INTRODUCTION: Healthcare providers are required to support people living with HIV (PLHIV) to quit tobacco use for improved health outcomes, but it is unclear to what extent they adhere to these requirements. We examined HIV care providers and PLHIV's perceptions of support, and barriers, to providing tobacco cessation.
METHODS: This qualitative investigation was part of a larger study seeking to integrate tobacco cessation into HIV care in Western Kenya (NCT05351606). We conducted 22 key informant interviews with HIV care providers and managers and four focus group discussions (n=28) with PLH

INTRODUCTION: Unhealthy alcohol use (UAU) is associated with preventable morbidity and mortality and accounted for more than 140,000 deaths per year in the US during 2015 to 2019. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends routine screening for UAU in adults aged 18 years and older and pregnant persons, followed by brief counseling for a positive screening (B recommendation). Primary care clinicians can improve UAU outcomes by universally screening and offering brief counseling. This study aimed to increase screening, brief intervention, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), or

IMPORTANCE: Cause of ischemic stroke in young people is highly variable; however, the risk of recurrence is often presented with all subtypes of stroke grouped together in classification systems such as the Trial of ORG (danaparoid sodium [Orgaran]) 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) criteria, which limits the ability to individually inform young patients with stroke about their risk of recurrence.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the short-term and long-term risk of recurrent vascular events after ischemic stroke at a young age by stroke cause and to identify factors associated with recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) face an elevated risk of developing mental health disorders and alcohol use disorders (AUD), which in turn increase their vulnerability to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other negative outcomes. To effectively address both of these health issues, it is crucial to understand the shared key determinants underlying these illnesses, which is a substantial knowledge gap in Ethiopia and elsewhere in the world. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the common key determinants of depression and AUD among FSWs in Ethiopia using a bivaria

BACKGROUND: The prevailing exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) among youth is associated with adolescents' mental health. However, few studies have examined whether receiving help from mental health services affects mental health outcomes among adolescents with ACEs. Therefore, this study examines the moderated effects of mental health services use on the relationship between exposures to ACEs and mental health outcomes among US adolescents.
METHODS: The sample was restricted to adolescents aged 11-17 using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2019, 2021, an

INTRODUCTION: Rate of alcohol consumption, the speed with which people drink, has been linked to a range of outcomes, including alcohol use disorder symptoms and increased positive affect. However, minimal work has identified who is most likely to drink at elevated rates. Impulsivity is associated with increased attention to positive reinforcers specifically (e.g., positive affect). We therefore examined whether people higher in trait impulsivity engage in faster consumption during drinking episodes.
METHODS: Participants were current drinkers (N = 113; 54 people with borderline personality d

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD); however, buprenorphine initiation can be complicated by withdrawal symptoms including precipitated withdrawal. There has been increasing interest in using low dose initiation (LDI) strategies to reduce this withdrawal risk. As there are limited data on withdrawal symptoms during LDI, we characterize withdrawal symptoms in people with daily fentanyl use who underwent initiation using these strategies as outpatients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with OUD using daily fentanyl who

BACKGROUND: During the ongoing opioid epidemic, some Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) are unable to admit program applicants in a timely fashion. Interim methadone (IM) treatment (without routine counseling) is an effective approach to overcome this challenge when counseling capacity is inadequate to permit admissions within 14 days of request. It requires both federal and state approval and has been rarely utilized since its incorporation into the federal OTP regulations in 1993.
METHODS: We evaluated the impact of Implementation Facilitation (IF) on OTPs providing timely admission to methad

BACKGROUND: Drug tourism reflects the expanding illicit drug market, posing health risks in unfamiliar travel settings. Existing knowledge specifically addressing substance use among international travellers is sparse and has not been reviewed to date. This review aimed to describe the recreational substance abuse in international travellers.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus using keywords related to recreational substances and international travellers. A total of 11 021 articles were reviewed, charted and summarized for the evidence on prevalenc

INTRODUCTION: Perioperative urinary tract infections (PUTIs) are common in the United States and are a significant contributor to high healthcare costs. There is a lack of large studies on the risk factors for PUTIs after total hysterectomy (TH).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using a national inpatient sample (NIS) of 445,380 patients from 2010 to 2019 to analyze the risk factors and annual incidence of PUTIs associated with TH perioperatively.
RESULTS: PUTIs were found in 9087 patients overall, showing a 2.0% incidence. There were substantial differences in the incidence of PU

BACKGROUND: Overwhelming evidence highlights the negative impact of substance use on HIV care and treatment outcomes. Yet, the extent to which alcohol use disorder (AUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD) services have been integrated within HIV clinical settings is limited. We describe AUD/SUD screening and treatment availability in HIV clinical sites participating in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) consortium.
METHODS: In 2020, 223 IeDEA HIV clinical sites from 41 countries across seven geographic regions completed a survey on capacity and practices re

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol use is a common public health problem in HIV care settings in Africa and it affects the HIV continuum of care. In Uganda and other low-income countries, HIV care providers are a key resource in caring for young people (15-24 years) living with HIV (YPLH) with unhealthy alcohol use. Caring for YPLH largely depends on care providers' perceptions of the problem. However, data that explores HIV care providers' perceptions about caring for YPLH with unhealthy drinking are lacking in Uganda. We sought to describe the perceptions of HIV care providers regarding caring fo

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the analgesic activity of Costus igneus and sought to identify candidate phytochemical constituents associated with the observed biological activity through combined computational and experimental evaluation. Chemical profiling identified 160 putative constituents from the 70% methanolic leaf extract, from which eighteen compounds were prioritized following pharmacokinetic and toxicity screening. Comparative molecular interaction analysis highlighted two compounds, 5,8-dimethyl-1,4,6,7-tetrahydronaphthalene-1 (CI11) and R-limonene (CI14), for further character

IMPORTANCE: Bariatric surgery procedures, in particular Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), have been associated with subsequent alcohol-related complications. However, previous studies lack data to account for changes in body mass index (BMI) or alcohol use over time, which are key potential confounders.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between RYGB, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric banding on subsequent alcohol use disorder (AUD)-related hospitalization and all-cause mortality as compared with referral to a weight management program alone.

Objective: The impact of cannabis use disorder (CUD) on education functioning and GPA was examined within the context of co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants: Undergraduates (N = 210) who reported using cannabis within the past six months were recruited. Methods: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to determine whether CUD symptom severity and presence of probable CUD diagnosis predicted educational impairment and current GPA, over and above other mental health conditions. Results: CUD
