Resilience of Families with Children Across COVID-19: A Mixed Methods Analysis of Stability and Change.

OBJECTIVE: The current mixed methods study builds on previous research on family resilience during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to better understand family risk and resilience across one year from ~3 months to ~15 months post-COVID-19-pandemic onset in a sample of well-resourced families, elucidating how the chronic nature of the pandemic impacted family functioning, using data from both summer 2020 and summer 2021. METHODS: Children of 265 U.S. parents (258 mothers) were 2.7-14.1 years old in 2020 (51.7% girls, 83.9% White; primarily middle-to-high income famil

Loss, inflammation, and cognition: Understanding the lifecourse impact of early life parental disruption.

Social and structural determinants of health significantly impact well-being across the lifecourse and contribute to ethnoracial disparities in cognitive aging. Early-life exposure to parental disruption (i.e., death, divorce, or separation), which disproportionately affects ethnoracially diverse children, increases the risk of adverse brain health outcomes. Systemic inflammation, a key biological mechanism linking early stress to cognitive aging, affects neurocognitive pathways. However, little is known about how the relationship between parental disruption, inflammation, and cognition varies

Educational Achievements, Labor Market Attachment, and Family Establishment in Children of Parents or Siblings With Acquired Brain or Spinal Cord Injury: A Nationwide Register Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate long-term socioeconomic consequences on children experiencing acquired brain injury (ABI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) in a parent or sibling. DESIGN: Nationwide register-based study. SETTING: Through Danish national population register data, we identified an exposed cohort of children and a nonexposed reference population born in Denmark between 1977 and 2006. PARTICIPANTS: The study population (N=111,405) comprised children who experienced familial injury before the age of 18, divided into 4 groups: (1) children of a parent with ABI (n=74,227); (2) children with a

Childhood antecedents of adult place satisfaction in 22 countries.

We examine how childhood predictors-including retrospectively reported familial relationships, socioeconomic status, health, and religious activities-potentially influence satisfaction with the area or city where one lives (i.e., place satisfaction) in adulthood. Using data from the Global Flourishing Study (N = 202,898) across 22 countries, we conduct a random effects meta-analysis to understand the probable long-term impact of early-life experiences on adult place satisfaction. Our findings reveal that strong relationships with parents in childhood were associated with a slight increase in t

Burden of 375 diseases and injuries, risk-attributable burden of 88 risk factors, and healthy life expectancy in 204 countries and territories, including 660 subnational locations, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: For more than three decades, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) has provided a framework to quantify health loss due to diseases, injuries, and associated risk factors. This paper presents GBD 2023 findings on disease and injury burden and risk-attributable health loss, offering a global audit of the state of world health to inform public health priorities. This work captures the evolving landscape of health metrics across age groups, sexes, and locations, while reflecting on the remaining post-COVID-19 challenges to achieving our collective globa

Correction: Protective effects of liquiritin on polycystic ovary syndrome through modulating ovarian granulosa cell proliferation and apoptosis via miR-206/PI3K/AKT pathway.

UNLABELLED: Patients with colon cancer can experience substantially different outcomes despite comparable anatomical stage, highlighting the need for molecular markers that complement conventional clinicopathological risk assessment. The interleukin-17 (IL-17) cytokine family has context-dependent roles in mucosal inflammation and tumour biology, but the prognostic relevance and cellular context of individual IL-17 receptors in colon cancer remain incompletely characterised. A prespecified family-wide analysis of 11 IL-17 ligands and receptors was performed in the GSE39582 Discovery cohort usi

Duration and timing of depression and risk of family dissolution: A register-based cohort study of newly-formed Danish families.

BACKGROUND: Depression is detrimental to partnership stability. However, it remains unclear if and how the duration and timing of depression affect the risk of family dissolution. METHODS: We conducted a Danish register-based cohort study of newly-formed cohabiting and married couples in 2008 and 2009, who were followed from the second year after family formation. Depressive episodes were defined by individual-level prescription patterns of antidepressant drugs (ATC codes N06A) in either partner. Family dissolution was characterized by the discontinuation of a shared residential address. Usin

Social zeitgeber and sleep loss as risk factors for suicide in American Indian adolescents.

American Indians / Alaska Natives (AI/AN) bear a high burden of suicide, the reasons for which are not completely understood, and rates can vary by tribal group and location. This article aims to identify circumstances reported by a community group of American Indian adolescent participants to be associated with their depression and/or suicide. American Indian adolescents (n  =  360) were recruited from contiguous reservations and were assessed with a semi-structured diagnostic interview. Twenty percent of the adolescents reported suicidal thoughts (ideation, plans), an additional 8% reported

Religiosity, Aging in the Homeland, and Growing Old in the Diaspora: A Longitudinal Study of Two Cohorts of Indian Older Adults.

This article reports a longitudinal study comparing religiosity among two cohorts of Indian older adults-those who age in the homeland of India (AIH cohort) and immigrants (to the USA) or diaspora older adults (DOA). Results indicated that AIH and DOA cohorts' religiosity outcomes were comparable at baseline but there was a statistically significant increase in all outcomes of the DOA cohort at subsequent time points. Women and single older adults in both the cohorts had higher religiosity scores at baseline. Religiosity scores were higher among those in the DOA cohort who migrated following m

Divorce, genetic risk, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a sample with recurrent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Theories of risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) implicate both interpersonal and biological factors. Divorce/separation and aggregate genetic liability are robustly associated with STB, but have seldom been evaluated in conjunction with one another. Furthermore, whether these factors are effective predictors in high-risk populations is not clear. METHODS: Analyses were conducted in a sample of Han Chinese women with severe recurrent major depressive disorder (maximum N = 4380). Logistic regressions were used to evaluate the associations between divorce/separation and po

Residential Mobility in Childhood and Union Dissolution Later in Life.

The limited existing literature studying the effects of childhood residential mobility suggests that it influences a range of life outcomes, at least in young adulthood. Little is known about how the frequency of moving in childhood is related to later-life demographic behaviour in Europe. Drawing on residential and partnership histories from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), this paper examines whether moving in childhood relates to union dissolution in adulthood. It empirically addresses two theoretical explanations underlying the potential association: First, ac

A qualitative study of lived experience and life courses following dam release flooding in Northern Ghanaian communities: Implications for damage and loss assessment.

BACKGROUND: Dams provide water for industrial, agricultural, and domestic use, particularly in arid regions. However, controlled dam releases due to heavy rainfall may affect downstream communities' livelihoods and life courses such long-term impacts may be omitted from damage and loss assessments. This study aims to assess the lived experiences and long-term consequences of dam release flooding for downstream populations, comparing these with the typical scope of a damage and loss assessment (DaLA). METHODS: This research was conducted in two flood-prone districts in the White Volta basin, G

Disparate Effects of Disruptive Events on Children.

Disruptive events such as economic recessions, natural disasters, job loss, and divorce are highly prevalent among American families. These events can have a long-lasting impact when experienced during childhood, potentially altering academic achievement, socioemotional well-being, health and development, and later life socioeconomic status. Much research has considered the overall impact of disruptive events on children's lives, but the consequences of disruption also vary across groups. The same event may have profound negative consequences for some groups, minor or no impact for others, and

Rural-urban differentials in the association between sex preference for children and marital dissolution in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Marital dissolution, which refers to being divorced or separated, is considered one of the most dramatic demographic events that significantly disrupt families. Unearthing the factors predicting marital dissolution would support actions to reduce the incidence of this phenomenon. The present study sought to examine the association between sex preference for children and marital dissolution segregated by place of residence. METHODS: Data for the study were extracted from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Percentages were use

A call for early, effective, and scalable parent education programs for high-conflict separated/divorcing parents: A synthesized perspective from prevention science and family law.

Conflict between parents is stressful and disruptive to children living in the midst of parental separation or divorce. Although some level of post-separation/divorce conflict is understandable in an emotionally-charged separation/divorce, it undermines the extent to which parents protect their children from short- and long-term problems. In this article, we weave together a synthesized perspective informed by our respective training and experience in prevention science and family law on the role of parent education programs for high-conflict separating/divorcing parents. To do so, we first de

Trauma of separation: the social and emotional impact of institutionalization on children in a post-soviet country.

BACKGROUND: In the former Soviet Union (fSU) region, which has the highest rate of institutional care worldwide, 'social orphans' -indigent children who have one or both parents living-are placed in publicly run residential institutions to receive education, food, and shelter. Few studies have focused on understanding the emotional effects of separation and life in an institutional environment on children who grow up with their families. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews (N = 47) were conducted with 8- to 16-year-old children with a history of institutional care placement and th

Unequal effects of disruptive events.

Disruptive events have significant consequences for the individuals and families who experience them, but these effects do not occur equally across the population. While some groups are strongly affected, others experience few consequences. We review recent findings on inequality in the effects of disruptive events. We consider heterogeneity based on socioeconomic resources, race/ethnicity, the likelihood of experiencing disruption, and contextual factors such as the normativity of the event in particular social settings. We focus on micro-level events affecting specific individuals and famili

Does coparenting improve during the OurRelationship program? Explorations within a low-income sample during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Low-income couples are at an increased risk for relationship instability and divorce, which can have residual impacts on coparenting between the two partners. Growing evidence suggests that brief online relationship education programs can be an effective tool for alleviating relationship distress among low-income couples. However, findings remain mixed when it comes to whether benefits from relationship-focused programs not explicitly addressing coparenting spillover to coparenting among those with children. This preregistered study sought to investigate whether couples participating in an evi

The mediating pathways between parental separation in childhood and offspring hypertension at midlife.

Social life course determinants of adult hypertension are relatively unknown. This paper examines how parental separation before age 10 relates to hypertension at age 46. Adjusting for parental confounders and considering the role of adult mediators, we aim to quantify unexplored mediating pathways in childhood using prospectively collected data. Data from the 1970 British Birth Cohort Study are utilised. Hypertension is measured by health care professionals at age 46. Potential mediating pathways in childhood include body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, illness, disab
