Peer Bullying Victimisation in Adolescence and Intimate Partner Violence Victimisation in Young Adulthood: Protective Factors Against Revictimisation Among Women in Australia.

This study examines whether adolescent bullying victimisation is a precursor to adult intimate partner violence victimisation and, if so, whether specific individual, family, and peer/school factors protect against this form of revictimisation. Nationally representative Australian data showed that women bullied during adolescence (aged 14-15) had 1.87 times higher odds of being victimised by an intimate partner (aged 18-19). Additionally, an adjusted logistical regression revealed that school belonging decreased the odds of revictimisation. Overall, this study shows that there is a relationshi

Informal Caregiver-Observed Fall Risk Indicators and Caregiver Responses to Prevent Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older People: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Informal caregivers are uniquely positioned to recognize subtle changes that precede falls because of their continuous presence in older people's everyday environments. However, caregiver-observed indicators of escalating fall risk have not been systematically synthesized. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence on informal caregiver-observed fall risk indicators and caregiver responses to prevent falls among community-dwelling older people. METHODS: A targeted synthesis of peer-reviewed literature was undertaken using six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, We

Structural Ableism in Dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: Ableism is a system of beliefs, norms and practices that privileges non-disabled bodies and minds while devaluing and disadvantaging disabled people. Disabled people experience persistent oral health inequalities, yet dentistry has largely framed disability as an individual clinical challenge rather than a structural question. In this critical commentary, we apply a structural ableism framework to dentistry and examine how dental education, research, policy and service delivery reproduce normative assumptions about bodies, communication, behaviour and eligibility for care. METHOD:

Cultural Authority and Food Choices: How Intergenerational Power Shapes Maternal Diet in Rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal malnutrition remains a persistent public health challenge in South Africa, affecting both maternal and child health outcomes. Dietary practices during pregnancy and lactation are shaped by complex social dynamics that extend beyond individual choice. OBJECTIVES: This study explored maternal dietary practices during pregnancy, defined as the foods women reported consuming, avoiding, substituting, or concealing, and examined how cultural norms and intergenerational power relations influenced these practices within the context of routine antenatal nutrition counseling. Development of a family functioning measure for Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents experience elevated risks for HIV-related risk behaviors, drug use, and mental-health problems. These problems may be impacted by various family functioning behaviors (e.g., communication, parental involvement). However, existing family functioning measures may not adequately capture the culturally shaped, identity-specific family processes relevant to this population. Thus, we iteratively developed a user-informed measure of family functioning for Hispanic LGB adolescents. METHODS: The study was conducted across phases from

How to Institutionalize and Individualize Educational Programs to Prevent Violence.

We need to build broader, comprehensive and well-established curricula incorporating violence prevention along with other life skills, prevention practices, health information, character building and decision-making. We might be able to take advantage of the curricular revolution that is likely to arrive soon. This revolution will be from the greater deployment of artificial intelligence to personalize the learning process. Strategies are needed to overcome the obstacles to the collaborations required to create these comprehensive curricula. Evaluations are needed of these comprehensive approa

An edible invitation: Recruiting beneficial fungi through what they eat.

Orchid seeds cannot germinate without help from fungi. This commentary features a recent study showing that Cremastra appendiculata seeds release two small compounds that attract a helpful fungus and also serve as food for it. This suggests that plants may recruit fungal partners before contact by offering edible chemical cues to nearby fungi.

Microsolvation Controls Ultrafast Relaxation Pathways in Hydrated Pyridine.

Hydration critically reshapes ultrafast electronic relaxation in biorelevant molecules, yet its mechanistic role remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) following medium-energy (E0 = 103 eV) electron impact ionization of hydrated pyridine, a prototypical nucleobase analogue. Combining multiparticle momentum coincidence spectroscopy with high-level electronic structure calculations, we identify water-initiated ICD and find evidence consistent with an additional pyridine-initiated ICD pathway, in which inner-valence ionization leads to ionization of t

Not just what is taught, but how it is lived: socially accountable education in health professions education.

Social accountability (SA) is a defining institutional mandate in health professions education (HPE), yet how educational approaches associated with SA are experienced in practice remains insufficiently understood. Rather than examining what these approaches aim to achieve, this study explores how they are encountered, interpreted, and made meaningful by those directly involved. We conducted an interpretive descriptive study using rich picture interviews combined with semi-structured interviews with 46 participants, including learners, clinical teachers, community organization members, patient

Design, Synthesis, and Preliminary Investigation on the Mode of Action for a Series of Novel Antimicrobial Peptidomimetics.

Over the years, many antibiotics have been developed, but most have become less effective due to antimicrobial resistance, especially those targeting enzymatic pathways. This growing resistance poses a serious global health threat. It is now recognized that physically disrupting bacterial cell membranes is less prone to resistance development. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising in this regard, though their broader application is limited by their susceptibility to proteolytic degradation and toxicity. To address these issues, peptidomimetics have emerged as a new class of antibacterial

Molecular drivers of cotranslational protein assembly in bacteria.

Protein complexes are pivotal to all major cellular processes. Translation-coupled complex assembly is ubiquitous in eukaryotes, but its molecular basis and prevalence in bacteria remain poorly understood. Here, we combine ribosome profiling and single-molecule optical tweezers to establish principles governing cotranslational assembly of four structurally diverse complexes in Escherichia coli. We reveal how heterotetramers form cotranslationally via hierarchical assembly pathways, with initial heterodimer formation priming the assembly of higher-order oligomers through a topology-dependent or

Say Less! Backchanneling and HPA-axis Attunement, But Not Semantic Synchrony, Relate to Couples' Relationship Quality Across the Transition to Parenthood.

OBJECTIVE: Language and physiology each carry information about how couples attune, yet are rarely studied together, especially during vulnerable periods such as the transition to parenthood. Semantic synchrony, or shared meaning across partners' speaking turns, is a potential marker of relational functioning that may reflect couples' use of active listening and reflection to validate one another's concerns. Semantic synchrony may also intersect with other dimensions of health-relevant synchrony such as covariation in partners' hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. METHODS: The present s

Impact of a phased transition model on Advanced HIV Disease outcomes: A pre- and post-implementation evaluation study in Malawi.

To promote sustainability and strengthen national ownership of Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) services, a transition was implemented across 22 health facilities in Central Malawi. This transition involved shifting responsibility for key AHD program elements from partner-led implementation to full Ministry of Health (MoH) leadership. This evaluation assessed the impact of this transition on diagnostic coverage, TB preventive therapy (TPT) uptake, and 12-month survival outcomes. A retrospective cohort study included all children and adults enrolled in AHD care during the pre-MoH transition (January

Male-First Evaluation Reduces Costs and Time to Pregnancy in Couples with a Varicocele: A Theoretical, Discrete-Time Markov Model.

PURPOSE: To develop a discrete-time Markov model estimating pregnancy success rates and costs of a "male-first" evaluation compared to alternative infertility treatment approaches in couples where the male partner has a clinically significant varicocele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A novel discrete-time Markov chain was constructed using transition probabilities, treatment success, and discontinuation rates derived from published data. Simulation analyses were performed across varying levels of varicocele repair efficacy. The model evaluated hypothetical couples <35 years old with ≥12 months of in

Production of 135La via the 136Ba(p,2n)135La reaction and its DNA-damaging properties as a low-energy Auger electron emitter.

135La is an Auger-electron-emitting radionuclide with promising potential for targeted endoradiotherapy. To date, 135La has been produced mainly via the 135Ba(p,n)135La reaction, with reported activities limited to the 1 GBq range. In this work, we produced 135La via the higher-cross-section 136Ba(p,2n)135La reaction using enriched targets, reaching activities of up to 4.6 GBq at end of bombardment - the highest activity amount reported to date. Two target geometries were investigated, a 90° solid target and a 30° slanted target with higher [136Ba]BaCO3 mass. Their saturation yields were compa

Plant synergid embryonic potential is unlocked following egg cell collapse.

Cell-cell communication is indispensable for cell specification and differentiation throughout plant reproduction. The egg cell and its sister synergid cell have long been considered closely coordinated partners during fertilization, yet the nature of this interplay and their specific roles remain unclear. Here, we show that synergid cells could acquire the competence to initiate cell division for embryogenesis following egg cell collapse. Unlike the traditional view, synergid cells appear to take over the egg cell role without undergoing fate conversion to adopt the egg cell identity. These f

Aperiodic EEG activity is a domain-specific marker of attentional aging in neurotypical adults.

Aperiodic neural activity has been reliably shown to be reduced among older adults, and these reductions are associated with age-related cognitive decline. These results suggest that aperiodic activity, as measured by the spectral exponent, might be a viable electrophysiological biomarker for cognitive aging. However, this has not been tested longitudinally, within participants, during normal aging. Here, we used a longitudinal cohort of either sex to test whether changes in aperiodic activity between two sessions, approximately 5 years apart, track behavioral change across two domains: sustai

The transition to fatherhood beyond early infancy: Hormonal, behavioral and psychological changes.

Previous cross-sectional studies have documented hormonal differences between human fathers and nonfathers. However, the timing and persistence of these changes remain unclear. We previously reported that first-time expecting fathers exhibited lower plasma testosterone (T) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), as well as dynamic changes in oxytocin (OT) across portions of the prenatal and early postpartum period compared with partnered nonfather controls. By four months postpartum, however, these group differences were no longer significant. Here, we extend these findings longitudinally into late in
