Do Sexual Orientation Myths Influence Caring Behaviors Among Nurses and Nursing Students? A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexua + individuals continue to face disparities in health care, which have been associated with sexual orientation-related prejudices and limited cultural competence among health care professionals. Insufficient integration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexua+ content in nursing education may further contribute to challenges in providing equitable and inclusive care. This research examined how sexual orientation beliefs effect the care practices of nurses in care, education, and counseling services and

Evaluating PEACHES: Pleasure-Inclusive Implementation Strategies to Enable Healthcare Workers to Address Anal Sex Stigma During HIV Service Encounters.

Stigma toward anal sex hinders HIV prevention by limiting equitable access to sexual health services. To mitigate this hindrance, we developed a clinician- and community-informed package of anti-stigma implementation strategies using the Behaviour Change Wheel and its Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour (COM-B) Model. The package, "Partnering to Enhance Anal Health Communication and HIV-related Evidence-based Services" (PEACHES 1.0), combined training strategies with quality improvement (QI) strategies. We implemented a pilot evaluation of PEACHES 1.0 among HIV workers in the Southe

Sexual orientation and behavior: A cross-sectional study of STI patients at Vietnam hospital of dermatology and venereology.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major global public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sexual orientation and sexual behaviors among patients diagnosed with STIs. Understanding this relationship is essential for clinical practice at the National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology, as it informs individualized risk assessment, counseling, and preventive interventions across diverse patient populations. In addition, such evidence contributes to the development of targeted STI-prevention strategies that are both culturally app

Queer in college? Sexual orientation disparities in therapist effectiveness in a national sample of university counseling center clients.

Over the past 2 decades, a growing body of research has revealed that therapists differ in how effective they are at facilitating change depending on their clients' social identities (see Imel et al., 2011, for example). Most studies examining the phenomenon of variability within therapists' caseloads are based on the study of client race/ethnicity. However, two were recently published that found that therapists varied in the association between their clients' sexual orientation and their therapy outcomes (Cabrera et al., 2023; Drinane et al., 2022). The present study sought to replicate and e

Barriers to Adolescent Pre-exposure prophylaxis and Sexual Health Care in Pediatric Versus Family Medicine Providers.

Over 7000 youth ages 13-24 are diagnosed annually with HIV-1 in the United States despite the 2018 approval of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents, highlighting the need for more research on provider prescribing practices in pediatric populations. Prior research chiefly focuses on patient barriers to accessing PrEP, and thus, our study explored provider barriers. From August to December of 2023, we conducted a survey of medical providers in pediatrics, family medicine (FM), and internal medicine (IM)/pediatrics. A 5-point Likert scale (0-4) assessed comfort in providing adoles

Parental questions about sex chromosome aneuploidies regarding sex, gender, and sexual orientation as reported by genetic counselors in a prenatal setting.

The introduction of cell-free DNA screening has resulted in increased prenatal identification of sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs). This study aimed to evaluate genetic counselor experiences disclosing SCAs positive prenatal screening or testing results and genetic counselor-reported parental questions regarding sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Forty-eight prenatal genetic counselors completed the survey. When asked to quantify their experiences, 97.9% of counselors reported disclosing a SCAs positive screen result within the previous year, and 81.3% disclosed a diagnostic result. Of thos

Evaluating Dual Process Decision-Making Along the PrEP Consumer Journey: New Insights for Supporting PrEP Use.

With the rise of new and emerging Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) modalities, greater attention is needed to better understand how people who could benefit from PrEP make decisions to initiate, stop, pause, or switch PrEP regimens. In this study we borrow from the field of consumer research to create a consumer-derived PrEP Consumer Journey Model that describes key decision-making touchpoints a PrEP consumer moves through within and outside of a clinical context. Using in-depth interviews (n = 29) with gay and bisexual men who have sex with men, we evaluate which system 1 (emotional) and syste

Gender and Sexual Orientation Differences in Sexual Violence Knowledge, Prevention Behaviors, and Care-Seeking Behaviors.

Sexual violence (SV) on college campuses disproportionately affects cisgender (nontransgender) women, sexual minorities (e.g., gays/lesbians, bisexuals), and gender minority (e.g., transgender/nonbinary) people. This study investigates gender and sexual behavior differences in common SV intervention targets-SV-related knowledge, prevention behaviors, and care-seeking. We analyzed cross-sectional survey data, collected in 9/2015-3/2017, from 2202 students aged 18-24 years attending college health and counseling centers at 28 Pennsylvania and West Virginia campuses. Multivariable multilevel mode

Communicating about sexual activity and intimacy after a heart attack: a cross-sectional survey of Australian health professionals.

AIMS: Sexual activity and intimacy improve quality of life for heart attack survivors. After a heart attack, patients frequently experience sexual dysfunction and anxiety about resuming sexual activity. However, most health professionals do not discuss sex or intimacy with their patients. The aim of this research was to explore the perceptions and practices of Australian health professionals in discussing sexual activity and intimacy with heart attack survivors and the barriers to achieving this. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study employed a cross-sectional study design and online self-administe

The Effects of Prostate Cancer Treatment on Role-In-Sex in Gay and Bisexual Men: Mixed Methods Results from the Restore-1 and Restore-2 Studies.

Gay and bisexual men (GBM) with prostate cancer experience worse sexual and mental health outcomes following prostate cancer treatment than heterosexual men. Emerging evidence suggests that GBM may change their role-in-sex in response to treatment effects. The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of prostate cancer treatment on role-in-sex, to estimate the prevalence of such changes, and to determine the impact on quality of life and mental health. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 sexual minority prostate cancer patients. Then, we recruited 401 gay and bisexual prost

The myth of the safe space: Sexual orientation disparities in therapist effectiveness.

Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective on a broad level (e.g., Wampold & Imel, 2015); however, a growing body of literature has revealed that some therapists have outcome inequities within their caseloads. These inequities have been observed on the basis of social identities including race (see Imel et al., 2011, for example) and gender measured on the binary (Owen et al., 2009). However, despite the great need for further research on sexual minority populations in psychotherapy, this phenomenon has yet to be explored on the basis of sexual orientation (i.e., if a disparity exists within

Racial/Ethnic and Sexual Orientation Identity Differences in the Receipt of a Sexual History Assessment from a Health Care Provider among Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Differential sexual history assessment, whereby certain groups are more or less likely to be asked questions about their sexual behavior by a health care provider, may lead to differential sexual health care and counseling. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the 2013 through 2019 waves of the National Survey of Family Growth, we examined racial/ethnic and sexual orientation identity differences in receiving a sexual history assessment from a health care provider in the last 12 months among U.S. women aged 15-44 years (N = 14,019). Influence of gender and sexual identity on adolescent skin health.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Studies have identified dermatologic conditions and relevant skin-related behaviors that distinctly or disproportionately impact sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults compared with their cisgender/heterosexual counterparts, but whether these observations apply to SGM adolescents remains unknown. We aimed to describe the nature and frequency of skin conditions in SGM youth relative to their cisgender/heterosexual peers and explore adolescents' attitudes toward their skin health and accessing dermatologic care. METHODS: SGM and cisgender/heterosexual youth aged 13-21 yea

Moving from "I" to "We": A Grounded Theory Analysis of Couple Therapy with Liver Patients and Their Partners.

Prior research indicates that couples who cope with chronic illness from a relational "we" orientation experience more positive outcomes than couples that cope individually; however, little prior research identifies clinical processes that promote reciprocity or how societal gender processes are involved. This grounded theory analysis of 25 videotaped therapy sessions with six heterosexual couples coping with chronic liver disease (LD) used a feminist-informed relational lens to focus on the clinical processes involved in shifting from an individual to a relational orientation. Findings identi

Building Competence in Practice with the Polyamorous Community: A Scoping Review.

The landscape of relationships, gender, and sexuality continues to change rapidly across the world. This includes recognition of relationship styles such as polyamory, in which individuals have multiple romantic relationships with the knowledge and consent of all involved. In the academic literature on polyamory, social work perspectives are noticeably absent. Thus, a scoping review concerning social work, counseling, and polyamory was conducted to assess knowledge from the last decade and to contribute to the field. The themes that arose were the need for clinicians to examine their biases to

Approaches to Vaginal Bleeding and Contraceptive Counseling in Transgender and Gender Nonbinary Patients.

The transgender community has faced a long-standing history of prejudice and discrimination that has negatively affected their health. A lack of health care provider education and comfort with transgender medicine further challenges the ability of this population to obtain competent, gender-affirming medical care. As with all patients, a thorough patient history with avoidance of assumptions of sexual orientation based on gender identity is integral to providing appropriate care for transgender individuals. Vaginal bleeding in transgender men should be evaluated in a similar manner to natal wo

Examining mental health practitioners' perceptions of clients based on social class and sexual orientation.

There is negligible research exploring mental health clinicians' perceptions of clients based upon client social class and sexual orientation (McGarrity, 2014; Whitcomb & Walinsky, 2013). The purpose of this study was to examine how licensed mental health clinicians' perceptions of clients were influenced by a hypothetical client's social class and sexual orientation using a 2 (lower social class vs. higher social class) × 2 (lesbian vs. straight) quasi-experimental vignette-based design. Results from 257 practitioners demonstrated that the hypothetical client portrayed in the video was rated
