Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) measurement tools among children and adolescents in the Arab world: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) significantly impact long-term health, yet culturally adapted measurement tools for Arab children and adolescents remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review systematically mapped ACEs assessment tools used in the Arab world, identifying key instruments and gaps. METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines, six databases were searched (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science) up to August 31st, 2025, including English and Arabic studies from 22 Arab countries. RESULTS: Of 19,714 screened records, 96 met inclus

Child maltreatment and its association with incident irritable bowel syndrome: genetic risk and mediation pathways in the UK biobank.

BACKGROUND: The associations and mediation pathways between child maltreatment and incident irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) remain unclear. METHODS: We carried out the Cox proportional hazard models to explore the associations of child maltreatment and its five subtypes with hazard ratios (HRs) of IBS, and mediation analyses were conducted to assess the roles of obesity, lifestyles, and mental disorders in such associations among participants with different genetic susceptibilities. RESULTS: Participants who reported two or more subtypes of child maltreatment exhibited the greatest risk of IB

When Empathy Helps and Hurts: Non-Linear Associations Between Early Childhood Maltreatment History, Empathy and Self-Harm Thoughts.

Child maltreatment is a well-established risk factor for self-harm, yet the affective processes underlying this association remain unclear. This study examines how empathy relates to the association between early childhood maltreatment and lifetime self-harm thoughts. Data from 303 adults were stratified based on the presence or absence of maltreatment history in early childhood. Self-reports of lifetime self-harm thoughts in adulthood and empathy during adolescence were examined in both groups using generalized additive models to assess non-linear relationships. Adults with early childhood ma

Evaluating digital mental health interventions for Middle East and North Africa children and adolescents affected by armed conflict: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region experience high rates of psychological distress due to armed conflict and displacement, with limited access to traditional mental health care. This has led to increased interest in digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) as a potential solution. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of DMHIs in reducing PTSD, anxiety, and depression symptoms, as well as improving overall wellbeing in MENA children and adolescents affected by armed conflict. It also explores barriers and facilitat

Psychometric evaluation of the Perceived Parental Phubbing Scale (PPPS) among Iranian university students: associations with psychosocial factors and group differences.

BACKGROUND: Parental phubbing, the experience of children perceiving parental inattentiveness due to smartphone use, can signal emotional unavailability, perceived rejection, and model maladaptive behaviors. Theoretically, Risky Families Model highlights how emotionally unavailable parenting disrupts children's emotional and social development, PAR theory explains children's psychological responses to perceived parental neglect, and Social Learning Theory describes how children may adopt parents' smartphone habits. Despite these theoretical foundations, most research has been conducted in Chin

Childhood psychological maltreatment, depressive symptoms, and death obsession in older adults: exploring the moderating effect of meaning in life.

OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated a moderated mediation model in which depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and death obsession, with meaning in life moderating both components of the indirect pathway. METHOD: The sample for the present study consisted of 904 older adults (50.2% women), aged between 65 and 91 years (Mage= 71.23, SD = 5.72), residing in an urban region of Türkiye. Self-report measures assessing childhood psychological maltreatment, depressive symptoms, death obsession, and meaning in life were administered. Data we

The Effect of Emotional Self-Regulation Counseling on Anxiety and Fear of Childbirth in First-Time Pregnant Women: A Clinical Trial Study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related anxiety and fear of childbirth are common in primiparous women and contribute to high cesarean section rates. Few interventions specifically target emotion regulation skills. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a brief, midwife-led, group-based counseling program grounded in Gross's emotion regulation model in reducing pregnancy-related anxiety and fear of childbirth. METHODS: Pragmatic randomized controlled trial in Hamadan, Iran, 2023. Seventy primiparous women (28-33 weeks gestation) were allocated (1:1) to 6 weekly emotion regulation counseling sessions o

Can adolescent hope buffer against the adverse effects of youth and parent cultural stress on Latinx youths' adjustment outcomes?

Latinx youth and their parents can experience cultural stress-a constellation of interrelated stressors Latinx youth and parents experience based on racism, xenophobia, and the navigation of bicultural contexts. Notably, cultural stress Latinx youth and parents experience can compromise the emotional (i.e., depressive symptoms and self-esteem) and behavioral (i.e., aggressive behavior, alcohol and tobacco use) well-being of youth. However, not all Latinx youth are adversely affected by cultural stress they or their parents experience, suggesting the presence of protective resiliency processes.

Ethical Considerations for Researchers' Well-Being in the Development Process of Virtual Reality Scenarios for Child Emotional Maltreatment.

This paper aims to reflect on ethical considerations for the well-being of researchers involved in the development of virtual reality (VR) scenarios for parents who emotionally maltreat their children. Ethical considerations, particularly potential emotional strain, arose throughout the VR scenario development, including topic selection and content creation. However, despite the significance of these issues, existing literature addressing ethical challenges in researching sensitive topics from the researcher’s perspective has focused solely on data collection or analysis, overlooking the well-

Childhood Maltreatment as Risk Markers for Intimate Partner Sexual Violence: A Meta-Analysis.

Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a devastating yet often overlooked form of violence around the world. Using social learning theory to guide our study, we examined childhood maltreatment risk factors for IPSV victimization and perpetration among men and women. We searched several databases (PsychInfo, Proquest, Sociological Abstracts, Social Service Abstracts, ERIC, and Proquest Dissertation and Theses) to obtain studies for this meta-analysis. Studies were included in the current meta-analysis if they adhered to the following criteria: (a) examined IPSV exclusively, not combined wit

Empathy and mentalization as mediators between childhood maltreatment and social decision-making during adulthood.

Childhood maltreatment is a highly prevalent form of early adversity with long-lasting consequences for social and emotional functioning. While previous work has established links between maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, little is known about how these processes shape adult social decision-making. In this study, 327 adults completed validated self-report measures of childhood maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, along with a series of economic games designed to assess cooperation and punishment. We found that greater severity of childhood maltreatment was selectively associated w

Discrimination and Posttraumatic Symptomatology Among Trauma-exposed Sexual Minority Women and Transgender and Gender-Diverse People.

Sexual and gender minority women (SMW) and transgender and/or gender-diverse (TGD) people experience high rates of trauma, resulting in mental health disparities such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Nevertheless, contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among SMW and TGD people remain underexamined relative to cisgender, heterosexual people. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether stressors uniquely experienced by minoritized populations (e.g., discrimination) contribute to symptoms over and above general stressors (e.g., trauma exposure). The present study used path analysis to test wh

Predicting marital infidelity based on incompatible mental schemas and emotional divorce in women referring to counseling centers in Iran.

This study investigated the extent to which schema modes and emotional divorce predict marital infidelity among women seeking services at counseling centers in Urmia, Iran. Using a descriptive-correlational design, the target population included all women referred between 2023 and 2025. To minimize issues of missing or invalid responses, 231 women with reported communication difficulties and elevated risk of infidelity were recruited through voluntary sampling. Data were gathered using scales measuring attitudes toward infidelity, schema modes, and emotional divorce. Pearson correlations and s

[Parenthood after sexual violence in childhood and adolescence-decision-making, pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting].

INTRODUCTION: Sexual violence in childhood and adolescence can have a wide-ranging impact. The health consequences have been well researched, and the potential social consequences are also widely known. When dealing with their own parenting, victims/survivors are confronted with specific problems in addition to the issues and questions that can be challenging for all parents. A research project explored what it means to have children and take on parental responsibility after experiencing sexual violence in childhood, focusing on the subjective perspective of those affected. METHODS: In a mixe

Maternal depressive symptoms, child maltreatment, and children's externalizing problems: A three-wave longitudinal study from preschool to school age.

Although the bidirectional relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and children's externalizing problems has been widely explored, the underlying mechanisms driving this cycle remain unclear. Specifically, the mediating role of child maltreatment-a known detriment to both maternal mental health and child development-has not been elucidated within this transactional dynamic. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationships among maternal depressive symptoms, children's externalizing problems, and child maltreatment from the preschool to school-age periods. The relationship between childhood trauma, personality, and subjective well-being in early and late adolescence: a network analysis.

Childhood trauma is strongly associated with impaired subjective well-being (SWB) in adolescence. However, the underlying mechanisms, particularly how they differ across specific developmental stages, remain inadequately explored. Based on the stress process model, childhood trauma may shape adolescent SWB by influencing the development of personal resources, such as personality traits and self-esteem. This study used network analysis to investigate the relationships among these factors based on the stress process model and compared the network model differences between early and late adolesce
