Tri-use of alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine in daily life among young adults: A day-level comparison of substance use outcomes to dual-use and alcohol-only use occasions.

Alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine use are common among young adults with many "co-using" substances on the same day. Most co-use research has focused on alcohol and cannabis co-use, but many alcohol + cannabis use days involve nicotine. Nicotine is rarely considered, and such "tri-use" (same-day alcohol + cannabis + nicotine use) may increase one's risk for heavy use and harms. The current daily diary study compared substance use outcomes across tri-use, dual use, and alcohol-only use days. Participants were 99 young adult college students (Mage = 20.28, SD = 1.29) who reported weekly alcohol +

A short communication of pain outcomes following a pharmacist-delivered alcohol and opioid use reduction intervention.

BACKGROUND: Co-use of alcohol and opioid medications increases risk for sedation, respiratory depression, and overdose, yet remains common among patients prescribed opioids. The Alcohol Brief Intervention-Medication Therapy Management (ABI-MTM) intervention was developed for delivery by community pharmacists and demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary reductions in co-use. Given possible pain-related motives for co-use, this exploratory secondary analysis assessed whether ABI-MTM affected pain symptomatology. METHODS: This study utilized data from a randomized trial of 44 com

Understanding higher substance use among early adolescent females: A decomposition analysis of adverse childhood experiences, bullying victimization, and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Historically, U.S. adolescent boys have reported higher substance use than girls, but this has changed in recent years with girls reporting more use. The reasons for this demographic shift are unclear, but girls may be more likely to turn to substance use as a way to cope with stress and internalizing problems. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the 2023 Nevada Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) (grades 6-8;n = 6734). We estimated the adjusted prevalence ratios of girls versus boys past 30-day substance use (electronic vapor products (EVP), alcohol, marijuana,

Health consequences of paternal incarceration using a future-treated control group.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is a now a common experience in the life course for young people in the United States that likely shapes health. This study examines the effect of paternal incarceration on adolescents’ health care access/utilization and health behaviors during adolescence. This study employs an innovative approach, which we refer to as the future treated control method, to adjust for unobserved heterogeneity by exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in the timing of paternal incarceration to develop a future treated control group. In this approach youth who have experience

Mapping eligibility criteria in oncology target trial emulations using real-world data: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Target trial emulations often face challenges in accurately identifying the intended target population within real-world data (RWD) because eligibility criteria cannot always be directly mapped to available variables. This scoping review aimed to systematically characterize the proportion of eligibility criteria from oncology target trials that are successfully mapped to their emulated counterparts and to describe the approaches used for this mapping. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE for peer-reviewed studies published between January 1, 2016, and April 23, 2025, that were designed to

A Systematic Review of International Guidelines for Addressing Alcohol Use Disorder in Pregnancy.

Despite well-documented harms of prenatal alcohol exposure, evidence-based treatment guidelines for alcohol use disorder (AUD) during pregnancy remain limited. We systematically reviewed international clinical practice guidelines to examine how they address the full cascade of AUD care during pregnancy, including diagnosis, engagement, treatment initiation, and retention. We searched over 40 clinical practice guideline databases (including PubMed and Guidelines International Network) and gray literature sources globally, identifying 1045 records. Are co-occurring behavioural health risk factors related to reach and efficacy of in-person versus computer-generated brief alcohol interventions? Findings from a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: The common co-occurrence of behavioural health risk factors (HRFs; e.g. at-risk alcohol use, tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, overweight) greatly impacts the global burden of disease. Little is known about how well patients with multiple co-occurring HRFs are reached by and benefit from recommended behavioural interventions. We investigated whether the number of co-occurring HRFs among at-risk alcohol using hospital patients was associated with reach for brief alcohol intervention and whether it moderated the (comparative) efficacy of in-person intervention delivery versus com

Human-Centered Design of a Contextualized Service Delivery Model for Families of Infants With Major Congenital Anomalies in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies (CAs) are a major cause of childhood mortality and disability in low- and middle-income countries. Our study explored caregiver experiences of infants with major CAs in Kenya and co-developed interventions using human-centered design (HCD). METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study at Kenya's second largest referral hospital (August 2023 to January 2024). Thirty-one caregivers of 23 infants with major CAs completed interviews on experiences and care needs, analyzed thematically using the socio-ecological model (individual, family, healthcare, and community dom

A budding problem: Marijuana use in pediatric trauma patients before and after legalization.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana legalization may influence adolescent substance use patterns and injury mechanisms, but pediatric data remain limited. Michigan's 2018 legalization of recreational marijuana created a natural setting to evaluate these trends. This study examined changes in marijuana detection and associated clinical outcomes among adolescent trauma patients before and after legalization. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients aged 12 to 18 years treated at a Level I pediatric trauma center from 2015 to 2024. Demographics, injury characteristics, toxicology results

Dyadic interactions and injecting practices: Unpacking the role of interpersonal dynamics in drug injection partnerships.

BACKGROUND: High-risk injecting behaviors often occur in the context of injecting partnerships, yet how interpersonal (dyadic) dynamics shape individual injecting practices remains poorly characterized. METHODS: Baseline cross-sectional data from 131 injecting partnerships (262 dyad-member observations) in San Francisco and Montreal were analyzed. Injecting-related interpersonal factors (trust, power imbalance, risk perception, intimacy, and cooperation) were measured using the validated 54-item Interpersonal Dynamics in Injecting Partnerships (IDIP) scale. Association of under-reporting of alcohol use with HIV viral non-suppression and an all-cause mortality risk score among people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol use contributes to poor HIV-related outcomes. Alcohol under-reporting may be associated with HIV viral non-suppression and all-cause mortality risk, especially at the high end of the spectrum. We evaluated whether alcohol under-reporting was associated with these outcomes among PWH with unhealthy alcohol use who were receiving ART. METHODS: We pooled data from six studies of PWH in Uganda (ADEPT-T, DIPT, Extend), United States (MWCCS), and Russia (Russia ARCH 1, St Peter). We included PWH on ART who engaged in unhealthy drinking as determined by the alcohol bioma
