Sherlock Holmes and the last Nazi doctor.

In this contribution, we present an original modern-day detective story that we have created based upon Sherlock Holmes and Dr John H. Watson, both fictional characters created by the British author and physician, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). In our tale, an elderly woman is slowly going deaf and experiencing vertigo. Her physicians are unable to determine the etiology of her symptoms but suspect that she was exposed to an ototoxic agent while a prisoner at the Ravensbrück concentration camp during World War II. The patient was a forced subject in Nazi medical experiments, but theNazis

Literacy as rehabilitation in youth custodial settings: integrating education, cognition and desistance.

PURPOSE: This paper aims to examine how structured literacy education in youth custodial settings may function as a rehabilitative process supporting cognitive engagement, identity development and future-oriented thinking among justice-involved young people. Literacy education is widely recognized as a core component of youth custodial programming, yet its contribution to rehabilitation and psychosocial well-being remains under-theorized within prison health and education research. The paper introduces the literacy-desistance integration model (LDIM) as a practice-informed conceptual framework

Mental health vulnerabilities among incarcerated women: correctional professionals' perspectives in Spain.

PURPOSE: Women in prison have been reported to show greater vulnerability to mental health problems when compared to women in the general population or incarcerated men. Despite growing research on prison mental health, fewer studies have examined correctional professionals' perspectives as they relate to the mental health needs and vulnerabilities of incarcerated women. This study aims to analyze correctional professionals' perceptions of the mental health needs and vulnerabilities of incarcerated women in Spain. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A questionnaire to 362 professionals across 32 Spa

Correctional-staff wellness in a statewide jail system: health appraisals, occupational strain and priorities for organizational support.

PURPOSE: Although substantial research has examined correctional officer health, fewer studies have focused on jail staff, and even fewer have done so within a unified, statewide jail system. This study aims to address this gap by examining staff perceptions of health and wellness across Tennessee's county jails, where centralized oversight enables system level insight. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Open-ended questionnaire data from 412 correctional personnel were analyzed following survey distribution to staff across all 120 Tennessee county jails. While jails are typically decentralized, Te

Experiences of Prisoners Living With Mental Health Conditions and Seeking or Receiving Mental Health Support in Prisons: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners experience poor mental health and well-being in prison, including severe mental illnesses. However, access to mental health support and treatment in prison is limited. We conducted an integrative review to synthesise prisoners' experiences of living with mental ill health and/or seeking or receiving mental health support in prisons. METHODS: A systematic search of peer-reviewed empirical studies published from 2014 to 2024 was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Databases searched included Medline, PsycINFO and CINAHL. We included studies of adult prisoners (aged ≥ 18

Long-term health, criminal justice, and socioeconomic outcomes among people subject to compulsory mental health care in Norway: a nationwide registry cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Compulsory mental health care aims to manage risk and treatment needs among people with severe mental illness, but evidence on long-term outcomes across health, justice, and socioeconomic domains is scarce. We aimed to compare long-term outcomes across adult groups defined by community treatment orders (CTOs), compulsory hospitalisation, compulsory observation, and voluntary mental health care, and the general population. METHODS: In this nationwide registry cohort study, we identified all individuals aged 18-65 years with specialist mental health-care contact in Norway from Jan 1

Stigma toward persons with mental illnesses in prison.

PURPOSE: The healthcare provision for mentally ill offenders in Germany remains inadequate, despite higher prevalence rates compared to the general population. We examined whether stigma-based discrimination is greater toward this group compared to individuals with somatic illnesses and/or non-incarcerated individuals. METHODS: In February 2025, we conducted a quota-based online survey among adults living in Germany (aged 18 years or older; n = 1,609), in which respondents were randomly assigned to one of eight case vignettes varying by illness (schizophrenia vs. diabetes), incarceration stat

Kafkaesque systems: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of lived experiences of stateless migrants within the UK.

Statelessness affects an estimated 4.3 to 10 million people worldwide, denying them access to fundamental rights including education, employment, healthcare, and freedom from arbitrary detention. While stateless individuals are recognised as a marginalised group at elevated risk of human rights violations, discrimination, and trauma, the psychological impact of statelessness remains under-researched. This study aimed to explore how adults with lived experience of statelessness in the UK make sense of its impact on their mental health, and how they access support for any psychological difficult

Development of Custodial Staff Modifiers for Safewards Secure-Custodial Mental Health.

Safewards is a nursing model of care designed for acute mental health inpatient units. Since inception, the model has gained popularity in many countries and has been implemented in settings other than mental health. A version for bed-based mental health units within prisons has also been developed to assist nurses working in this complex setting called Safewards Secure-Custodial Mental Health. A previous study identified that modifiers (things staff can do to prevent conflict and containment) were needed for custodial staff to finalise the prison model. The aim of this study was to develop cu

Implementation evaluation of a Massachusetts pilot program designed to reduce overdose deaths among Black and Latino men returning from incarceration.

INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXT: In response to rising and disproportionate overdose deaths, a Massachusetts agency developed a program model (CARE) that incorporated evidence-based and evidence-informed practices to support recovery and overdose prevention for Black and Latino men returning to their communities from incarceration. Recruitment of Black and Latino men at risk of overdose was intended to begin in local jails prior to release. Key program components included culturally-responsive care, person-centered care, support for social determinants of health (SDoH), community building and social

Elective transabdominal preperitoneal repair of an incidentally detected spigelian hernia with massive sigmoid colon protrusion through a small fascial defect: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Spigelian hernia is a rare type of ventral hernia. The hernia orifice is generally narrow, and incarceration of the contents - usually omentum or small bowel - is a common problem. CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old man underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) incidentally revealed a left Spigelian hernia with protrusion of the sigmoid colon through a small fascial defect. Considering the potential risk of future incarceration, elective hernia repair was planned, and laparoscopic transabdominal preperitone

Menstrual health inequities in carceral settings: a global systematic review.

This study aimed to synthesise global evidence on menstrual health experiences, needs, and barriers among incarcerated populations and identify opportunities to advance menstrual health equity in prison settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2000 and December 2025. Quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods studies, and relevant grey literature were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, appraised quality, and synthesised findings na

Extracting the Unexpected: A 35-mm Curved Nail as an Intraocular Foreign Body.

BACKGROUND Management of posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies is challenging, requiring the preservation of ocular integrity and restoring vision. Traumatic endophthalmitis occurs in 7% to 13% of penetrating injuries, particularly with coexisting intraocular foreign bodies. Managing posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies poses significant challenges due to their complex clinical presentation and the need to achieve multiple goals during treatment. This unusual case of a large metallic intraocular foreign body associated with traumatic cataract, retinal detachment, and endophthalm

Delayed Multi-Compartment Traumatic Hernias After Blunt Abdominal Trauma: A Case-Based Review of Diagnosis and Staged Management.

BackgroundTraumatic diaphragmatic hernias (TDHs) and traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWHs) are uncommon sequelae of blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) and may be missed during the initial evaluation. Delayed presentation can occur months to years later, resulting in incarceration, obstruction, or respiratory compromise.Case PresentationA 61-year-old woman presented 1 year after a motor vehicle collision with abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, and dyspnea. Computed tomography demonstrated an incarcerated left diaphragmatic hernia containing colon and omentum, along with a right flank hernia con

Risk and determinants of tuberculosis recurrence: a 12-year population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis recurrence remains a challenge to elimination efforts in high-burden settings. We aimed to estimate the incidence and timing of tuberculosis recurrence and to identify its risk factors to inform post-treatment care. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of tuberculosis survivors successfully treated for a first tuberculosis episode from 2013 through 2024 in São Paulo state, Brazil. Data were obtained from the state tuberculosis surveillance system (TBweb), and deaths were identified through linkage with the national mortality database. We applied compe

New Model of Care Achieving Micro-Elimination of Hepatitis C in the United Kingdom's Largest Prison.

Wales aims to achieve the World Health Organisation goal of eliminating hepatitis C (HCV) as a public health threat by 2030, with micro-elimination in prisons identified as a key target. In January 2022, HMP Berwyn, the largest prison in the United Kingdom, introduced a multi-disciplinary blood borne virus (BBV) team and a streamlined testing and treatment pathway incorporating opt-out testing, peer support, point-of-care viral load testing and pharmacist-led prescribing. This service evaluation describes implementation of the pathway and its outcomes. Data relating to testing and treatment we

Obturator hernia misdiagnosed as inguinal incarceration: a case of postoperative small-bowel perforation and subcutaneous fecal emphysema.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: An obturator hernia is a rare condition accounting for less than 1% of abdominal wall hernias. Due to its deep pelvic location and nonspecific clinical presentation, it is frequently misdiagnosed, most often as an inguinal hernia. Delayed or incorrect diagnosis may result in bowel ischemia and perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 61-year-old man who underwent emergency open surgery at another institution for a presumed strangulated right inguinal hernia with placement of prosthetic mesh. No operative report was available regarding intraoperative

Costly missed connections: Visitation and misconduct in California prisons.

Social isolation is a major public health crisis with particularly deleterious consequences for vulnerable populations including incarcerated people. Theoretically, visitation from family should reduce social isolation and improve outcomes among incarcerated people, but existing quasi-experimental research provides limited support for the relationship between visitation and in-custody outcomes. We revisit the effect of visitation on in-custody misconduct-an important but administratively defined measure of institutional safety-by exploiting the fact that fluctuations in gasoline prices create
