Service Providers' and Re-entrants' Perspectives of Community Re-entry and Community Reintegration Programs After Incarceration.

The purpose of the study was to elucidate the occupational challenges of re-entrants. Convenience and snowball recruitment strategies were used to solicit participants for this exploratory, interpretive phenomenological approach study. Five re-entry service providers and four re-entrants completed extensive interviews. Three levels of open, axial coding were completed with the transcripts. Two primary contexts were acknowledged between service providers and re-entrants: Barriers and Successful Reintegration. Themes were identified: Appreciating Re-entrants' Narratives, Person Centered Approach

Impact of Offender Schizophrenia Diagnosis on Public Perceptions of Crime and Punishment.

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) make up only 6% of the U.S. population but represent up to 40% of those incarcerated. This overrepresentation is likely due to systemic discrimination, exemplified by people with SMI being twice as likely to be arrested as those without SMI. This study continued examining this discrimination by investigating the impact of one SMI, schizophrenia, on public perceptions of crime. Participants viewed and evaluated two criminal case records where the offender either had schizophrenia or did not have schizophrenia. Contrary to hypotheses, offenders witho

Who Counts, Who's Accountable: Independent Scholarship and the Future of Carceral Mortality Oversight.

Deaths in jails and prisons are rising, yet the federal government lacks a reliable system to track or prevent them. This essay examines the Department of Justice's failure to implement the Death in Custody Reporting Act and produce accurate and timely data on deaths behind bars. We call for transferring responsibility for carceral mortality monitoring to public health systems with capacity to identify multilevel drivers of death and support interventions that promote prevention and accountability. Shifting this responsibility affirms the value of lives lost and moves surveillance from error-p

Blunt trauma-induced abdominal wall hernia with small bowel incarceration: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is a rare sequela of blunt abdominal trauma, characterized by disruption of the abdominal musculature and fascia without skin penetration. Diagnosis may be challenging and delayed, with complications such as bowel incarceration or strangulation requiring urgent intervention. This report describes a TAWH complicated by bowel obstruction, followed by a narrative review of relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old male presented with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and a right flank mass, three days after a road traffic accident. Phys

Experiences of Health Care Professionals Caring for People From Prison in Acute Hospital Settings: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

People from prison often present to acute hospitals with complex and chronic health conditions. Their presentation to acute hospitals poses unique challenges for health care professionals (HCPs) who work outside prison hospitals. This systematic review aimed synthesize evidence on the experiences of HCPs caring for people from prison in acute hospitals. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines informed the structure of this review. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025625502). Electronic databases were searched for relevant primary studies p

The impact of incarceration on health: A global systematic review.

Health outcomes for people released from incarceration are often poor, but it is unclear to what extent these poor outcomes are a result of incarceration or are a consequence of pre-existing morbidity and health risk. We synthesised published evidence regarding the impact of incarceration on physical and mental health. We searched five electronic databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL Complete, Medline, EMBASE, and Campbell Collaboration) for primary research articles measuring at least one health outcome both before and after an episode of incarceration. We screened articles published in any country and

Near-source wastewater surveillance as a non-invasive tool for disease detection in prisons.

Near-source wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) offers a non-intrusive alternative to clinical testing of whole prison populations. Prisons sit at the centre of high transmission risk but experience limited health-care access and barriers to testing individual prisoners. However, the use of WBE for health protection in prison settings has been limited. To assess its merit during the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations were quantified in 680 composite wastewater samples collected from 14 prisons across England and Wales between January and June 2021. Viral RNA was detected in 48% o

Dental Insurance Status Among Formerly Incarcerated Older Adults.

Formerly incarcerated individuals have poorer oral health and less frequent dental care utilization than the general population. However, prior work has overlooked the relationship between prior incarceration and disparities in dental insurance coverage. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 11,638), findings from multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrate that formerly incarcerated older adults are significantly less likely to have dental insurance coverage (odds ratio [OR] = 0.745, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.608, 0.912). After accounting for the income-to-poverty

Conjugal visits and conception: Bioethical and medico-legal challenges in correctional settings.

The recent introduction in Italy of unsupervised conjugal visits for prisoners is part of a broader trend that has been well-established across numerous European countries. This provision is grounded in the respect for constitutional rights and the principles set out by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which underscores the centrality of private and family life even for incarcerated individuals. This development raises significant bioethical and medico-legal challenges, which have yet to be fully explored, particularly regarding conception during conjugal visits. The present article

Spatial Pattern of Outdoor PM2.5 Air Pollution in U.S. Prison Landscapes from 1998 to 2022.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with the development of diseases and premature death. However, little is known about the potential PM2.5 exposure of incarcerated populations. In this paper, we used satellite-derived data to assess outdoor PM2.5 concentrations at 1,593 prisons in the contiguous U.S. from 1998 to 2022. Across our study period, despite overall national decreases in PM2.5 concentrations and disparities, prisons on average experienced higher pollution than the nonincarcerated U.S. population. In 2022, over 500 prisons had spatially averaged concentrations

Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in U.S. Correctional Facilities-A Review of Epidemiology and Law.

Roughly 1.8 million individuals were detained or incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities in 2022. Prior research has found that incarcerated persons are at increased risk for foodborne outbreaks. We aim to summarize recent national outbreak surveillance data and describe the nexus between disease burden and the law to inform prevention efforts. First, we describe epidemiological data for single-state correctional and all noncorrectional foodborne outbreaks during 1998-2022 that were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System

Pregnancy and Postpartum-Related Accommodations During Incarceration: A Review of Policies in the United States.

Incarcerated pregnant and postpartum people are a marginalized group at risk of adverse health outcomes. Routine carceral policies such as search protocols; work, housing, and bunk assignments; and provision of clothing and hygiene products may not be designed for optimal pregnancy and postpartum health. This study examined federal and state statutes and regulations that amend carceral policies to accommodate pregnancy and the postpartum period through a systematic review in WestLaw. We analyzed content from returned statutes and regulations and developed summaries of statutes and regulations

Hepatitis C infection among people incarcerated in Norwegian prisons.

BACKGROUND: People in prison have a high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection due to the prevalent incarceration of people who inject drugs. The primary aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of HCV infection among people incarcerated in Norwegian prisons with special focus on people who inject drug (PWID). METHODS: Consecutive, newly incarcerated individuals in 6 prisons were offered to participate. Within the first two weeks of incarceration, participants were tested for anti-HCV and the presence of HCV RNA. Demographic, social and behavioral data including drug use was co

Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Correctional Facilities: A 2022 Cross-Sectional Survey of Health Care Staff.

A national, anonymous, online survey was administered inviting 3,161 correctional health professionals to examine the associations between facility characteristics and the availability of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in jails and prisons. Responses from 268 participants representing 212 correctional facilities were analyzed. We used multivariate logistic regression to identify associated facility characteristics, and open-ended responses were analyzed using content analysis. Facilities in the Western United States had higher odds of providing MOUD compared with those in the Midwe

Deciding when to make noise: A study of youth voice in carceral contexts.

Many advocates seek to engage young people in justice reform efforts, arguing that youths' voices will produce a more just legal system. However, it is unclear what youth voice and civic engagement more broadly mean to young people or how experiences such as incarceration shape the ways youth speak out. The purpose of this study is to develop a theory explaining how youth involved in the legal system use their voices to address issues affecting their lives and communities. The study used community-engaged and constructivist grounded theory methodologies to interview 14 formerly incarcerated yo

Guidelines, practices, and interprofessional roles in oral health promotion in custodial settings: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: People in custodial settings are disproportionately affected by, often preventable, oral diseases. Addressing oral health inequities is vital to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage by 2030. Obstacles to achieving Universal Health Coverage for oral health in the custodial context include the deficit of oral health professionals in such settings. Innovative workforce models of non-dental professionals are recommended to integrate oral health into routine custodial care. Despite this, no comprehensive review has been undertaken to s

Drug use vs. abstinence after incarceration: associations with competing psychosocial needs and their relevance to the importance of treatment.

BACKGROUND: Many people with histories of criminalized drug use resume using drugs after leaving incarceration, yet limited research explores the specific needs and vulnerabilities of these individuals compared to those who remain abstinent. We examined the relationship between post-incarceration drug use and competing psychosocial needs, as well as these needs' association with views regarding substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. AIMS: (1) Compare psychosocial needs between individuals with recent drug use post-incarceration and those who were abstinent. (2) Examine which needs are associ

Cohort Differences in the Cumulative Risk of Criminalization in Texas.

Studies estimating the cumulative risk of imprisonment have been central to documenting the rise of incarceration and its consequences for inequality in the United States. Data limitations have stymied efforts to document the risk of criminal legal contact falling short of imprisonment, however, and few studies estimate risks among groups other than Black and White men. Although less severe than imprisonment, subfelony contact also carries damaging and lifelong consequences. Using more than 25 years of administrative criminal record data from Texas, this study estimates the prevalence of both

A scoping review of medical education and care of patients with criminal-legal system involvement.

BACKGROUND: Caring for over 5 million people in the United States with criminal-legal system involvement (CLSI) poses unique ethical and medical considerations for physicians. Despite the rise of academic medical center partnerships with correctional facilities, no framework to teach learners to navigate the care of patients with CLSI exists. The current literature lacks a clear picture of the motivations, formats, and quality of educational interventions for medical learners providing care to patients with CLSI. This scoping review examines educational interventions and commentaries on caring

Healthcare Access Disparities among Youth in Detention: Access among Latino Youth.

Latino youth experience significant healthcare disparities, particularly in juvenile detention facilities, where access to appropriate medical care is often limited. These disparities can contribute to a range of negative health outcomes, largely influenced by systemic factors such as socioeconomic status, cultural barriers, and inadequate health services tailored to their specific needs. Using logistic regression analyses, we examine individual and situational factors influencing healthcare access and outcomes among 377 detained youth. Specifically, we assess the likelihood of visiting a doct
