Navigating dual roles: The psychological well-being and role perception of ex-soldiers who served as military correctional guards.

While imprisonment's impact on correctional staff has been widely studied, little attention has been given to military prisons. Addressing this gap, the study examines role perception and mental well-being among 18 former Israeli soldiers who served as correctional guards. Using qualitative methodology and semi-structured interviews, the research reveals three key themes: the complexity of working with diverse inmate populations, navigating multiple prison authorities, and balancing burnout with a strong sense of mission and responsibility. Findings highlight the unique dual identity of milita

Disparities in diagnosis and management of hypertension by incarceration status for patients receiving care in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals have increased rates of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, but often receive no regular medical care. The primary objectives of this study were to examine the associations between incarceration and the presence of undiagnosed or uncontrolled hypertension in a patient population treated in the emergency department (ED) of a large, urban, safety-net hospital. We hypothesized that incarcerated patients would have higher odds of undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension compared to non-incarcerated patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional analy

Pediatric Criminal Legal System Involvement and Functional Limitations in Early Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Theory and research suggest that being arrested, incarcerated in a juvenile facility, or incarcerated in an adult facility before 18 could be associated with higher levels of functional limitations during adulthood when compared to noncriminal legal system (CLS) involved individuals. This pathway may exist due to limited health care access during early adulthood. We hypothesized that CLS involvement before 18 could be associated with higher levels of functional limitations directly and indirectly through health care access. METHODS: The data come from the National Longitudinal Surv

Risk behaviors and prevalence of hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs in Georgia: integrated bio-behavioral survey (IBBS).

INTRODUCTION: Injection drug use (IDU) poses significant public health risks, including the transmission of blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of risk behaviors associated with IDU and the prevalence of HBV and HCV among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Georgia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in seven cities of Georgia in 2022, involving 2005 PWID aged ≥18 years. Participants were recruited using respondent-driven sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and blood samples were

Development of prison-based parent-child joint intervention for incarcerated fathers: protocol for mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal incarceration represents a significant stressor that disrupts family cohesion, undermines paternal identity and adversely affects children's psychosocial well-being. While family-focused programmes show promise in improving outcomes for incarcerated parents and their children, culturally attuned prison-based parenting interventions remain underdeveloped and scarce, particularly in Asian contexts. To address this gap, a local parenting intervention grounded in the Double ABCX model of family resilience, the 'Be My Hero' programme, was designed for incarcerated fathers in

Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Prison (DECISION) care pathway and training package: protocol for a realist-informed mixed-methods feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research indicates that around 8% of older people living in prison have signs or symptoms of dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), yet the care they receive is not equivalent to care in the community and this means their needs may not be met. We co-developed an intervention specifically for older people living in prison with dementia/MCI (Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment in prison care pathway and training package-DECISION). To date, this has not been implemented or evaluated. This paper presents our protocol for a study to assess the feasibility and acceptabi

Navigating harm reduction and security mandates: Prison leadership perspectives on implementing prison needle exchange programs in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Prison needle exchange programs (PNEPs) reduce bloodborne virus transmission among people who inject drugs, yet global implementation remains limited. Canada introduced PNEPs in 2018, but uptake is low, and barriers to implementation persist. While perspectives of correctional officers, healthcare workers, and incarcerated individuals have been examined, little is known about how prison leadership shapes program delivery. Drawing on interviews informed by the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) framework, we sought to identify the organisational, system

Mapping access to abortion from prisons and immigration removal centres in the United Kingdom, British crown dependencies, and the Republic of Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: Despite legalization, barriers to accessing abortion persist in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and British Crown Dependencies, including distance to care. These barriers may be exacerbated for people incarcerated or detained in prisons and Immigration Removal Centres (IRC). This study aimed to identify the distance from prisons and IRCs to the nearest public abortion providing service in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and British Crown Dependencies. STUDY DESIGN: We identified facilities that detain women and girls and public services that provide abortion by co

Legal Financial Obligations: An Understudied Public Health Exposure.

The impacts of exposure to the criminal justice system on health-related outcomes are well studied in the U.S. However, although previous studies focus on the impacts of arrest, incarceration, and re-entry on health, they neglect a critical component of the criminal justice system: legal financial obligations. Legal financial obligations, which include fines, fees, and other surcharges, are levied at nearly every stage of the criminal justice process, entrench individuals into a cycle of poverty, and exacerbate known social determinants of health such as food and housing instability and loss o

Not All Birds Can Fly: My Winter as a Prison Nurse.

BACKGROUND: Rates of incarcerated young people are low in the UK. Yet hundreds of children remain in custody for violent and sexual offences. The prison system presents multiple obstacles for delivering effective nursing care, including a restrictive environment, a lack of positive male role models, and histories of trauma. PURPOSE: This article reflects on my placement at a young offender's institution. It explores the woundedness of the young people, the staff, and the challenges of working in such a desolate space. It also considers how nursing must navigate the moral ambiguity of caring f

Differences in Hospitalization and Inpatient Death Patterns by Incarceration Status in 31 US Jurisdictions, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Population-based studies that examine both hospitalization and inpatient death patterns by incarceration status are sparse. We sought to compare hospitalization and inpatient death patterns by incarceration status in the United States. METHODS: In this retrospective study of adults aged 18 to 64 years, we used the 2021 State Inpatient Database files from 31 US jurisdictions, which included discharges from general acute care hospitals. We compared hospitalization and inpatient death patterns among incarcerated adults versus nonincarcerated adults using adjusted rate ratios (ARRs) an

Prevalence and correlates of drug use during incarceration among people with opioid use disorder: A focused decision tree analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder is prevalent among incarcerated populations. However, gaps remain in the literature regarding the prevalence of incarcerated drug use and the factors associated with this behavior. This study explores the correlates of incarcerated drug use among individuals recently released from incarceration. METHODS: We used data from the multi-site TCN PATHS study, a hybrid type-1 trial, which recruited people with OUD just prior or immediately following release from incarceration. At baseline, participants reported incarcerated drug use, past criminal legal involveme

How can we maximise the benefits of smoke-free prisons? Decision analytic model to predict potential impacts on public health.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking prevalence remains high in disadvantaged populations such as people in prison. Smokefree prisons protect health, however around 90% of people who smoke pre-prison, relapse to smoking shortly after release. If people released from smokefree prisons maintain smoking abstinence this could benefit their health and finances. Knock-on effects of smoking relapse on families could also be avoided. Offering an intervention to reduce relapse to smoking on release has the potential to benefit released people and their families. This study assesses potential costs and outcome

Bowel Diameter at the Obturator Canal as a Predictor of Bowel Resection in Incarcerated Obturator Hernias.

BACKGROUND: Obturator hernias are a relatively rare condition that predominantly occurs in thin elderly women and are frequently associated with bowel incarceration. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are vital. This study aimed to identify risk factors for bowel resection in patients with incarcerated obturator hernias and evaluate the clinical benefits of laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair (TAPP). METHODS: This retrospective study included 32 female patients diagnosed with incarcerated obturator hernias at our institution between January 2008 and June 2025. T

Construction of Fatherhood Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged and Predominantly Black Fathers: A Grounded Theory Study.

This grounded theory study examines how socioeconomically disadvantaged and predominantly Black fathers construct fatherhood identity amid systemic adversity. Drawing on 11 focus groups with 40 fathers enrolled in a U.S. Midwestern fatherhood program, the study explores the multidimensional nature of fatherhood and the ways in which structural, interpersonal, and identity-based factors shape paternal engagement. Using iterative coding and comparative analysis, findings reveal three central themes: (a) evolving dimensions of engaged fatherhood that transcend biological ties and traditional patr

Healthcare in a system of punishment: how clinicians experience care work within carceral settings.

BACKGROUND: The harms experienced by individuals incarcerated in prisons and jails have been well-documented; however, little is known about the experience of healthcare clinicians in their work in carceral institutions. Using qualitative methods, we interviewed 20 clinicians who deliver care in California’s prisons and jails to better understand their experiences. RESULTS: Participants described a carceral culture which impeded the delivery of care. These barriers to providing healthcare included limiting the clinicians’ ability to develop a trusting patient-clinician relationship and structu

Using human-centered design to explore telemedicine to improve healthcare engagement among individuals transitioning from prison to community in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) often underutilize healthcare services due to multifaceted barriers, especially those transitioning from the criminal legal system. The potential of telemedicine to improve healthcare access for PWUD transitioning from prison to the community remains underexplored. This study investigates the acceptability and feasibility of telemedicine among PWUD and their caregivers. METHODS: We first conducted a cross-sectional survey to explore healthcare utilization patterns and incarceration history. Logistic regression identified factors associated with telemedi
