Parenting behaviors and deviant peer affiliation among Chinese adolescents: the mediating role of psychological reactance and the moderating role of gender.

Given the negative impact of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent behavioral development, understanding its underlying mechanisms is essential. Drawing on social development model, psychological reactance theory and adolescent-limited delinquency theory, this study examined the relationship between parenting behaviors and adolescents' deviant peer affiliation, as well as the mediating role of reactance and the moderating role of gender. The research involved 1,822 high school students (Mage = 15.28 years, SDage = 2.40) from two provinces in China. All students completed a face-to-face questi

Mediating roles of psychological entitlement and presence of meaning in the associations between parental measures (rejection and overprotection) and adolescent internet addiction.

BACKGROUND: Although internet addiction has been related to negative parenting, few studies have investigated relationships involving parental rejection and parental overprotection and adolescent internet addiction. The present study examined the role of psychological entitlement and the presence of meaning in mediating relationships between parental rejection and overprotection and adolescent internet addiction. METHODS: Self-reported data were drawn from a cross-sectional study involving a large-scale sample of 4091 secondary vocational schools students (45.9 % girls; Mage = 16.77 years, SD

Longitudinal Linkages between Parental Overprotection and Children's Anxiety: Disentangling the Between-Family and Within-Family Effects.

Although reciprocal associations between changes in parental overprotection and children's anxiety are theoretically expected, there is a lack of empirical evidence on these linkages that tap into both between-family differences and within-family effects. This longitudinal multi-informant study examined reciprocal associations between parental overprotection and children's anxiety at the between- and within-family level, as well as explored whether these linkages differed by informant, parental role, and children's gender. A total of 471 children (55.2% for boys, Mage at T1 = 9.73, SD = 0.57),

Parental overprotection moderates the association between recent stressor exposure and anxiety during the transition to university.

The first year of university is a developmentally significant transition that involves substantial stressor exposure and, for some, heightened anxiety. Parenting may influence the association between stressor exposure and anxiety symptoms, with some research showing that parental care and overprotection throughout childhood and adolescence are associated with the experience of anxiety. However, how these factors interact and relate to anxiety symptoms in early adulthood is not clear. To address this issue, we examined interactions between parenting characteristics (care and overprotection) and

Childhood maltreatment and parenting style moderate the mediation of resilience in the continuity of anxious and depressive symptoms in Chinese children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies suggest that resilience may play as a significant mediator in the continuity of depressive and anxious symptoms in youth, however, longitudinal evidence is lacking. Besides, whether childhood maltreatment (CM) and parenting styles significantly moderate this mediation of resilience has not been discussed before. METHODS: This population-based longitudinal study included 5218 participants from the Mental Health Survey for Children and Adolescents in Yunnan (MHSCAY), with a baseline survey (T1) and 2 rounds of follow-up (T2 and T3). Univariate and multivariate logis

"I No Longer Felt Sick, I Always Felt Free": Growing Up With Congenital Heart Disease and the Struggle for a Good Life-An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Advancements in surgical, interventional, and intensive-care medicine have significantly increased the life expectancy of individuals born with congenital heart disease (CHD). As a result, growing numbers of affected children now reach adulthood. Despite medical progress, CHD remains a lifelong condition that influences how individuals perceive and shape their lives. This qualitative study explored ideas of a good life among 14 young adults aged 18-29 years living with CHD. Data were gathered through semi-structured phenomenological interviews and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological

Bridging parental rejection and overprotection: implications of their co-occurrence for family-based interventions in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Parenting plays a crucial role in the development and management of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Understanding how different parenting style dimensions interact can inform family-based interventions. This study aimed to investigate the associations between parental overprotection, rejection, and emotional warmth in parents of children diagnosed with ADHD and to compare these associations between mothers and fathers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 31 families of children aged 7 to 9 years diagnosed with ADHD. Children comp

Psychobiological stress outcomes in mothers, fathers, and children after successful assisted reproduction.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Breaking the cycle of infertility through assisted reproductive technology (ART) can be burdensome for couples, potentially impacting the family. Our study investigated long-term effects of infertility and ART stress on families by comparing families formed through ART with those formed through natural conception (NC). DESIGN/METHODS: Two-child families (children aged 1-14), with the first-born conceived through ART (ART-1; n = 47), the second-born conceived through ART (ART-2; n = 19), or both children conceived naturally (NC; n = 52), were assessed. Parents completed questi

Predictors of Coping in Adolescence: The Influence of Temperament and Parenting Styles.

Coping strategies are essential for adolescents' socio-emotional well-being and academic success. This study aims to explore the predictive role of temperament traits, parental care, and overprotection in shaping adolescents' coping strategies. A cross-sectional design was employed to collect data from 1,195 Italian adolescents aged 14-18 years. Stepwise regression analyses were conducted to identify significant predictors of coping strategies. Findings revealed that temperament traits, particularly depressive and cyclothymic temperaments, were the strongest predictors of coping strategies. Hi

A Narrative Review of the Co-Occurrence and Interaction of Childhood Emotional Neglect and Overprotection in Developmental Pathways to Disordered Eating.

Childhood emotional neglect and parental overprotection are two subtle yet influential caregiving patterns that shape emotional, relational, and self-regulatory development. Though they are often examined separately, emerging research suggests that they may act independently and together to increase vulnerability to disordered eating. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary theoretical and empirical contributions to clarify how emotional neglect and overprotection affect pathways related to emotion regulation, attachment processes, and self-concept development. The review introduces the

The Mediating Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Relationship Between Parental Overprotection and Offspring's Physical Health in Adulthood.

Parental overprotection before adulthood can have enduring consequences for offspring, yet the mechanisms underlying its association with adult physical health are not fully understood. This study proposes trait emotional intelligence (trait-EI) as a pivotal mediating factor in this relationship. A sample of 459 university students (mean age = 22.42 years, SD = 1.43; 50.3% female, 49.7% male) completed measures assessing their recalled parental overprotection, trait-EI and physical health. Results from regression and mediation analyses revealed that parental overprotection was significantly ne

The impact of parental overprotection on the emotions and behaviors of pediatric hematologic cancer patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Parental overprotection may have an impact on children's emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs). As pediatric hematologic cancer patients have compromised immune systems, parents of such children often worry excessively, interfering with their daily lives. Therefore, avoiding overprotection is crucial for the overall physical and mental health of pediatric hematologic cancer patients. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the current status of EBPs in pediatric hematologic cancer patients and analyze their associated risk factors. DESIGN: This work was a multicenter cross-

Parental care and overprotection predict worry and anxiety symptoms in emerging adult students.

Anxiety disorders represent a prevalent mental health concern, with escalating rates, especially among emerging adults. University students, in particular, face a myriad of academic and life stressors that can amplify feelings of worry and anxiety. While early parental bonding seem to predict anxiety disorders later in life, the applicability to emerging adult students and its applicability to predict sub-clinical and transdiagnostic anxiety features remain unclear. This study aims to examine i) the relationship between demographic variables and key features of anxiety disorders (i.e., worry a

Effects of Inappropriate Nurturing Experiences, Depressive Rumination, and Trait Anxiety on Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that inappropriate childhood nurturing experiences (low care and high overprotection), trait anxiety, and depressive rumination are risk factors for depression. However, no studies to date have analyzed the overall association between these factors and depressive symptoms. In the present study, we hypothesized that depressive rumination mediates the impacts of inappropriate childhood nurturing experiences on depressive symptoms, and that these mediating effects are moderated by trait anxiety, and tested these hypotheses in adult volunteers. METHODS: The su
