INTRODUCTION: Given the accelerated aging processes and elevated fall risk associated with functional decline in correctional settings, developing effective exercise programs for older inmates is increasingly important.
METHODS: This study examined the potential effects of a six‑week balance‑training program on static and dynamic balance performance, well‑being, and enjoyment of physical activity among older inmates in an open German prison. Ten male inmates (mean age = 62.1 ± 4.4 years) participated, with five assigned to an intervention group and five to a control group. The intervention co

BACKGROUND: Irreducible knee dislocation (IKD) is a rare but severe injury, accounting for approximately 4% of all knee dislocations and characterized by soft tissue incarceration that precludes closed reduction. Current management remains debated, particularly regarding the optimal timing of ligament reconstruction (single- vs. two-stage) and the choice of surgical approach.
PURPOSE: To investigate the short-term efficacy and outcomes of 1-stage arthroscopic reduction combined with reconstruction of knee stability for irreducible knee dislocation (IKD).
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of

People being released from prison face a heightened risk of HIV acquisition, yet there is need for additional research to quantify that risk and identify which groups should be prioritized for prevention efforts. We performed a population cohort study of people released from Washington State prisons to estimate the HIV acquisition risk post-release and applied machine learning methods to identify subpopulations at highest risk. We linked state prison release rosters (1/1/2010 and 12/31/2021) to HIV surveillance data to calculate HIV incidence post-release and used a decision tree to partition

Exposure to criminal-legal systems, including policing, arrest, and incarceration, has deleterious effects on access to health and social services among people who use drugs. Women who use drugs (WWUD) may be especially vulnerable to policing, due to the high prevalence of sex work among them, which is also a criminalized behavior. Recent epidemiologic events and policy reforms are thought to have reduced exposure to arrests for low-level, non-violent crimes; in Baltimore City, this decline was demonstrated following the COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of de facto decriminalization of mis

Historically, the number of women taken captive during wars has been significantly lower than that of men, primarily because women have rarely participated actively in combat. In the two major instances in which Israeli women were taken captive-during the War of Independence and in the war of October 7, 2023 - most of the female captives were civilians. The aim of this article is to examine the unique experience of captivity among women through a review of past cases of female prisoners of war, both globally and in Israel. The female experience of captivity highlights the heightened risk of se

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar hernias are rare abdominal wall defects, either primary or secondary, with symptoms like flank masses or bowel obstruction. Though uncommon, incarceration occurs in about 9% of cases, necessitating early surgical intervention. While both open and laparoscopic repairs are viable, laparoscopic methods, especially the totally retroperitoneal endoscopic approach, have shown promising outcomes despite the technical challenges associated with this technique. Over the past 5 years, we employed this technique in various lumbar hernias, with favorable recovery results, highlighting

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals provide essential services to populations in the criminal justice system, often at the expense of their own well-being. This review synthesized literature findings on mental health challenges faced by healthcare professionals working in the US forensic-correctional settings since the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the prevalence of mental health conditions, their risk-protective factors, the impacts of these mental health issues on workplace retention, and highlighted relevant recommendations.
METHODS: This study followed PRISMA guidelines. A comprehen

"Wasping" is an emerging trend where pyrethroid-based insecticides are intentionally inhaled. Michigan's pesticide surveillance program identified events in Michigan wherein correctional officers and incarcerated persons required medical evaluation at local hospitals after "wasping" exposures. Michigan's pesticide surveillance program reviewed case reports involving acute pesticide exposures. Demographic characteristics, signs and symptoms, and clinical outcomes were evaluated and described for each exposed correctional officer and incarcerated person. Reports identified 11 separate events at

Prisons offer a critical opportunity for hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination, yet current data from Danish correctional facilities are sparse. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 16 prisons across Eastern Denmark between October 2022 and August 2024, enrolling 651 incarcerated individuals. All participants underwent HCV antibody and RNA testing using dried blood spots and completed a bio-behavioural risk survey. The prevalence of HCV antibody and HCV RNA was 4.2% (n = 26) and 2.0% (n = 13) respectively. HCV exposure was most prevalent among individuals with a history of injecting drug use

This article presents findings from a national survey of 287 counties across 43 states assessing jail mortality between 2019 and 2024 in an attempt to compare private health care provider outcomes with county providers. The findings demonstrated that currently available information cannot serve as a reliable measure of health care quality in correctional settings due to sociocultural reporting constraints. Institutional and cultural deterrents to objective reporting have led to incomplete records, misclassified causes of death, and failures to maintain legally mandated death reports. There is

Formerly incarcerated individuals reentering the community face persistent structural barriers to health care, leading to delayed treatment, suboptimal disease management, and increased incidence of preventable morbidity. Many academic medical centers support student-run free clinics (SRFCs) for underserved patients, yet none explicitly focus on reentry health. We describe a collaboration between a university-affiliated SRFC and a community reentry organization to create a reentry clinic serving individuals returning from incarceration. By embedding this clinic within an existing SRFC network,

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has crucial implications for correctional rehabilitation, with higher rates of abuse and neglect being associated with lower rates of treatment completion. This necessitates a valid screening tool for prison-based rehabilitation programmes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the psychometric properties of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) in a New Zealand (NZ) correctional context and explore participants' experiences completing the questionnaire.
PARTICIPANTS: The quantitative study involved 174 men from prison-based rehabilitation programmes (n = 75) an

OBJECTIVE: Burnout among correctional nurses is a growing concern, with 50% to 62% reporting symptoms and intent to leave their positions. This occupational phenomenon, marked by emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion, stems from chronic workplace stress and is exacerbated in correctional environments due to overcrowding, perceived threats of violence, and limited autonomy. This study aimed to assess environmental contributors to burnout among nurses located in a southeastern U.S. county correctional facility.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design and the Maslach Burnout Inventory paire

This article examines medical and lay perceptions of captivity-induced psychopathologies observed among British prisoners of war during the Second World War. Drawing on medical reports, POW memoirs, and camp publications, it explores how both medical and lay observers understood captivity-induced neurotic illness as a collective, environmentally driven disorder rather than an individual pathology. By reintroducing 'barbed wire disease' into the historical narrative, this paper challenges trauma-centred interpretations of military psychiatry and highlights the social and environmental dimension

Here, we respond to some of the thoughtful and critical concerns raised by the reviewers as our attempt to continue the conversations on the protection of constitutional rights during first production and remand in Magistrate Courts in Delhi. In particular, we respond to the comments about the role of the naib court, formally a part of the police and yet, as our observations show, functioning as a part of the administrative court machinery. We also focus on the reviewers' emphasis on semi state actors such as the doctors whose role during the pretrial process has rarely been analysed despite t

Youth incarceration is beset by psychological challenges, often amplifying distress and hindering healthy development. This study investigates the relationships among social support, resilience, and psychological distress among incarcerated juveniles in Ghana's correctional facilities. A three-wave longitudinal study (6-month interval) was used in a sample of 220 incarcerated juveniles (with a mean age of 16.71 years and SD of 1.53) in both junior and senior correctional centres. The results indicate that resilience at T2 mediated the effect of social support at T1 on psychological distress at
