Perioperative immunonutrition and outcomes in head and neck cancer surgery - a randomized clinical trial: Effects of perioperative immunonutrition in patients with head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of perioperative immunonutrition (IN) versus standard enteral nutrition (EN) on short-term postoperative outcomes in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted with 34 HNC patients (17 in the intervention group and 17 in the control group). Five days before surgery, the intervention group received 3 sachets of IN (arginine, omega 3, nucleotide), whereas the control group received 3 boxes of a standard EN product. Postoperatively, both groups continued their respective nutritiona

Scaling Up a Diabetes Prevention Program in Geographically and Ethnoculturally Diverse Urban Regions of Canada: Protocol for a Hybrid Type 2 Implementation-Effectiveness Study.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that type 2 diabetes (T2D) impacts an estimated 5.3 million Canadians, despite the condition being largely preventable. Laboratory-based diabetes prevention programs (DPPs) have limited effectiveness when translated into community settings due to their low-quality delivery and inability to reach people in the community most in need. To date, no community-based DPPs have been implemented nationwide across Canada. Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) is a diet and physical activity counseling intervention that significantly reduces the risk of developing T2D and has bee

Endometriosis and eating disorders: epidemiology, shared neurobiology, and clinical implications.

Growing evidence suggests that women with endometriosis may be particularly vulnerable to disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) and clinically defined eating disorders (EDs). This narrative review aims at integrating and critically analyzing the current evidence regarding the relationship between endometriosis and EDs, as well as highlighting the psychosocial and neurobiological vulnerabilities of women with endometriosis to DEBs. A large-scale genetic study showed a nearly threefold increase in the odds of EDs in women with endometriosis, and a significant genetic correlation. Although the preva

Clinical Features of Hypo- and Hypervitaminosis of Fat-Soluble Vitamins in Pediatric Patients.

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are crucial for pediatric health, contributing to normal cellular function, growth, immune defense, and development. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, they are absorbed with dietary fats and stored in the liver and adipose tissue, leading to risks of deficiency (hypovitaminosis) and toxicity (hypervitaminosis) in certain physiological and pathological conditions. This narrative review aimed to summarize the clinical manifestations, diagnostic considerations, and management of hypo- and hypervitaminosis of fat-soluble vitamins in pediatric populations. A compr

Metal exposures and their interactions with the dietary inflammatory index on inflammatory biomarkers in Mexican adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metals, like lead, arsenic, and cadmium, are linked to increased inflammation even in early life; however, anti-inflammatory diets may offset these effects. METHODS: We evaluated associations between heavy metals and inflammatory biomarkers, and potential effect modification by diet in 399 adolescents aged 10 to 18 at baseline who attended two study visits 2 years apart (773 observations). At baseline, blood lead, urinary arsenic, and cadmium concentrations were measured, and the Children's Dietary Inflammatory Index (C-DII) was calculated. Fasting serum interleukin (IL)-4,

Plant-Forward Dietary Approaches to Reduce the Risk of Cardiometabolic Disease Among Hispanic/Latinx Adults Living in the United States: A Narrative Review.

Background: Cardiometabolic risk (CMR), including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and impaired glucose regulation, disproportionately affects Hispanic/Latinx adults in the United States (U.S.). Although plant-forward dietary patterns are established as cardioprotective, less is known about how dietary patterns within Hispanic/Latinx subgroups relate to CMR. Methods: A narrative review was conducted of observational studies among U.S. Hispanic/Latinx adults (≥18 years) examining defined dietary patterns (a priori, a posteriori, or hybrid) in relation to CMR outcomes (e.g., BMI, waist circu

A patient-mediated strategy to improve nutrition care after transition from hospital to home for pancreatic cancer surgery: a pilot randomised controlled trial study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition counselling is recommended after pancreatic cancer surgery given the complex nutritional problems patients experience. In practice, access and delivery of nutrition counselling after pancreatic surgery varies across settings. To address this gap, our study team developed the Support Through Remote Observation and Nutrition Guidance (STRONG) programme, an implementation strategy that addresses common barriers to nutrition care delivery in oncology. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The STRONG programme includes a standardised protocol to specify the timing and amount of nutrition c

Use of dietary and herbal supplements and communication with hematologists regarding such use among patients with CLL: a national survey.

Use of dietary and herbal supplements (DHS) is common among patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but data in the era of targeted therapies are limited. We conducted a national prospective survey of Hebrew-speaking adults with CLL in Israel (2025), assessing DHS prevalence, patterns of use, sources of recommendation, reporting to hematologists, and patient expectations. Multivariate logistic regression identified factors associated with DHS use. Among 267 respondents, 49% reported current or past DHS use. Use was independently associated with female gender and residence in Central

Food Allergy in India: Delphi Consensus Statement by Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP)-Allergy and Applied Immunology Chapter.

Food allergy is an emerging public health concern in India, driven by rapid urbanisation, changing dietary patterns, environmental influences, and increasing recognition of allergic diseases. Despite the growing burden, food allergy care in India is challenged by limited epidemiological data, variable diagnostic practices, and inadequate access to specialised services. These gaps underscore the need for standardised, context-specific guidance tailored to the diverse sociocultural and dietary landscape of the country. This consensus document was developed by a multidisciplinary panel of allergy

The role of mediterranean diet and highly processed foods in inflammatory bowel diseases.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is considered a balanced dietary model, whereas high consumption of highly processed foods (HPF) may worsen metabolic health. We aimed to compare adherence to the MD and HPF consumption between patients with Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), and to assess their relationship with disease activity. A secondary objective was to explore the association between dietary patterns and metabolic parameters. METHODS: Adherence to the MD was assessed using the Pyramid Mediterranean Diet Score (PyrMDS), while HPF intake was evaluated with the short

Familial colorectal cancer: risk factors, screening strategies and personalized medicine.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with approximately 25-30 % of cases exhibiting a familial component driven by germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes (Lynch syndrome) or the APC gene (familial adenomatous polyposis). Despite advances in screening and early detection, significant challenges persist in identifying at-risk individuals, optimizing surveillance strategies and addressing disparities in access to genetic testing and preventive care. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the genetic underpinnings, modifiabl
