Cardiovascular risk assessment with SCORE2 and targeted health dialogues in primary care patients with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mental illness face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), mainly due to unhealthy lifestyle habits. The CVD risk assessment tool Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation 2 (SCORE2) does not assess modifiable lifestyle factors beyond smoking. In Sweden, Targeted Health Dialogues (THD) are used in primary care as a structured, person-centred approach designed to evaluate lifestyle behaviours that influence CVD risk. Unlike SCORE2, the THD assesses a broader set of modifiable lifestyle-related cardiovascular risk factors, including BMI, waist-hip ratio, diet quality,

Evaluating hemoglobin versus hematocrit measurements in the diagnosis of anemia among pregnant women in Woliso town, Ethiopia: a mixed-methods study.

Anemia during pregnancy remains a public health concern in Ethiopia. While hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is the WHO-recommended standard for diagnosing anemia, hematocrit (Hct) continues to be used in many resource-limited areas. However, evidence comparing Hb- and Hct-based diagnostic classifications among pregnant women in Ethiopia remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between hemoglobin- and hematocrit-based diagnostic methods and to determine whether these methods yield comparable estimates of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Woliso town. A faci

Ultra-processed foods, lifestyle management, and cardiovascular diseases: A clinical consensus statement of the European Society of Cardiology Council for Cardiology Practice and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have increasingly displaced traditional diets globally and have become a significant public health concern, particularly in relation to cardiovascular (CV) diseases. UPFs are defined as food products primarily composed of cheap industrial ingredients, additives, and neo-formed compounds, often with little to no nutritional value. These foods are highly processed and contain additives that can have harmful effects on health. While traditional dietary guidelines have long emphasized the importance of limiting animal-derived fats and promoting the intake of fruits, ve

Genetic susceptibility and gene-environment interactions in gastric cancer among ethnic populations of Northeast India.

Northeast India has a high burden of gastric cancer, but the factors driving this elevated risk remain poorly understood. This study examined genetic polymorphisms, germline mutations, and lifestyle factors contributing to gastric cancer risk in populations from Nagaland and Tripura. We conducted a case-control study of 190 gastric cancer patients recruited at the hospitals and 317 healthy community controls, integrating PCR-based genotyping of GSTM1, GSTT1, CYP2E1, TLR2, TLR4, TNF-α, and IL-10 with detailed assessment of lifestyle, diet, and Helicobacter pylori infection, alongside ARMS®-base

Long-term citrate treatment in high-risk kidney stone formers is not associated with metabolic adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: Citrate is frequently applied in kidney stone formers (KSFs), yet long-term safety data are lacking. We evaluated the effects of prolonged citrate therapy on metabolic health, urinary risk factors and stone recurrence in high-risk KSFs in Switzerland. METHODS: The Swiss Kidney Stone Cohort (SKSC) is a multicenter study including KSFs and controls. Blood and urine analyses were performed at baseline and longitudinally over 2 years in KSFs, with subsequent telephone follow-up for stone events. A total of 654 KSFs (110 with citrate, 544 without) and 207 controls were included. Outcom

Metabolic health effects of the timing of lifestyle behaviours in a combined lifestyle intervention in adults who have obesity or are overweight with complications: protocol for a two-armed, cluster-randomized, pragmatic trial-a TIMED study.

BACKGROUND: As done in combined lifestyle interventions (CLI), a combination of physical activity, diet, and sleep interventions is effective in reducing body mass index (BMI) and hyperglycaemia. The timing of the behaviours during the day may also affect metabolic health, due to individuals' circadian rhythms, but the impact of this is not well known. Thus, the inclusion of education on the timing of lifestyle behaviours may be an important addition to CLIs. Therefore, we aim to investigate the metabolic health effect of adding education on timing of lifestyle behaviours to an online CLI amon

Prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among lactating mothers in Jimma Town, Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study using Bayesian logistic regressionmodel.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition among lactating mothers remains a major public health concern, particularly in low-resource settings such as Ethiopia. Adequate maternal nutrition during lactation is essential for the health and wellbeing of both mothers and their children. Bayesian logistic regression was employed in this study because it provides robust parameter estimation under uncertainty and allows the incorporation of prior information. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of undernutrition and identify its associated factors among lactating mothers in Jimma Town, Oromia Region, Ethiopia

The scope of practice of nurses and allied health professionals in primary care in Ontario, Canada: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is essential for health care systems to promote health, prevent disease, and manage chronic conditions. However, a shortage of primary care physicians challenges the delivery of high-quality primary care services to the population, especially for those living with multimorbidity. To address this challenge, interprofessional primary teams consisting of primary care physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals (AHPs) have been rolled out in many jurisdictions. This approach allows physicians to focus on complex patient care, where less complex care can be delegate

Minimum acceptable diet and its associated factors among children aged 6-23months in rural households of South Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Optimal nutrition throughout the first 1,000 days is critical for a child's development, but malnutrition remains a major issue in Ethiopia. The Minimum Acceptable Diet (MAD) is an important indication of nutritional quality in children aged 6-23 months, although its prevalence and determinants vary significantly across the country. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of MAD and its related characteristics in Southern Ethiopia's rural Gamo Zone, to guide targeted local interventions. METHODS: From July to September 2023, a community-based, cross-sectional stu

GLP-1 receptor agonist use and cancer risk in obese nondiabetic adults.

BACKGROUND: Recent data show that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) use is associated with decreased cancer incidence in diabetic and obese patients. However, there have been no studies exclusively investigating the association of obesity-associated cancer (OAC) risks and GLP-1RAs in obese, nondiabetic patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a target trial emulation to evaluate the association between GLP-1RA use and risk of 13 OACs. Using TriNetX, a nationwide database of 113 million US patients, we identified obese, nondiabetic adults without prior OAC diagnosis from D

Dietary Inflammatory Index and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Australian Adults: A Secondary Analysis of the OLIVAUS Trial.

Background: The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) is a commonly used tool to assess diet-related inflammation. Higher DII scores have been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies. However, evidence examining cardiovascular outcomes across DII levels in controlled settings remains limited. This secondary analysis examined cross-sectional differences and longitudinal associations between dietary inflammatory potential and cardiovascular outcomes in healthy Australian adults. Methods: This study used data from a double-blind randomised crossover trial, in wh

U.S. and Swedish primary care physicians' views on promoting healthy lifestyles: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Primary care patients can benefit from counseling to address unhealthy lifestyle habits. Despite this, evaluations most often note that primary care facilities are not using the full potential of healthy lifestyle counseling methods. Studies comparing prevention efforts in different countries generally find substantial differences between countries. Quantitative studies carried out in a project targeting health professionals and patients in the U.S. and Sweden have demonstrated considerable differences between the two countries. In particular, U.S. health care professionals were fo
