Unhealthy feeding practices in early childhood: prevalence and associated factors in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Feeding practices during early childhood are critical to health and development. In low- and middle-income countries, many young children are exposed to sweetened beverages and processed foods, which may contribute to poor dietary quality. This study assessed the prevalence and correlates of unhealthy feeding practices (UFPs) among Bangladeshi children aged 6-23 months. METHODS: Data were derived from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. The analysis included 2608 children aged 6-23 months living with their mothers. Three infant and young child feeding indicators wer

Prevalence and Lifestyle Correlates of Premenstrual Syndrome and Its Severity Among Female University Students in Yemen: A Cross-Sectional Study of Dietary Habits and Qat Use.

Background Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a significant public health challenge that adversely affects the quality of life and academic performance of young women. While lifestyle factors are implicated in its etiology, evidence from populations experiencing protracted conflict and resource limitations is critically lacking. This study investigates the exploratory prevalence, symptom patterns, and modifiable lifestyle correlates of PMS severity among female university students in Yemen. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 175 female students aged 15 to 25 from a university in

Female community health volunteers' knowledge and confidence in providing community-based diabetes self-management support in Nepal: A biphasic mixed method evaluation.

Self-management support by community health workers, referred to as Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) in Nepal, can enhance diabetes care in resource-constrained settings. We assessed FCHVs' knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, and barriers to supporting diabetes self-management before and after training. Guided by the Health Belief Model, we conducted a biphasic, Qual + quan, concurrent, embedded mixed-methods evaluations among 28 FCHVs in four wards in rural mid-Western Nepal. We evaluated the program into two phases, each consisting of focus group discussions (FGDs); trainings that

Behavioral-Gastrointestinal Interaction Between Night Eating Syndrome and GERD Among Saudi Adults: Implications for Clinical Screening and Lifestyle-Based Care.

Background and Objectives: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder that significantly affects quality of life. Night eating syndrome (NES), characterized by evening hyperphagia and nocturnal eating, may worsen reflux through delayed gastric emptying and increased nocturnal acid exposure, yet evidence in young adults remains limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of GERD and NES, examine their association, and identify clinically relevant predictors among adults in southern Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 8

Supplementation with mixed nuts does not improve inflammatory biomarkers or dietary inflammatory potential in post-myocardial infarction: a secondary analysis of the DICA-NUTS trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Systemic inflammation is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events, and nut-enriched diets are often recommended after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the effects of mixed nuts on inflammatory biomarkers in secondary prevention remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of incorporating mixed nuts into the Brazilian Cardioprotective Diet (DICA Br) on systemic inflammation and dietary inflammatory potential in post-AMI patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: This secondary analysis of the DICA-NUTS randomized controlled trial included 170 adults post-AMI, a

Development of a culturally tailored medical nutrition therapy to improve dietary adherence in type 2 diabetes in Benin: an ORBIT model-based protocol.

BACKGROUND: Dietitian-led medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is an effective and cost-efficient strategy for improving dietary adherence and glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, culturally adapted MNT interventions that account for local food systems, food security, and sociocultural eating practices remain scarce in African contexts. This paper describes the development of Objectif Santé Diabète Bénin (OSanDiaBé), a culturally tailored, dietitian-led MNT intervention designed to improve dietary adherence and glycemic control among adults with T2D in Benin, West Africa,

Does Weight Loss Translate to Workplace Gains? Results of an Employment Questionnaire in Adults With Prediabetes and Overweight or Obesity.

AIMS: Excess weight is associated with adverse health and economic disadvantage. Observational studies suggest that people with obesity are less likely to be employed and have lower income, potentially from workplace discrimination. This study examined whether weight loss achieved through a structured, dietitian-supported program improved financial outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An employment questionnaire was embedded within a clinical trial conducted between 2015 and 2019, investigating the effect of dietary supplements on metabolic health in otherwise healthy adults with prediabetes and

Dietary intervention among young cancer survivors within the CARE for CAYA program.

PURPOSE: A healthy diet and weight can reduce the risk of secondary diseases in child, adolescent, and young adult (CAYA) cancer survivors. METHODS: The nutrition module of the CARE for CAYA program, a multimodal survivorship program, implemented needs-based dietary interventions for CAYAs (aged 15-39 years) at 14 German university clinics between December 2017 and July 2020 (RCT: January 2018 to July 2019). Individual needs were determined at baseline (T1), and those with high need for dietary intervention received intensified intervention (intervention group (IG)), while the control group (

Impact of a Culturally Adapted Intervention on Early Childhood Caries Among Immigrants-A Cluster-Randomised Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is reported to be more common among immigrant children than their native counterparts. There are no community-based studies that assess the effectiveness of an intervention in reducing the risk of ECC among immigrant children in Norway. This study aimed to assess the effect of a culturally adapted intervention on ECC, plaque, feeding and oral hygiene habits in immigrant children, as well as on their parents' oral health behaviours. METHODS: Seven primary health centres in Bergen, Norway, were randomly assigned to either an intervention or a control gro

The influence of traditional food consumption on Cameroonian immigrants' perception of type 2 diabetes in Minnesota: an exploratory qualitative study.

PURPOSE: This study explored how traditional food consumption shapes perceptions of type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk among nondiabetic Cameroonian immigrants residing in Minnesota, USA. The focus was on participants' dietary behaviors, lifestyle adaptations, and experiences with the U. S. healthcare system. Guided by an integrated theoretical framework-including the Health Belief Model (HBM), socioecological theory (SEM), risk/protective factors, and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-the study aimed to understand perceived influences rather than establish causal effects. METHODS: Thirteen Cameroonian i

Mapping Diabetes Care in Kenya Through a Systems Thinking Lens: A Narrative Review Using the WHO Health System Building Blocks and the Intervention-Level Framework.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes prevalence in Kenya is rising, yet care remains constrained by fragmented service delivery, shortages of trained health workers, limited access to diagnostics and medicines, and weak integration of diabetes education and nutrition counselling. These challenges reflect underlying system dynamics that are insufficiently captured by linear assessments. METHODS: This narrative review synthesised evidence published between 2015 and 2025 and examined diabetes care in Kenya through a systems-thinking approach combining the WHO Health System Building Blocks (HSBB) and the Inter

Effect of a protein intervention during resistance training with varying training intensities on muscle outcomes in frail community-dwelling older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Optimising nutritional and exercise strategies is essential to preserve muscle health and physical function in frail older adults. This study aims to investigate the effects of a protein intervention during progressive resistance training (PRT) with varying training intensities on muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance in frail community-dwelling older adults. We were particularly interested in whether these effects differed according to variations in habitual protein intake and resistance training intensity. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled tr

The Macular Degeneration Preventive Diet and Lifestyle for Providers and Patients: From Evidence to Action.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss among older adults, with both genetic and modifiable risk factors contributing to disease progression. Robust prospective evidence demonstrates that dietary patterns rich in lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids-particularly through green leafy vegetables, fatty fish, and Mediterranean diet adherence-reduce AMD progression risk by 20-56% across disease stages. Lifestyle factors including smoking cessation, weight management, and regular physical activity also confer protective benefits. Despite ample ev

Hypoglycemia Occurrence and Risk Factors in Insulin Independent Patients After Total Pancreatectomy With Islet Autotransplantation.

BACKGROUND: Total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation (TPIAT) alleviates pain and preserves islet function in patients with severe pancreatitis. Although approximately one third of recipients achieve insulin independence, spontaneous hypoglycemia has been observed in this population. Its frequency, risk factors, and management remain poorly characterized. METHODS: Using prospectively collected data on insulin-independent (TPIAT) recipients at the University of Minnesota (2010-2023), we compared patients who developed hypoglycemia (defined as documented blood glucose < 70 mg/dL) to
