Neuropilin-2 Deficiency Promotes Mitochondrial Dysfunction and NAD⁺-Dependent Cellular Senescence in Retinal Degeneration.

IMPORTANCE: Drug use and incarceration have a substantial impact on rural communities, but factors associated with the incarceration of rural people who use drugs (PWUD) have not been thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVE: To characterize associations between recent incarceration, overdose, and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment access among rural PWUD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: For this cross-sectional study, the Rural Opioid Initiative research consortium conducted a survey in geographically diverse rural counties with high rates of overdose across 10 US states (Illinois, Wiscons

Predictors and Moderators of Long-Term Outcome of Persons at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis: Methods and Preliminary Data.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite significant advances in our understanding of the clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis state, the longer-term outcomes (5+ years) and the trajectory of diagnoses, symptoms, and psychosocial function have been seldom investigated. OBJECTIVE: Here we describe the methods for "Predictors and Moderators of Long-Term Outcome of Persons at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis," an ongoing study that is being conducted across North American Prodrome Longitudinal Studies sites that included n = 2184 past participants (1999-2018). Critical illness in prisons: a multi-methods analysis of reported healthcare safety incidents in England.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners have disproportionately poorer health and complex needs compared with the general population. Prisons should provide care that is equivalent to community care to achieve equitable health outcomes, which includes managing physical deterioration. AIM: To characterise reported patient safety incidents involving critically unwell prisoners and identify opportunities to improve prison healthcare systems. DESIGN AND SETTING: Secondary multi-methods analysis of incident reports submitted from English prisons to the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) between 2018 and

Traumatic Incarceration of a Right Inguinal Hernia Due to a Deceleration Injury Following Airborne Operations: A Case Report.

Anterior abdominal wall hernias are a common and well-described surgical pathology occurring in an estimated 5%-10% of the population. Here, we describe a patient found to have acute incarceration of omentum through a patent processus vaginalis (PPV) secondary to a high-energy deceleration injury following airborne operations. Many studies and meta-analyses have been performed to examine the association between occupational risk factors, patient factors, and precipitating events leading to acute hernia and found insufficient evidence to support a causal link between single strenuous events and

Reimagining rehabilitation: addressing basic needs and substance use in prison environments for the common good.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to reinforce the importance of rehabilitation, which is considered to be one of the key elements in the correctional environment that deters crime and reduces the rates of recidivism. Although rehabilitation efforts, such as substance use treatment, have benefits, the condition of the prison environment, specifically the lack of basic needs, can thwart the efforts of the rehabilitative process. This study builds upon previous research to propose institutional adjustments to the incarceration environment to better support rehabilitation. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY

Family Therapy Post-Incarceration: Perspectives and Possibilities.

The lasting impacts of incarceration can deeply affect the family unit. While family services are crucial for promoting reunification and stability, these services are often underutilized and difficult for families to access as they navigate re-entry after prison. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, eight men released from incarceration participated in interviews to share their perspectives on family-based services, particularly family therapy. Four key themes emerged from the interviews: beliefs and emerging awareness of family therapy, obstacles to accessing therapy, therapeut

Hepatitis C treatment in a jail setting: A retrospective cohort analysis of low-barrier initiation of direct acting antivirals.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of individuals with hepatitis C virus (HCV) experience incarceration. Jails house individuals who are pre-trial or for short sentences and represent a critical setting to expand HCV treatment access. Low-barrier treatment models may help overcome implementation barriers to initiating treatment in jail settings. In 2021, the Rhode Island Department of Corrections began implementing low-barrier HCV treatment including take-home medications for those released before completing therapy in both a jail (pre-trial) and prison (sentenced) setting. This study aime

To better understand why people use new psychoactive substances in prison - outcomes of polish, qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) have become increasingly prevalent in prison environments, serving both social and emotional functions. While research has extensively examined NPS use in the general population, little is known about the specific motivations driving their use among incarcerated individuals. Given the restrictive nature of prison life, substance use motivations may differ from those outside correctional facilities. This study aimed to identify the key motives behind NPS use among prisoners in Poland. RESULTS: 6 Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with prisoners and 32 i

History of incarceration and oral health among older adults with diabetes: a population-based study of tooth loss and dental care.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine associations between history of incarceration (HOI) and two oral health outcomes (tooth loss and dental care utilization) among older adults with diabetes, as well as identify factors that may mediate these associations. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors used self-report data from the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (a population-based study of adults aged >50 in the USA) to evaluate associations between HOI and the two oral health outcomes, controlling for demographics. FINDINGS: HOI was associated with greater odds of perman

Management of strangulated, perforated gastrothorax with resultant tension pneumothorax secondary to an iatrogenic diaphragmatic hernia: a case report.

Diaphragmatic hernias arise when a defect in the diaphragmatic musculotendinous framework allows the abnormal protrusion of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity, which can be further complicated by visceral incarceration, strangulation, and perforation. Whilst the vast majority occur congenitally or are acquired through trauma, diaphragmatic hernias arising from iatrogenic insults represent an exceedingly rare but important clinical entity. Diagnostic challenges arise in large part due to their tendency towards delayed presentation, often with varied, nonspecific and subacute clinical m

Rehabilitation and Re-entry Programmes for Justice-Involved Individuals and Their Effectiveness in Social Reintegration: A Systematic Review.

Prison rehabilitation and community re-entry programmes implemented during incarceration or in the transitional period serve as significant mechanisms for facilitating justice-involved individuals in their post-release adaptation. This systematic review summarises various types of rehabilitation and re-entry programmes in prisons and in the community, and assesses their effectiveness in reducing recidivism and improving social reintegration among incarcerated and recently released justice-involved individuals. The database searches yielded a total of 2,333 papers, of which 34 studies were incl

Intersectional Lives, and Ecological Risks: The Association between Criminal Legal System Exposures and Suicide Attempts among Black Youth.

BACKGROUND: Suicides among Black youth are rising at an alarming rate; however, the roles of criminal legal system exposures in suicide attempts remain understudied. We examined whether police interactions, household incarceration, and self-reported delinquency are associated with past-year suicide attempts among Black youth and whether these associations differ by gender. METHODS: We analyzed survey data from U.S.-born Black youth aged 18-24, collected during February-April 2023 (women: n = 270; men: n = 84).We described sample characteristics by gender, estimated bivariate logistic regressi

Missed opportunities for culturally responsive treatment: Applying the sequential intercept model to Latino behavioral health and justice pathways.

This study explores pathways into and out of the criminal justice system for Latinos with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, emphasizing missed and successful opportunities for intervention. Using a qualitative design, we retrospectively apply the Sequential Intercept Model-a framework for identifying points of intervention along the justice continuum-to 15 in-depth life history interviews with Latinos in South Texas. By incorporating adverse childhood experiences, mental health symptoms, and substance use onset, we map trajectories across all six intercepts, from communit

Left Behind in Electronic Access: Control Over Personal Health Information While Incarcerated.

Patients increasingly expect timely, secure access to health information, a right reinforced by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and expanded under the 21st Century Cures Act. Yet millions of individuals receiving care in jails and prisons remain excluded from these advances. Incarcerated populations bear a disproportionate burden of chronic disease, psychiatric illness, and substance use disorders. For many, incarceration presents consistent contact with healthcare, though access to personal medical records during and after detention remains limited. Although the Cures
