Appropriate Clinical Response Following Opioid Overdose: A Retrospective Analysis Within the Veterans Health Administration System.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose (OD) remains a pressing public health crisis in the United States, with substantial gaps in postoverdose care, particularly among veterans. Understanding the demographic and clinical factors associated with appropriate postoverdose care is essential to addressing these gaps. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 1032 veterans who experienced a nonfatal opioid overdose and received care through the veterans Health Administration system was conducted. Data were extracted from electronic health records, including demographic, pharmacy, and clinical variables. The p

Disability and Opioid Pain Reliever Use in Reproductive-Aged Women: An Analysis of a Canadian Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Prescription opioid analgesic use among reproductive-aged women is prevalent in North America. Women with disabilities experience high rates of pain and structural barriers to accessing resources, potentially increasing their likelihood of opioid use and harm. Yet, few studies have examined opioid analgesic use in this population. This study compared the use of opioid pain relievers and nonmedical opioid use in reproductive-aged women with and without disabilities across Canada. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey for 11,062 women aged 15-49 ye

Health consequences of paternal incarceration using a future-treated control group.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is a now a common experience in the life course for young people in the United States that likely shapes health. This study examines the effect of paternal incarceration on adolescents’ health care access/utilization and health behaviors during adolescence. This study employs an innovative approach, which we refer to as the future treated control method, to adjust for unobserved heterogeneity by exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in the timing of paternal incarceration to develop a future treated control group. In this approach youth who have experience

Synthetic opioid response in a low-income country: policy and implementation lessons from Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Potent synthetic opioids are entering low-income settings where addiction-treatment, harm-reduction, overdose-surveillance, toxicology, and regulatory systems remain limited. In April 2024, Sierra Leone declared a national emergency after the rapid spread of Kush, later confirmed to contain nitazene-class opioids in 87% of tested samples. OBJECTIVE: To examine implementation determinants shaping Sierra Leone's national Kush response and draw policy lessons for low-resource settings confronting synthetic opioid markets. METHODS: We conducted a theory-driven document analysis using

Mapping eligibility criteria in oncology target trial emulations using real-world data: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Target trial emulations often face challenges in accurately identifying the intended target population within real-world data (RWD) because eligibility criteria cannot always be directly mapped to available variables. This scoping review aimed to systematically characterize the proportion of eligibility criteria from oncology target trials that are successfully mapped to their emulated counterparts and to describe the approaches used for this mapping. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE for peer-reviewed studies published between January 1, 2016, and April 23, 2025, that were designed to

A Systematic Review of International Guidelines for Addressing Alcohol Use Disorder in Pregnancy.

Despite well-documented harms of prenatal alcohol exposure, evidence-based treatment guidelines for alcohol use disorder (AUD) during pregnancy remain limited. We systematically reviewed international clinical practice guidelines to examine how they address the full cascade of AUD care during pregnancy, including diagnosis, engagement, treatment initiation, and retention. We searched over 40 clinical practice guideline databases (including PubMed and Guidelines International Network) and gray literature sources globally, identifying 1045 records. Evidence-Based Treatment Interventions for Substance Use Disorders or Misuse Among Older Adults in the United States: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Substance use disorders (SUD) are rising among U.S. older adults, yet few studies have synthesized evidence on effective treatments for this population. This scoping review mapped and evaluated U.S.-based empirical literature on evidence-based treatments or evidence-based practices (EBPs) for older adults (age ≥ 60) with SUD. EBPs identified were Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Medications for SUD, particularly medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). METHODS: Following PRI

Culturally mediated recovery: A cross-perspective qualitative study of psychosocial treatment for drug dependence in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial treatment is central to recovery from drug dependence, yet most evidence comes from Western contexts emphasizing autonomy, family involvement, spirituality, and peer support. In South Korea, recovery unfolds within distinct legal and relational structures, suggesting a culturally mediated treatment process. This study examined how Korean therapists and patients experience psychosocial treatment for drug dependence. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 participants (13 therapists, 9 patients) from addiction hospitals and recovery facilities. Data

Genital atrophy in transmasculine individuals using testosterone: symptom experiences, treatment preferences, and barriers to care.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone gender-affirming hormone therapy frequently results in genital atrophy among transmasculine individuals. Low-dose topical genital estrogen is currently recommended for transmasculine individuals experiencing dyspareunia and vaginitis, but its effectiveness has not been assessed among those using testosterone. The objective of this study was to describe the lived experience of genital atrophy and the acceptability of available treatments in this population. METHODS: We conducted in-depth one-on-one interviews with 28 transmasculine adults using testosterone, recruited

Are co-occurring behavioural health risk factors related to reach and efficacy of in-person versus computer-generated brief alcohol interventions? Findings from a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: The common co-occurrence of behavioural health risk factors (HRFs; e.g. at-risk alcohol use, tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, overweight) greatly impacts the global burden of disease. Little is known about how well patients with multiple co-occurring HRFs are reached by and benefit from recommended behavioural interventions. We investigated whether the number of co-occurring HRFs among at-risk alcohol using hospital patients was associated with reach for brief alcohol intervention and whether it moderated the (comparative) efficacy of in-person intervention delivery versus com

The impact of marijuana use on postoperative outcomes in reduction mammaplasty: Risks, complications, and considerations.

BACKGROUND: The legalization and social acceptance of marijuana in the United States has led to a significant increase in its use. However, there is a paucity of data surrounding the effect of marijuana on surgical outcomes, posing challenges for risk stratification and perioperative management in plastic surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between marijuana consumption and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing reduction mammaplasty (RM). METHODS: A multicenter retrospective analysis was conducted to compare the outcomes in patients who underwent RM between 2019 and

Receipt of reproductive safety data among pregnant marijuana users and nonusers.

PURPOSE: Pregnant patients were surveyed to determine marijuana use, their interest in additional education of the risks marijuana use in pregnancy, and if they had been educated by their providers about these. METHODS: Fisher's exact tests were used to determine significant differences in both demographics and survey answers on provider education between those who used and did not use marijuana during pregnancy. RESULTS: 409 patients were surveyed with 367 completing the survey. 87 participants (23.7%) of those surveyed endorsed marijuana use in their current pregnancy. Significant differen
