Patient factors outweigh procedure extent in infection risk after cervical disc arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: To determine the 90-day incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) after cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA), compare single versus multilevel procedures, and identify independent predictors of SSI. METHODS: We identified adult patients undergoing single- or multilevel cervical disc arthroplasty for elective/degenerative indications. Patients with malignancy, spinal infection, metastatic disease, or acute trauma were excluded, and continuous claims data for 1 year preoperatively and 90 days postoperatively were required. Demographics, comorbidities, and procedural extent were compared b

Opioid Use During Pregnancy Among Individuals With Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate (1) prevalence and time trends in opioid use during pregnancy and (2) patterns of opioid use before and during pregnancy among individuals with and without disabilities. METHODS: This population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada, included all pregnancies to individuals with physical only (n=133,371), sensory only (n=49,306), intellectual/developmental-only (n=2,876), and multiple (n=11,195) disabilities and those without any disability (n=1,271,919) in 2013-2021. Overall and annual prevalence of opioid use during pregnancy was estimat

SGLT-2 inhibitor add-on to DPP-4 inhibitor therapy significantly reduces HbA1c and body weight without increasing hypoglycaemia risk in type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled on metformin: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Esophageal cancer remains a significant global health challenge with increasing rates of incidence and mortality, particularly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), with higher prevalence in Asia. This study aims to investigate the cytotoxicity and potential cell death mechanisms (i.e., apoptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, and pyroptosis) induced by three newly synthesized benzamidine derivatives (NBDs) against the ESCC KYSE-150 cell line. MTT cell viability assay was used to assess the cytotoxic effect of the NBDs on the ESCC cell line, KYSE-150, and the normal esophageal epi

Characterizing complex opioid use disorder care trajectories and outcomes following acute service utilization: A protocol for a population-based data linkage study.

Despite robust evidence that medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce overdose and mortality, substantial care gaps remain following opioid-related hospital encounters. The opioid use disorder (OUD) Cascade of Care framework conceptualizes progression from identification to treatment initiation and retention, yet limited research has examined how real-world OUD treatment trajectories unfold, particularly across treatment episodes and multiple care settings. This paper describes an NIH-funded study protocol (1R01DA061367-01A1) to conduct a longitudinal observational study using linked

Barriers to addiction-related care during pregnancy in Nigeria: a scoping review and health system policy analysis.

Substance-related exposures in pregnancy are documented across Nigeria, but their integration into antenatal care remains unclear. This scoping review and health-system policy analysis mapped empirical evidence on these exposures among pregnant women and examined barriers to perinatal addiction-related care. Addiction-related care is understood here as screening, risk assessment, counselling, documentation, referral, and treatment. Five databases were searched on 6 April 2026; 23 empirical studies were synthesised with national policy documents and clinical guidelines using the WHO health-syst

Acute Coronary Syndrome and Recreational Drug Use: A Comprehensive Review.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although traditional cardiovascular risk factors remain central to ACS development, recreational drug use is increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant trigger, particularly in younger patients with fewer conventional risk factors. This narrative review synthesized evidence identified through searches of PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus up to June 2026, including clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, observational studies, mechanistic investigations, and clinically informative case-base

How do services offered within opioid treatment programs vary based on state methadone policies?

INTRODUCTION: State regulations governing opioid treatment programs (OTPs) vary widely in their restrictiveness, yet how state policies relate to the availability of services offered within OTPs remains understudied. In this study, we compare the availability of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) options, psychosocial services, and housing supports across OTPs operating in states with different levels of OTP policy restrictions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1501 opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in the United States. Exposures included 11 state-level OTP policies tha

Impact of Comorbid Psychological Distress on Stimulant Use Disorder Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is common among individuals with stimulant use disorder (StUD) and may affect treatment outcomes, with potential differences in men and women. We examined the impact of comorbid psychological distress on StUD treatment outcomes across behavioral interventions, with a focus on differences by sex. METHODS: Data were pooled from 4 randomized controlled trials of behavioral interventions (eg, motivational interviewing, 12-step, and smoking-cessation) for StUD (n = 1858) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse Data Share. Psychological distress was assessed usi

Prevalence, types, and demographic characteristics associated with major life changes following psychedelic use.

Psychedelic use has been linked to major life changes that may impact health outcomes, yet few studies have systematically examined the prevalence, types, and demographic characteristics that may be associated with such changes. This paper draws subsamples of respondents who endorsed lifetime psychedelic use from two samples of US adults - one nationally representative by age, race/ethnicity, and sex (Study 1; n = 613) and one larger, more sociodemographically diverse but non-representative (Study 2; n = 3,168). Study 1 was used to estimate the prevalence of reported major life changes followi

Impact of non-tobacco nicotine dependence on outcomes following carpal tunnel release: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-tobacco nicotine dependence (NTND) from products like e-cigarettes and pouches is rapidly rising. Studies have shown that tobacco can negatively impact outcomes following carpal tunnel release (CTR), but literature focusing specifically on NTND is sparse. As such, the purpose of this study was to compare outcomes following CTR between patients with versus without a history of NTND. METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried to identify patients over 18 years old who underwent primary CTR. Patients were stratified based on their history of NTND. Cohorts underwent propensity sc

Perinatal outcomes in individuals with co-occurring anxiety and/or depression and substance use in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of substance use and mental health disorders is rising in pregnancy, however there is a paucity of evidence of how co-occurring diagnoses affect maternal and neonatal wellbeing. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between co-occurring anxiety and/or depression and substance use in pregnancy and adverse perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study analyzing linked vital statistics and hospital discharge data from all births in California between 2008 and 2020. Individuals with anxiety/depression and co-occurring substance use disorders we

Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0: 15-year follow-up study of eating disorders and weight-related trajectories, mental health and substance use health from early adolescence to early adulthood-a Canadian cohort profile.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined how psychosocial risk and protective factors in adolescence shape mental health outcomes and other multimorbid conditions in adulthood, particularly among Canadian youth. The Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0 study was a 15-year follow-up cohort study designed to investigate how early etiological factors, including body image and disordered eating symptoms in adolescence, contribute to the development of eating, weight-related concerns, mental health and substance use health problems in early adulthood. In this paper, we describe the REAL

Adolescent cyberbullying and polysubstance use: unpacking sex differences.

The rise of social media platforms has heightened cyberbullying among adolescents, closely tied to negative mental health outcomes. Substance use, including alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco, also remains a significant concern for this population. This study examines the relationship between cyberbullying and substance use, exploring potential sex differences in these associations. We analyzed data from the 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES) (n = 6,740 students in grades 9-12). We used multinomial logistic regression models to assess the relationship between past-year cyberbu

"Cigarettes led me back to smoking tik": lived experience perspectives on tobacco use during substance use treatment and recovery in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the high prevalence of tobacco use among people with substance use disorder (SUD), tobacco cessation is not a routine part of SUD treatment in South Africa. No studies have explored how people receiving SUD treatment view the effects of tobacco use on SUD treatment or their barriers to tobacco cessation. Clinicians need this information to develop locally relevant, person-centred tobacco cessation interventions. To address this gap, this study aimed to explore perceptions of tobacco use and its impact on SUD recovery among people receiving SUD treatment in South Africa.

Help-Seeking and Substance Use Among Police Staff After the 2018 Strasbourg Christmas Market Attack.

BACKGROUND: The use of mental health services by police staff is usually low. After the 2018 attack on the Strasbourg Christmas market, police officers exposed to psychotraumatic risks were found to have a higher PTSD risk. This study aims to describe the help-seeking and substance use by police staff after the attack. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to 1697 police officers 3 months after the attack. The 475 respondents were classified as exposed (took action to stop the terrorists, pursued them in the city, or helped a victim) or unexposed and indirect-exposed. Counselling, treatment, alco

Association of under-reporting of alcohol use with HIV viral non-suppression and an all-cause mortality risk score among people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol use contributes to poor HIV-related outcomes. Alcohol under-reporting may be associated with HIV viral non-suppression and all-cause mortality risk, especially at the high end of the spectrum. We evaluated whether alcohol under-reporting was associated with these outcomes among PWH with unhealthy alcohol use who were receiving ART. METHODS: We pooled data from six studies of PWH in Uganda (ADEPT-T, DIPT, Extend), United States (MWCCS), and Russia (Russia ARCH 1, St Peter). We included PWH on ART who engaged in unhealthy drinking as determined by the alcohol bioma
