexual harassment, generalized a

The nature of parental supervisory neglect.

The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether different types of supervision problems such as leaving a child alone and leaving a child with an inadequate caregiver have different correlates and consequences for children. A case-comparison design was used to compare four types of supervision problems. Data were extracted from child protective services investigative reports. The results showed that each type of supervision problem had a distinct set of characteristics. Recommendations for assessing and treating different types of supervision problems are addressed.

Dietary intake and parents' perception of mealtime behaviors in preschool-age children with autism spectrum disorder and in typically developing children.

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently report that their children have selective eating behaviors and refuse many foods, which could result in inadequate nutrient intake. This preliminary cross-sectional descriptive study investigated dietary intake and parents' reported perception of food behaviors of 20 3- to 5-year-old children with ASD. Twenty typically developing children matched for sex, age, and ethnicity were also studied as a case-control comparison. Nutrient intake determined from 3-day food records was adjusted for day-to-day variation to determine the es

Inter-rater reliability of Glamorgan Paediatric Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale.

UNLABELLED: Children who are at risk of pressure ulcers need to be identified so that preventative measures can be taken. Most paediatric pressure ulcer risk assessment scales were developed using clinical experience, or by modifying adult scales. The Glamorgan Paediatric Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale was developed using detailed paediatric inpatient data. AIM: To establish whether the inter-rater reliability of the Glamorgan scale was adequate for use in clinical practice. METHOD: Fifteen qualified nurses randomly selected from staff working on seven paediatric wards or units in a la

Perinatal outcomes among foreign-born and US-born Chinese Americans, 1995-2000.

This paper examines nativity differences in adverse perinatal outcomes of Chinese-American mothers. Singleton live births to US-resident Chinese women (150,620 foreign-born, 15,040 US-born) and a random sample of 150,620 non-Hispanic White mothers were selected from 1995 to 2000 national linked birth/infant death certificate files. Associations between maternal nativity status and adverse perinatal outcomes were assessed using multivariable logistic regressions. Compared to US-born Chinese mothers, foreign-born Chinese mothers were less likely to be unmarried, teen mothers, have a non-Hispanic

Characteristics of adolescents with type 1 diabetes who exhibit adverse outcomes.

PURPOSE: This study seeks to determine differences in key characteristics between adolescents with type 1 diabetes who experience the adverse outcomes of poor glycemic control, hypoglycemic events, and hospitalizations due to their disease versus those who do not experience such events. A secondary purpose is to examine differences in outcomes for adolescents using insulin pumps versus daily insulin injections (>or=2). METHODS: Data from 108 adolescents were divided according to glycemic control (HbA1c <8% vs >or=8%), hypoglycemic reactions and hospitalizations in the past year (0 vs >or=1 ep

[Psychology of everyday hygiene].

The present publication discusses the following hypotheses: 1) With a continual increase in the state of scientific knowledge and the hygienic risk factors (infectious diseases, multi-resistant pathogens, age structure of the population with increasing risk of infection, etc.) a hygiene behaviour with increasing deficits develops. 2) Essential hygiene behaviour is blocked by irrational psychological defensive strategies: (a) hygiene biases (childhood illnesses as stabilisers for health development; hygiene as a health risk; overrating chemical-physical environmental risks as e.g. triggers for

Preconception exposures to potential germ-cell mutagens.

Radiation and other agents can cause germ-cell mutations in animal systems. No human germ-cell mutagen has been identified, but this does not mean that human germ-cells are not vulnerable to mutagenesis. There has been particular concern about the possible health effects on offspring following parental preconception exposure to ionizing radiation-both occupational and therapeutic. A strong association with preconception radiation exposure in the fathers of the cases was found in a case-control study of young people with leukaemia living near the Sellafield nuclear plant in the UK. Subsequent s

Strategies to avoid the loss of developmental potential in more than 200 million children in the developing world.

This paper is the third in the Child Development Series. The first paper showed that more than 200 million children under 5 years of age in developing countries do not reach their developmental potential. The second paper identified four well-documented risks: stunting, iodine deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia, and inadequate cognitive stimulation, plus four potential risks based on epidemiological evidence: maternal depression, violence exposure, environmental contamination, and malaria. This paper assesses strategies to promote child development and to prevent or ameliorate the loss of dev

A state-wide review of hospital postnatal care in Victoria, Australia: the views and experiences of midwives.

OBJECTIVE: to describe midwives' views and experiences of the provision and organisation of hospital-based postnatal care. DESIGN: semi-structured interviews with key informants who provide hospital-based postnatal care. SETTING: public hospitals in Victoria, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: clinical midwives and midwifery managers (n=33). FINDINGS: midwives remain positive about working in hospital-based postnatal care; however, their satisfaction is influenced by barriers to effective care beyond their control, which specifically limit the time available to spend with women. They described many

Perioperative patient safety: correct patient, correct surgery, correct side--a multifaceted, cross-organizational, interventional study.

BACKGROUND: It is important to ensure a patient-safe environment in the perioperative setting. With this in mind, a "patient-safety first" philosophy was adopted within our operating room service. METHODS: During the first phase of the interventional study (2001-2002), we defined and executed the organizational and educational aspects of the intervention. Thereafter, the implementation phase (2003-2005) was performed. According to our zero tolerance policy, in the event that a major error in patient readiness for anesthesia and surgery was found in the operating room holding area, the patient

The implications of US experiences with early childhood interventions for the UK Sure Start Programme.

BACKGROUND: The UK Government introduced a large-scale early childhood intervention programme, Sure Start, in 1999. Sure Start is to be further expanded, to achieve national coverage. US experience is highly relevant for anticipating challenges that this expansion will raise. METHODS: This is a focused, narrative review. We examine the impact, funding, quality-improvement and programme objectives of Head Start and Early Head Start programmes. RESULTS: (1) Early childhood interventions can make a significant difference to children's life chances; (2) expansion without adequate funding threate

[Do German nutrition interventions for children and adolescents meet quality criteria for program planning and evaluation? - Results of a survey of institutions at state and regional levels].

PURPOSE: The international literature describes comprehensive nutrition interventions for children and adolescents, and gives recommendations for successful program planning. For Germany, only few studies on these issues are available, and there is a particular scarcity of data on implementation, acceptance and effectiveness of nutrition interventions. Thus the aim of this study was to record nutrition interventions at state and regional levels in Germany, and to assess their project design and evaluation quality. On the basis of these data, conclusions about implementation, acceptance and eff

Social networks, informal child care, and inadequate supervision by mothers.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether less informal child care support from family and friends is related to supervisory neglect and, if there is a relationship, to test several explanations for why some mothers receive less child care. Thirty-two low-income mothers who did not adequately supervise their children were matched to 32 mothers who provided adequate supervision. The results showed the mothers who provided inadequate supervision received less child care support from their partners and relatives, but not their friends. These differences appear to be linked to several prop

Asthma care and management before an emergency department visit in children in western Michigan: how well does care adhere to guidelines?

OBJECTIVES: Asthma is one of the more common reasons for children's visits to the emergency departments (EDs). Many studies show that the level of asthma care and self-management in children before an ED visit for asthma is often inadequate; however, most of these studies have been conducted in the inner cities of large urban areas. Our objectives were to describe asthma care and management in children treated for asthma in 3 EDs located in an urban, suburban, or rural setting. METHODS: We studied a prospective patient cohort consisting of children aged 2 to 17 years who presented with an acu
