Racial disparities in lung cancer mortalities in the United States: A retrospective analysis.

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and leading cause of cancer deaths globally. In the United States, it accounts for about 1 in 8 of all cancer diagnoses. This study examines racial disparities due to lung cancer-related mortality in the United States, focusing on diverse demographic groups. We queried the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database for mortality statistics associated with lung and bronchus cancer (international classification of diseases-10 code: C34.0) between the years 1999 and 2020. Age adjusted mo

Clinical characteristics of diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia.

RATIONALE: Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is characterised by diffuse bronchial hyperplasia of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells, which are situated within the walls of bronchi and bronchioles. Presenting symptoms are nonspecific and the clinical course varies, making diagnosis challenging. We sought to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with DIPNECH in a large multinational case series to guide and inform future care and research. METHODS: Data were collated from 18 international centres. Information collected included disease presentation,

Safety and anti-inflammatory activity of Gentiana lutea L. in human bronchial epithelial cell cultures.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Gentiana lutea L. is a famous bitter plant frequently used to treat digestive disorders. Ethnopharmacological studies have also revealed a little-known traditional use for respiratory diseases. Although this approach is supported by the recent discovery of bitter taste receptors in the airways, it has not yet been established in clinical practice. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the safety and anti-inflammatory effects of an aqueous G. lutea root extract on human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The extract was chemically characterized

Hypoxia-activated scleraxis a mediates epicardial progenitor differentiation into a unique cardiac perivascular cell type.

The epicardium provides progenitor cells and paracrine signals essential for heart development and regeneration, yet the mechanisms regulating epicardial cell fate remain poorly understood. Here, we identify the transcription factor Scleraxis a (scxa) as a key regulator of epicardial progenitor differentiation in zebrafish. Single-cell transcriptomics, genetic lineage tracing, and cardiac injury models reveal transient scxa expression in activated epicardial progenitor cells (aEPCs) during developmental coronary angiogenesis and heart regeneration. scxa+ epicardial cells predominantly differen

Gene-environment interactions shape cytokine-mediated inflammation and cardiovascular risk.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation is a major driver of cardiovascular diseases, but mechanisms linking systemic inflammation to cardiac remodelling remain incompletely understood. We aimed to evaluate the role of cytokine-mediated signalling and the influence of environmental and genetic factors on inflammation and cardiac phenotypes in a large population-based cohort. METHODS: We analysed subsets of 488 079 UK Biobank participants with metabolomic and proteomic profiling, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, and longitudinal outcomes. Chronic inflammation was quantified using glycoprotei

Role of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) in Detecting Metachronous Primary Tumors: Diagnostic and Clinical Implications From a Single-Patient Case.

Metachronous primary tumors (MPTs) are defined as two or more independent primary tumors and require exclusion of metastatic disease. We report a rare case of metachronous quadruple malignancies in a 53-year-old male over a 10-year period. The patient was initially diagnosed with stage IIA colon adenocarcinoma (2014), followed by high-grade urothelial carcinoma of the left renal pelvis (2017) and non-invasive urothelial recurrence (2022). In 2023, fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) revealed a hypermetabolic left lower lobe lung mass with subcarin

Non-invasive ventilation in the delivery room.

UNLABELLED: Non-invasive respiratory support in the delivery room (DR) is a relatively new concept. Now, instead of immediately intubating most babies in respiratory distress, initial use of nasal CPAP or intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is recommended, to prevent lung injury. How to best implement non-invasive ventilation is still under investigation. What are the best levels of nasal CPAP, is NIPPV better to employ, and how can we synchronize breaths with the infant's efforts are all questions that are not yet answered. CONCLUSION: This article reviews the history of DR re

Voxel-scale diffusion tensor phenomapping of the healthy and pressure-overloaded human heart.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging of the heart is typically performed at millimetre-scale resolution, yielding only four to five voxels across the ventricular wall, limiting the measurement of local spatial variation in cardiomyocyte organization. Here we present a submillimetre in vivo cardiac diffusion tensor imaging method achieved during free breathing that facilitates voxel-level characterization of myocardial microstructure. We introduce a phenomapping framework that combines voxelwise diffusion magnitude and anisotropy with radial and circumferential gradients of cardiomyocyte

Novel Selective Anticancer Effect of Epididymis-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Against HCC38 and MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cell Lines.

Prevalent cancers primarily include breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, and colorectal cancers. In contrast, cancer of the epididymis is very rare, and we propose that this tissue could carry inherent anticancer components, in particular, small extracellular vesicles (EVs) with antineoplastic properties. All cell types release extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their intercellular space, which act in the crosstalk required to achieve homeostasis. Among these, small EVs, which are membrane-bound vesicles with an average diameter of 30-200 nm, can transfer cell-specific cargo, such as lipids, pr

"The CX3CL1- CX3CR1 axis in HIV-associated inflammation and cardiometabolic disease".

The CX3CL1-CX3CR1 axis, comprising the chemokine fractalkine (CX3CL1) and its immune cell receptor CX3CR1, links immune activation to vascular pathology in people with HIV (PWH). Chronic inflammation persists in PWH despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy and contributes to high rates of cardiometabolic comorbidities. This is partly due to dysregulated leukocyte trafficking and endothelial activation. This review synthesizes preclinical, genetic, and clinical evidence on the multifaceted roles of CX3CR1 across immune, vascular, and cardiometabolic processes. CX3CR1 is expressed o

Diagnosis, Referral, Treatment Delays, and Outcomes in Veterans Affairs Patients Undergoing TAVR.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) improves survival and quality of life for patients with aortic valve stenosis. Despite these benefits, logistic and resource-related challenges within healthcare systems lead to delays in intervention. This study evaluates the impact of delays in diagnosis, referral, workup and treatment on survival and heart failure hospitalizations in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health System. This retrospective cohort study of veterans who underwent TAVR at the VA Puget Sound (PUG) from January 1, 2019 to August 31, 2024. Data includes demographics, comorbidities,

Multiomic analysis identifies T cell subsets and mechanisms of epithelial interaction in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal interstitial lung disease characterized by progressive scarring and respiratory failure. While T cells are elevated in IPF lungs, their contributions to fibrosis beyond inflammation remain poorly understood. Here, we performed multiplex imaging and single-cell RNA and protein profiling on about 90,000 CD3+ T cells from control and fibrotic lungs, revealing 11 distinct subsets of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, including a rare CD56+ regulatory T cell. In addition to increased T cell numbers in severely fibrotic lungs compared with non-diseased controls, we

Sequential HER2-targeted antibody-drug conjugate therapy for acquired resistance in a 55-year-old male kidney transplant recipient with metastatic urothelial carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) amplification is a highly lethal malignancy, particularly in complex patients. While antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are promising, their safety and efficacy in renal transplant recipients maintained on chronic immunosuppression remain largely unexplored. Furthermore, there are a paucity of data regarding the sequential use of different ADCs in this high-risk population. This case highlights its unique clinical importance by demonstrating the feasibility and safety profile of biomarker-driven

Recurrent myocardial infarction identified by centralized troponin review: Insights from the MINT trial.

BACKGROUND: The utility of routine troponin testing to identify recurrent myocardial infarction (MI) after an incident MI is unclear. We assessed the incidence and prognosis of recurrent MIs identified from centralized troponin review in patients from the Myocardial Ischemia and Transfusion (MINT) trial. METHODS: The MINT trial randomized patients with acute MI and anemia to a liberal vs restrictive red blood cell transfusion strategy. Suspected recurrent MIs were identified through both site-report and centralized review of troponin levels collected for 3 days following randomization. Differ

Severe Hemoptysis Caused by Right Inferior Pulmonary Vein Perforation During Circular-Array Pulsed-Field Ablation.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) has emerged as a novel energy source for pulmonary vein isolation in atrial fibrillation. Although generally safe, rare complications may occur during catheter manipulation in challenging pulmonary veins. CASE SUMMARY: A 71-year-old man underwent PFA with a circular-array catheter for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Echocardiography showed preserved left ventricular systolic function and a left atrial diameter of 39 mm. The right inferior pulmonary vein (RIPV) measured 15 mm at the ostium but bifurcated immediately, complicating catheter advancement. Du

Breathing and burning: metabolic control of alveolar macrophages by intracellular bacterial pathogens.

Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the lung's phagocytic immune sentinels, programmed to maintain homeostasis while defending against inhaled pathogens. AM metabolism is shaped by both developmental origin and the alveolar microenvironment. Embryonically-derived AMs populate the lungs early in life and develop into long-lived, self-renewing cells displaying lipid-centered, oxidative metabolism that restrains inflammation and preserves alveolar structure. When infection or injury disrupts homeostasis, circulating monocytes are recruited to the airspace and differentiate into monocyte-derived AMs, w

Activation of lung megakaryocyte α7 nAChR exacerbates allergic airway inflammation via IL-33/p38 MAPK signaling.

The cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway attenuates lung inflammation via the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) on immune cells. However, the role of α7 nAChR on lung megakaryocytes (Mks) in allergic airway inflammation remains unknown. In this study, allergen-challenged mouse models were used with conditional Mk-specific Chrna7 knockout, pharmacological activation (GTS-21), and Mk reconstitution. IL-33 expression and p38 MAPK signaling were assessed. We found that allergen challenge upregulated α7 nAChR specifically in lung Mks. Mk-specific Chrna7 deletion significantly alleviate

The avian respiratory microenvironment-immune nexus: A three-dimensional regulation model from local homeostasis to systemic defense.

The avian respiratory tract is a major portal of entry for respiratory pathogens, and the dynamic interactions between the mucosal immune system and resident microbial communities constitute an important component of local defense. Although these interactions are increasingly recognized, substantial knowledge gaps remain regarding the molecular mediators of the gut-lung axis, the interplay between the microbiota and tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells, and the mechanisms that maintain local homeostasis. This review synthesizes multidisciplinary advances in avian respiratory immunology and mic
